Metacognition and Frontal Lobe Functioning.

OBJECTIVE: The frontal lobes have been reported to play in important role in metacognition. The present study evaluated metacognition in a group of neurological patients. METHOD: Twenty-one neurological (traumatic brain injury and cerebral vascular accident) patients were administered a metacognitive test and neuropsychological tests including a well-known index of frontal lobe functioning, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). After each trial, the participants were asked to evaluate their own performance on a face recognition test by rating their confidence about their accuracy on a scale

Neuropsychological frontal impairments and negative symptoms in schizophrenia.

Negative symptoms have been associated with frontal lobe dysfunction in schizophrenia. However, neuropsychological studies that evaluated the correlation between performance in tests sensitive to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and negative symptoms have shown inconsistent results. Growing evidence has appeared that not only the DLPFC but other prefrontal regions could be involved in schizophrenia. We evaluated schizophrenic patients and healthy controls using three "frontal tests": the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), the Iowa Gambling Task (GT) and a Theory of Mind test (Faux P

Frontal brain volume correlates of impaired executive function in schizophrenia.

Cognitive impairments affect functional capacity in individuals with schizophrenia (SZH), but their neural basis remains unclear. The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), and the Stroop Task (SCWT), are paradigmatic tests which have been used extensively for examining executive function in SZH. However, few studies have explored how deficits on these tasks link to brain volume differences commonly seen in SZH. Here, for the first time, we tested associations between FreeSurfer-derived frontal brain volumes and performance on both WCST and SCWT, in a well-matched sample of 57 SZH and 32 control

[Executive cognitive alteration of prefrontal type in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy].

This study examines the performance on executive function--classically considered as purported by the frontal lobes--in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Two groups of patients were evaluated: one consisted of 16 TLE patients and the other comprised 12 patients with primary generalised epilepsy (PGE). The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) was used as a measure of executive function. Results demonstrated that performance on the WCST was remarkably defective in the TLE group, showing a pattern suggestive of frontal like executive dysfunction in a 75% of the patients, against the 17% o

Executive functioning deficits in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are independent of oppositional defiant or reading disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate deficits of executive functions in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) classified by type (combined [CT] or predominantly inattentive [IT]) and comorbidity with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and reading disorder (RD). METHOD: The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and Tower of Hanoi (TOH) were administered to 28 community volunteers and 359 children (7.5-13.5 years old) divided into ADHD types, RD, and ODD. RESULTS: ADHD/CT children solved fewer puzzles and violated more rules on the TOH than ADHD/IT or non-ADHD subjects. On the WCST the

Effects of low alcohol consumption on visual evoked potential, visual field and visual contrast sensitivity.

PURPOSE: We studied changes in the vision of 16 people after consumption of a small quantity of alcohol, at a blood alcohol level (BAL) of 0.57 g/kg. METHODS: We studied visual contrast sensitivity (VCS) using Vistech VCTS 6500, visual evoked potential (VEP) by checked pattern stimulations and the peripheral visual field (PVF) with a perimetric automatic Humphrey. We first carried out the tests on sober people and then on individuals with a BAL of 0.57 g/kg. RESULTS: Alcohol consumption caused no significant difference in performance for these 3 tests. However, at a BAL of 0.57 g/kg there wa

The effect of learning on feedback-related potentials in adolescents with dyslexia: an EEG-ERP study.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with dyslexia exhibit associated learning deficits and impaired executive functions. The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) is a learning-based task that relies heavily on executive functioning, in particular, attention shift and working memory. Performance during early and late phases of a series within the task represents learning and implementation of a newly learned rule. Here, we aimed to examine two event-related potentials associated with learning, feedback-related negativity (FRN)-P300 complex, in individuals with dyslexia performing the WCST. METHODS: Adoles

Evaluation of Executive Functions With Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Euthymic Bipolar and Borderline Personality Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are often indistinguishable, given both the key features of impulsivity and emotional dysregulation. This indicates widespread comorbidity and potential misdiagnosis in both groups. Therefore, this study aimed to differentiate BD and BPD by using alterations of brain hemodynamics under the influence of executive tests. METHODS: Twenty patients with the euthymic phase of BD and 20 patients with BPD, and 20 healthy control subjects were included in this study. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) hemodynamic responses were eva

Paranoid schizophrenia: non-specificity of neuropsychological vulnerability markers.

During stages of remission, patients with paranoid schizophrenia seldom show severe attentional or information-processing dysfunctions, except in cases of long-term chronicity. The diagnostic specificity of four putative psychological vulnerability indicators of schizophrenia - the Span of Apprehension, the degraded stimulus Continuous Performance Test (dsCPT), the degraded stimulus visual backward masking task and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) - was examined in a group of patients with paranoid schizophrenia. Since no single test seems to identify all patients, the use of a combinati

Depression, Executive Dysfunction, and Prior Economic and Social Vulnerability Associations in Incarcerated African American Men.

Low executive function (EF) and depression are each determinants of health. This study examined the synergy between deficits in EF (impaired cognitive flexibility; >75th percentile on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test perseverative error score) and depressive symptoms (modified Centers for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression) and preincarceration well-being among incarcerated African American men ( N = 189). In adjusted analyses, having impaired EF and depression was strongly associated with pre-incarceration food insecurity (odds ratio [ OR] = 3.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.35, 10.77]), h

Cognitive deficits associated with frontal-lobe infarction in children with sickle cell disease.

This study examined the cognitive manifestations of frontal-lobe infarction in a population of children with sickle cell disease (SCD). Forty-one patients with SCD underwent MRI. Five patients with stroke symptoms had large infarcts encroaching on the tissue of the frontal lobes. Four patients without symptoms had smaller frontal-lobe infarcts. The patients with stroke were significantly impaired on measures of intelligence, memory, and frontal-lobe function (Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, WCST) compared with both the patients with normal MRI scans (N=30) and a group of sibling controls (N=15),

A study of visual and auditory verbal working memory in schizophrenic patients compared to healthy subjects.

Impaired working memory (WM) performance is considered as a central feature of schizophrenia. Divided into two components, verbal and spatial, WM has been shown to involve frontal and parietal regions. Verbal WM can be tested either visually or aurally. The present study aimed to test schizophrenic patients in both visual and auditory verbal WM in order to assess a possible distinct pattern of alteration of these two modalities. Twenty-four schizophrenic patients and 24 healthy controls were compared with 2-back continuous visual and auditory verbal WM testing. Both groups were also tested on
