Flame Retardancy and Thermal Behavior of Wool Fabric Treated with a Phosphorus-Containing Polycarboxylic Acid.

The compound 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA) is an eco-friendly water treatment agent possessing flame-retardant phosphorus element and multi-carboxylic acid groups in its molecular structure. In the present work, PBTCA is employed as a finishing agent to improve the flame retardancy of the wool fabrics by the pad-dry-cure technique. The treated wool (10.2% weight gain) by 100 g/L of PBTCA showed an increased flame retardancy with a limiting oxygen index value (LOI) of 44% with a minimum char length of 40 mm. Importantly, the treated wool can self-extinguish after 30 washing

Dissolution of Stone Wool Fibers with Phenol-urea-formaldehyde Binder in a Synthetic Lung Fluid.

Mineral wool products, composed of stone wool fibers and organic binder, are used in many construction applications. Among all their beneficial properties, the most important requirement is safety for human health, such as when fibers are inhaled. For determining long-term toxicity, biosolubility and biopersistence studies in vitro and in vivo are essential. In vitro fiber dissolution rate, which depends on the medium, fiber composition, and the surface available for dissolution, is a key parameter in determining biopersistence of the material in vivo. We investigated how organic binder (pheno

Debunking the Myth of Wool Allergy: Reviewing the Evidence for Immune and Non-immune Cutaneous Reactions.

Although wool is commonly believed to cause irritant (non-immune) and hypersensitivity (immune) cutaneous reactions, the evidence basis for this belief and its validity for modern garments have not been critically examined. Publications from the last 100 years, using MEDLINE and Google Scholar, were analysed for evidence that wool causes cutaneous reactions, both immune-mediated (atopic dermatitis exacerbation, contact urticaria, allergic contact dermatitis) and non-immune-mediated (irritant contact dermatitis, itch). Secondary aims of this paper were to examine evidence that lanolin and texti

Mortality patterns of rock and slag mineral wool production workers: an epidemiological and environmental study.

An epidemiological and environmental study of rock and slag mineral wool production workers was undertaken at a plant that has been in operation since the early 1900s. Size characteristics of fibres produced by each process at the plant and data from industrial hygiene surveys were used to evaluate current and past exposures. These data suggest that the average historical airborne fibre concentration probably did not exceed 2.5 fibres/cc before 1935 and 1.0 fibre/cc after 1935. A retrospective cohort mortality study was designed to assess mortality patterns. Detailed occupational histories wer

Optic Nerve Head Cotton Wool Spots Mimicking Inflammatory Optic Neuropathy in Central Retinal Vein Occlusion.

Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) typically presents with optic disc edema, venous dilation, and widespread retinal hemorrhages; however, atypical optic nerve head findings can mimic neuro-inflammatory or infiltrative disease, posing a diagnostic challenge. We report a 67-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia who presented for routine evaluation without visual symptoms and was found to have non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy bilaterally and clinical signs of non-ischemic CRVO in the left eye, including optic disc edema, hyperemia,

Determining Effects of Superfine Sheep wool in INfantile Eczema (DESSINE): a randomized paediatric crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Despite limited evidence, woollen clothing has traditionally been considered to be an irritant that should be avoided by individuals with atopic dermatitis (AD). Wool fibres come in a range of diameters, and have beneficial thermodynamic and moisture transport properties. OBJECTIVES: This study examines the effects of superfine merino wool on symptoms in participants with mild-to-moderate AD. METHODS: The trial was a 12-week, randomized, assessor-blinded, crossover, prospective, cohort study of 39 patients with mild-to-moderate AD, aged between 4 weeks and 3 years, comparing supe

Organophosphorus residues in wool grease resulting from specified on-farm lice and flystrike control treatments.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate wool organophosphorus concentrations resulting from a range of farm pesticide application methods. DESIGN: Random sampling of wool for pesticide residues and on-farm interviews to determine associated treatments. PROCEDURE: Tasmanian fleece wool lots were sampled at random and tested for organophosphorus residues. The grower was identified and the pesticide treatments applied to the sheep were ascertained by on-farm interview. RESULTS: The residue concentrations showed a large variation that was not accounted for by differences in treatments by growers. Organophosp

Improved B cell typing for HLA-DR using nylon wool column enriched B lymphocyte preparations.

A rapid, simple procedure for preparing B lymphocytes using nylon wool has been devised. When mixtures of T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and monocytes are applied to nylon wool columns, B lymphocytes can then be removed, virtually free of monocytes. Such preparations (Ad) are 85 +/- 6% SIg+ and have only 3 +/- 1% monocyte contamination. The yield from peripheral blood averages 5% of all mononuclear cells. In contrast, the E rosette depletion method (E-) yields cells which are only 64 +/- 5% SIg+ and have 25 +/- 7% monocyte contamination. The superiority of the nylon method for HLA-DR typing was

Meat, milk, wool and grain: The animal economy of medieval England (CE 400 to 1400).

