Electrophysiological correlates of semantic processing in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS), a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder due to microdeletion in chromosome 7, has been described as a syndrome with an intriguing socio-cognitive phenotype. Cognitively, the relative preservation of language and face processing abilities coexists with severe deficits in visual-spatial tasks, as well as in tasks involving abstract reasoning. However, in spite of early claims of the independence of language from general cognition in WS, a detailed investigation of language subcomponents has demonstrated several abnormalities in lexical-semantic processing. Nonetheless, the

Mental health problems in adults with Williams syndrome.

Although many researchers have investigated emotional and behavioral difficulties in individuals with Williams syndrome, few have used standardized diagnostic assessments. We examined mental health problems in 92 adults with Williams syndrome using the Psychiatric Assessment Schedule for Adults with Developmental Disabilities-PAS-ADD (Moss, Goldberg, et al., 1996). Factors potentially associated with mental health problems were also explored. The PAS-ADD identified mental health problems in 24% of the sample. The most common were anxiety (16.5%) and specific phobias (12%). Other diagnoses incl

Retinotopically defined primary visual cortex in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome, caused by a hemizygous microdeletion on chromosome 7q11.23, is characterized by severe impairment in visuospatial construction. To examine potential contributions of early visual processing to this cognitive problem, we functionally mapped the size and neuroanatomical variability of primary visual cortex (V1) in high-functioning adults with Williams syndrome and age- and IQ-matched control participants from the general population by using fMRI-based retinotopic mapping and cortical surface models generated from high-resolution structural MRI. Visual stimulation, consisting o

Behavioural indexes of callosal functioning in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurogenetic disorder that stems from a microdeletion on chromosome 7. Recent anatomical studies have found evidence for corpus callosum abnormalities in WS. However, to date, the impact of these structural differences on callosal functionality remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate interhemispheric communication and hemispheric asymmetry in individuals with WS relative to mental age-matched controls. This was assessed using bilateral and unilateral presentations of visual stimuli in a picture-naming task. Results found both groups to exhib

Language abilities in Williams syndrome: a critical review.

Williams syndrome is a rare genetic disorder in which, it is claimed, language abilities are relatively strong despite mild to moderate mental retardation. Such claims have, in turn, been interpreted as evidence either for modular preservation of language or for atypical constraints on cognitive development. However, this review demonstrates that there is, in fact, little evidence that syntax, morphology, phonology, or pragmatics are any better than predicted by nonverbal ability, although performance on receptive vocabulary tests is relatively good. Similarly, claims of an imbalance between g

Williams syndrome associated with complete atrioventricular septal defect.

Williams syndrome is a genetic disorder associated with characteristic facies, supravalvar aortic stenosis, peripheral pulmonary stenosis, mental retardation, hypertension, premature aging of skin, and congenital cardiac defects. Many cardiac defects such as bicuspid aortic valve, mitral valve regurgitation, coarctation of the aorta, and ventricular or atrial septal defects are linked to the syndrome. Complete atrioventricular septal defect has rarely been associated with Williams syndrome and only one necropsy case has been reported in the literature. The long term follow up of Williams syndr

Cardiovascular manifestations in 75 patients with Williams syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence and types of various cardiovascular diseases in different age groups as well as the outcomes of cardiac surgery and other interventions were assessed in a population of 75 Williams syndrome (WS) patients aged 4 months to 76 years (median 22.7 years). STUDY DESIGN: The diagnosis of WS was in each case confirmed by the clinical phenotype and by a FISH test showing elastin hemizygosity. Clinical and operative data were collected from all hospitals where the patients had been treated. RESULTS: Cardiovascular symptoms were evident in 35 of 75 (47%) WS children at birth.

Hyperacusis in Williams syndrome: a sample survey study.

