Recent studies revealed a simultaneous increase in Arctic-boreal wildfires and permafrost thaw since 2000. Despite the agreement that wildfires accelerate permafrost thaw, it remains unclear whether permafrost thaw makes the landscapes more prone to wildfires. Our study developed a model-based approach to disentangle wildfires ignited naturally and anthropogenically. The historical simulation demonstrates an abrupt increase in the proportion of burned area by naturally-ignited wildfires that occurred around 2010 in the Arctic-boreal regions. The increase in burned area proportion results from

Background Wildfires produce air pollutants that have been associated with complications during pregnancy. This study examined the association between wildfire exposure before and during pregnancy and the odds of congenital heart defect (CHD) in the offspring. Methods This retrospective cohort study used the California Linked Birth File and the Forestry and Fire Protection data between 2007 and 2010. Patients living within 15 miles of wildfire during pregnancy were considered exposed. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to estimate the association between wildfire exposure by t

BACKGROUND: Large-scale wildfires in California, USA, are increasing in both size and frequency, with substantial health consequences. The capacity for wildfire smoke to displace microbes and cause clinically significant fungal infections is poorly understood. We aimed to determine whether exposure to wildfire smoke was associated with an increased risk of hospital admissions for systemic fungal infections.
METHODS: In this population-based, retrospective study, we used hospital administrative data from 22 hospitals in California, USA, to analyse the association between wildfire smoke exposur

Frequency and intensity of wildfires are expected to increase due to climate change, especially in areas with a long summer drought. Forests are a major sink for the global pollutant mercury (Hg), and fluvial transport of Hg from recently burned watersheds has not been widely investigated. Here, we examined two years of fluvial transport of Hg and its speciation (total Hg, methyl-Hg, particulate, and dissolved forms) under storm events and baseflow in two recently burned watersheds with different burned proportions and one nonburned reference watershed in the Coastal Ranges of northern Califor

Increased wildfire events constitute a significant threat to life and property in the United States. Wildfire impact on severe storms and weather hazards is another pathway that threatens society, and our understanding of which is very limited. Here, we use unique modeling developments to explore the effects of wildfires in the western US (mainly California and Oregon) on precipitation and hail in the central US. We find that the western US wildfires notably increase the occurrences of heavy precipitation rates by 38% and significant severe hail (≥2 in.) by 34% in the central United States. Bo

Wildfire outbreaks can lead to extreme biomass burning (BB) emissions of both oxidized (e.g., nitrogen oxides; NOx = NO+NO2) and reduced form (e.g., ammonia; NH3) nitrogen (N) compounds. High N emissions are major concerns for air quality, atmospheric deposition, and consequential human and ecosystem health impacts. In this study, we use both satellite-based observations and modeling results to quantify the contribution of BB to the total emissions, and approximate the impact on total N deposition in the western U.S. Our results show that during the 2020 wildfire season of August-October, BB c

Background: The 2016 wildfires in Fort McMurray (Alberta, Canada) led to a massive displacement of 88,000 people and destroyed 2,400 homes. Although no direct human fatality resulted, many individuals feared for their lives or those of their loved ones. Objectives: (1) To estimate the prevalence of post-traumatic stress, major depressive, insomnia, generalized anxiety, and substance use disorders in the adult population of Fort McMurray 1 year after the evacuation; (2) To identify pre-, peri-, and post-disaster correlates of mental health disorders. Methods: A phone survey using random digit s

Recent increases in the prevalence and severity of wildfires in some regions have resulted in an increased frequency of veterinary burn patients. Few studies exist regarding diagnostics and management of burn wounds in veterinary patients and current knowledge is extrapolated from human literature and research models. Post-burn cardiac injury is a common finding and predictor of mortality in human patients and echocardiography is an important tool in monitoring response to therapy and predicting outcome. We describe the notable findings from cats naturally exposed to California wildfires in 20

The January 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles County (LAC) caused widespread destruction and disproportionately affected linguistically diverse communities. Chinese immigrants, one of the largest immigrant groups in LAC, may have experienced heightened vulnerability due to limited English proficiency. To examine Chinese immigrants' experiences with emergency alerts and recovery during the 2025 wildfire, we conducted two focus groups in January 2026 with 16 Chinese participants who had been directly impacted by the wildfire. Discussions explored their trusted communication channels, fire alerts, ev