Much has been written about the animal economy of medieval England (CE 450-1500) but interpretation of the zooarchaeological record has been held back by reliance on artificial periodisation. This study reduces that reliance via a novel approach to data synthesis. A substantial zooarchaeological dataset compiled for the 'Feeding Anglo-Saxon England' project was investigated allowing a more detailed understanding of when change took place and in what form. Key patterns include: a continuation of Roman husbandry practices at some sites throughout the fifth century; an increase in wool production

Occurrence and genetic diversity of Bacillus anthracis strains isolated in an active wool-cleaning factory.

Culturable microorganisms from various samples taken at an active factory performing wool and goat hair cleaning were isolated and analyzed. Bacillus anthracis was found in air filter dust, wastewater, and goat hairs, where it accounted for approximately 1% of the total counts of viable bacteria. Consistent with the countries of origin of the processed material (South Caucasian and Middle Eastern), all B. anthracis isolates belonged to the same phylogenetic cluster, as determined by variable-number tandem repeat (VNTR) typing at eight loci. Within this cluster, five closely related VNTR subtyp

Glass wool filtration leads to a higher percentage of spermatozoa with intact acrosomes: an ultrastructural analysis.

We investigated the possibility of ultrastructural damage to human spermatozoa induced by different sperm preparation techniques. Ejaculates from 20 normozoospermic men were divided into equal aliquots and processed by glass wool filtration, Percoll density gradient centrifugation, and a simple two-step centrifugation procedure which served as a control. The evaluation of 60 spermatozoa from each of 20 test subjects (in all, n = 1200) ensured that a sufficiently large number of spermatozoa were investigated. Ultrastructural damage was assessed by scanning electron microscopy. We investigated t

Pigmented spots in the wool-bearing skin on white merino sheep induced by ultraviolet light.

Black-grey pigmented skin spots, some of which contained pigmented wool fibres, were observed in a flock of 8.5-year-old white Merino ewes. The spots were concentrated along the backline and increased in number following shearing, suggesting exposure to sunlight to be of importance in the development of these non-congenital pigmented skin spots in genetically white Merino sheep. To test the effect of ultraviolet light, white Merino sheep, ranging in age from 3 to 8 years, had a closely clipped midside area of wool-bearing skin irradiated on each of 28 consecutive days. Pigmented skin spots dev

Growth of populations of lice, Damalinia ovis, on sheep and their effects on production and processing performance of wool.

Merino sheep were artificially infested with lice, Damalinia ovis, and the quantity and processing performance of the wool they subsequently produced was compared with those of wool from uninfested sheep. The experiment was conducted in a winter rainfall region of Western Australia, and was repeated yearly for three years. Louse infestation depressed clean wool production by 0.3-0.8 kg per sheep but did not affect live weight. This represented loss of income to the farmer of about $A0.72 to $A1.92 for each louse-infested sheep. The wool from lice-infested sheep, when processed into tops, yield

Genipin-directed assembly of zein-based colored nanostructures enabling one-step green multifunctionalization of wool.

Multifunctional finishing of textiles often relies on various chemical auxiliaries to achieve modification, which involves complicated procedures and poses environmental and health risks. In this study, ε-polylysine (ε-PL) was introduced into zein molecules using genipin (GNP) as a crosslinking agent to prepare colored recombinant zein (ε-PL-zein). The structure of ε-PL-zein was characterized by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and

Tract-wide transcriptomic and metabolomic profiling reveals gastrointestinal regionalization in Jiekarzi semi-fine wool sheep.

Jiekarzi semi-fine-wool sheep are indigenous to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and may face substantial demands on digestive efficiency under low temperatures, hypoxia and seasonal forage limitation. However, the molecular organization of the gastrointestinal tract in this breed remains insufficiently characterized. Here, we profiled mucosal transcriptomes and digestive-fluid metabolomes from 10 gastrointestinal segments collected from six 12-month-old male Jiekarzi. The segments were grouped into four digestive regions: forestomach, true stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Transcriptome

Merino wool graduated compression stocking increases lower limb venous blood flow: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Graduated compression stockings represent a nonpharmacological approach to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) due to prolonged immobility through reducing lower limb venous stasis. A novel merino wool, double-layer, below-knee graduated compression stocking has been developed to reduce the risk of air travel-related DVT and PE. METHODS: Twenty healthy adult participants were randomized to wear the novel graduated compression stocking on either the left or right leg. Doppler ultrasound measurements of popliteal venous blood flow were made on