Williams syndrome is a true multiple congenital anomalies mental retardation syndrome affecting the vascular, connective tissue and the central nervous system. Affected individuals have a distinctive neuropsychological profile characterized by extremely poor visuospatial skills but relatively preserved verbal skills. A very striking characteristic is the hyperacusis or over-sensitivity to particular sounds. Klein et al. (4) found high rates (95%) of auditory over-sensitivity in a sample of Williams patients. The cause and mechanisms of auditory-over-sensitivity in Williams syndrome remain uncl

Linguistic abilities in Italian children with Williams syndrome.

Recent studies on subjects with Williams syndrome (WS) have revealed a particular facility for language, rarely observed in other mental retarded populations, inspiring much belief in the independence of language from cognition. Lexical and morphosyntactic abilities of 17 Italian WS individuals, between 4.10 and 15.3 years of age, were evaluated both in comprehension and production and compared with those of normally developing Italian children. WS subjects look similar to normal controls in lexical comprehension, but they appear to perform more poorly in grammatical comprehension. Furthermore

Spectrum of cardiovascular anomalies in Williams-Beuren syndrome.

This study is presented to identify and characterize the spectrum of the cardiovascular anomalies in children presenting with Williams-Beuren syndrome and cardiovascular anomalies at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto from 1966 to 1988. Forty-nine children were diagnosed and followed. The female to male ratio was 1.2:1. The age ranged from 1 month to 14 years at the time of diagnosis (mean 39 months), and follow-up periods were from 9 months to 20 years (mean 10 years). All patients having the typical features were also evaluated by geneticists. Based on cardiovascular findings four group

Repetitive Thoughts and Repetitive Behaviors in Williams Syndrome.

The purpose of the study was to characterize repetitive phenomena in Williams syndrome (WS). The parents of 60 subjects with WS completed the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) or Children's Y-BOCS, the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale, the Stereotyped Behavior Scale, and the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale-Parent Version. Nineteen males and 41 females participated in the study. Six subjects (10%) had obsessions only, six (10%) had compulsions only, and eleven (18%) had at least one obsession and at least one compulsion. None of the subjects had tics. Fifty subjects (83.3%) endorsed

Multimodal Retinal Imaging Findings in Williams-Beuren Syndrome.

A 17-year-old male patient diagnosed with Williams-Beuren syndrome presented with a gradual decline in vision in both eyes during a 3-year period. The ophthalmologic examination was notable for numerous loop-shaped tortuous vessels accompanying normal appearing retinal vessels and cystoid macular edema (CME). Mild foveal hypoplasia with a persistence of inner retinal layers was noted on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). OCT angiography showed that the abnormal vessels were not retinal vessels but were compatible with prepapillary vascular loops. The CME persisted despite repe

[Special dental management in patients with Williams syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: The Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disease. The disorder is characterized by symptoms, such as facial dysmorphism, defects within the masticatory organ and cardiovascular system as well as intellectual and physical disability. Moreover, the disorder may also affect vision or hearing, gastrointestinal and urogenital system and skin. Limited cooperation with children suffering from WS is related not only from their young age and fear of dental treatment but also with hypersensitivity to sounds, which is one of the symptoms of this disease. Therefore, there is a need to ca

Celiac disease in patients with Williams-Beuren syndrome.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune, gastrointestinal disorder characterized by intolerance to the dietary grain protein gluten. An increased prevalence of celiac disease has been reported in Down syndrome and Turner syndrome, but there has been only few previous reports with respect to the association of celiac disease in Williams-Beuren syndrome. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of celiac disease in our 24 Williams-Beuren syndrome patients. Gastrointestinal problems and celiac disease symptoms of patients were noted. All patients were analyzed by the titer of tissue transgluta

Asperger's disorder and Williams syndrome: a case report.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic disorder caused by the hemizygous microdeletion in chromosome 7q11.23. It is characterized by dysmorphic face, cardiovascular disease, idiopathic hypercalcemia, mental retardation, and an uneven profile of cognitive-linguistic abilities and deficits. The presence of autistic features in individuals with WS is a controversial issue. While there are reports that describe them as overly friendly with excessive sociability and good empathic skills, some recent studies focus more on the qualitative impairment of their social abilities. Here, we report the clinica