Psychological distress is common in the aftermath of a disaster. This study investigated psychological distress and morbidity in individuals who had experienced severe exposure to a wildfire disaster in a part of Greece. The study was a cross sectional case control of an adult population (18-65 years old). Face to face interviews were used in the collection of the data which were demographics, the type and number of losses and the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised for assessment of psychological symptoms. The results showed that those exposed to wildfires disaster scored significantly higher on the

Exposure to the particulate matter (PM2.5) component of wildfire smoke is associated with cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity and mortality. To minimize exposure to high concentrations of PM2.5, public health officials recommend a multipronged mitigation approach through closing all doors and windows and running a portable air cleaner (PAC) indoors to filter particulate from indoor air. Through experimental studies, mitigation efficacy of both remaining indoors and utilizing an air cleaner have been generally validated, but efficacy is inconsistent, depending on building structure and occ

INTRODUCTION: Wildfire smoke is an increasing source of pollution in the United States and can affect communities far from active fires. The developing fetus is vulnerable to prenatal smoke exposure, yet existing evidence is focused on a few western states. This population-based retrospective cohort study documents national patterns and trends in prenatal wildfire smoke exposure across geographic and sociodemographic groups.
METHODS: Satellite-based wildfire smoke plumes were combined with restricted-use vital statistics microdata for 34,440,915 live births in the contiguous United States fro

Wildfires severely affect ecosystems and populations. Reconstructing documented fires helps emergency services study hazards and train responders. Many current tools are difficult to integrate and lack real-time performance across scenarios. This paper presents a GPU-accelerated Unity system for replaying and rendering documented wildfire events with temporal precision. The proposed method is a visualization pipeline for historical fire records-not a fire propagation model-using recorded rather than computed ignition and extinction times. It integrates geospatial processing, particle rendering

IMPORTANCE: There is limited research examining the association between wildfire smoke, an increasingly frequent exposure, and headache-related emergency department (ED) visits, despite headaches being a leading cause of years lived with disability globally.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between wildfire-sourced fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) and ED visit for migraine and other primary headache syndromes (MOPHS) compared with nonwildfire-sourced PM2.5, and to assess the variation across sociodemographic factors.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition exacerbated by exposure to particulate air pollution. Smoke from landscape fires has been associated with increased mortality, asthma-related admissions to emergency and other hospital departments, and uptake in primary care services. With climate change and more frequent landscape fires, healthcare systems must prepare for disaster, including surges in asthma medication demand. Past reviews have not resolved the direction and magnitude of the association between PM2.5 exposure during landscape fires and asthma medication use. The aim of this review wa

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether short-term exposure to wildfire smoke is associated with emergency department visits for headache in children and adolescents.
BACKGROUND: Wildfires are becoming increasingly common and are associated with numerous adverse health outcomes. However, we currently do not know how wildfire smoke exposure affects children and adolescents with primary headache disorders. Headache disorders in youth are a major contributor to frequently missed school days and youth with headache disorders have high medical care utilization and total healt

UNLABELLED: Background. Global climate change is resulting in dramatic increases in wildfires. Individuals exposed to wildfires experience a high burden of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the cost-effectiveness of the treatment options to address PTSD from wildfires has not been studied. The objective of this study was to conduct a cost-utility analysis comparing screening followed by treatment with paroxetine or trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) versus no screening in Canadian adult wildfire evacuees. Methods. Using a Markov model, quality-adjusted life-years (QAL

BACKGROUND: Wildfires are increasingly common with wildfire smoke affecting millions globally, yet its impact on immune responses is poorly understood. Natural Killer (NK) cells play a role in mediating air pollutant effects and regulating vaccine immunity.
OBJECTIVE: This real-world study, conducted on participants in the Pfizer BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccine trial, studied the effects of wildfire smoke exposure on long-term vaccine effects.
METHODS: We collected blood samples from 52 healthy, non-smoking participants (ages 26-83) before and 1 month after placebo or vaccine injections during hea
