When words fail us: insights into language processing from developmental and acquired disorders.

Acquired disorders of language represent loss of previously acquired skills, usually with relatively specific impairments. In children with developmental disorders of language, we may also see selective impairment in some skills; but in this case, the acquisition of language or literacy is affected from the outset. Because systems for processing spoken and written language change as they develop, we should beware of drawing too close a parallel between developmental and acquired disorders. Nevertheless, comparisons between the two may yield new insights. A key feature of connectionist models s

Event-related brain potential imaging of semantic encoding during processing single words.

Functional brain imaging studies with positron emission tomography (PET) have identified blood flow changes in widely separated areas of brain during the performance of word processing tasks. In the present study we have utilized event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to investigate the temporal relationships among cortical areas previously identified by PET to be differentially activated when performing semantic tasks with visual words. ERPs revealed task-related differences over the central and left inferior frontal regions around 170 and 220 ms, respectively, over a left occipital region aro

Selective processing of eating, weight and shape related words in patients with eating disorders and dieters.

The Stroop colour-naming task was used to investigate selective processing of eating, weight and shape related words in two groups of dieters, patients with anorexia nervosa, patients with bulimia nervosa and a group of non-dieting controls. 'Normal dieters' were not different from the non-dieting controls. Dieters with a history of features of an eating disorder but no diagnosis and the patients with anorexia nervosa, like the patients with bulimia nervosa, showed selective processing of information related to eating, weight and shape.

The relationship between phonological processing skills and word and nonword identification performance in children with mild intellectual disabilities.

Word and nonword identification skills were examined in a sample of 80 elementary school age students with mild intellectual disabilities and mixed etiologies who were described as struggling to learn to read by their teachers. Performance on measures of receptive and expressive vocabulary, measures of phonological awareness, and measures of word and nonword identification were included for analyses. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that, after controlling for chronological age and vocabulary knowledge, phonological processing accounted for a large and significant amount of unique va

Cortical activation during word processing in late bilinguals: similarities and differences as revealed by functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to compare cortical organization of the first (L1, Russian) and second (L2, English) languages. Six fluent Russian-English bilinguals who acquired their second language postpuberty were tested with words and nonwords presented either auditorily or visually. Results showed that both languages activated similar cortical networks, including the inferior frontal, middle frontal, superior temporal, middle temporal, angular, and supramarginal gyri. Within the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), L2 activated a larger cortical volume than L1 during lexical and

Reprint of: Visual processing of words in a patient with visual form agnosia: A behavioural and fMRI study.

Patient D.F. has a profound and enduring visual form agnosia due to a carbon monoxide poisoning episode suffered in 1988. Her inability to distinguish simple geometric shapes or single alphanumeric characters can be attributed to a bilateral loss of cortical area LO, a loss that has been well established through structural and functional fMRI. Yet despite this severe perceptual deficit, D.F. is able to "guess" remarkably well the identity of whole words. This paradoxical finding, which we were able to replicate more than 20 years following her initial testing, raises the question as to whether

Electrocortical evidence for an early abnormal processing of panic-related words in panic disorder patients.

Panic patients are hypothesized to have particularly elaborated cortical networks for panic-related stimuli, and this characteristic should be associated with an abnormal automatic processing of these stimuli. Panic-related and neutral words were presented to 25 panic patients and 25 matched healthy controls either at individually determined perception thresholds (threshold condition) or for 1000 ms (above threshold condition). Word recognition for words presented at perception threshold (threshold words), and event-related brain potentials (ERPs) triggered by threshold and above threshold wor

Explicit and implicit processing of words and pseudowords by adult developmental dyslexics: A search for Wernicke's Wortschatz?

Two groups of male university students who had been diagnosed as dyslexic when younger, and two groups of control subjects of similar age and IQ to the dyslexics, were scanned whilst reading aloud and during a task where reading was implicit. The dyslexics performed less well than their peers on a range of literacy tasks and were strikingly impaired on phonological tasks. In the reading aloud experiment, simple words and pseudowords were presented at a slow pace so that reading accuracy was equal for dyslexics and controls. Relative to rest, both normal and dyslexic groups activated the same p

[The effects of unconscious processing of hostility-related words and physiological arousal upon person perception].

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of the physiological arousal and the prior subconscious processing of hostility-related words upon the cognitive complexity in person perception. First, sixteen male and 16 female college students performed a cognitive task in which they processed hostility-related words or neutral words unconsciously in a high arousal or a normal arousal state. In the second ostensibly unrelated task, the subjects were presented with an ambiguous description of target person's mild hostile behavior and they were asked to rate the impression of the ta

[The effects of conscious and subconscious processing of hostility- or friendliness-related words on the personality impression of others].

Four experiments were conducted to investigate how the prior processing of trait relevant information influenced upon the impression formation. Twenty university students participated in each experiment. First subjects performed a cognitive task in which they processed hostility (Exp. I, II) or friendliness (Exp. III, IV) related words, consciously (Exp. I, III) or subconsciously (Exp. II, IV). In another ostensibly unrelated task, subjects rated a stimulus person on several trait scales based on an ambiguous behavioral description, regarding to hostility (Exp. I, II) or friendliness (Exp. Do patients with pure alexia suffer from a specific word form processing deficit? Evidence from 'wrods with trasnpsoed letetrs'.

It is widely accepted that letter-by-letter reading and a pronounced increase in reading time as a function of word length are the hallmark features of pure alexia. Why patients show these two phenomena with respect to underlying cognitive mechanisms is, however, much less clear. Two main hypotheses have been proposed, i.e. impaired discrimination of letters and deficient processing of word forms. While the former deficit can easily be investigated in isolation, previous findings favouring the latter seem confounded. Applying a word reading paradigm with systematically manipulated letter order

Behavioural and electrophysiological analyses of written word processing in spoken and literary Arabic: New insights into the diglossia question.

Diglossia in Arabic describes the existence and the use of two varieties of the same language: spoken Arabic (SA) and literary Arabic (LA). SA, the dialect first spoken by Arabic native speakers, is used in non-formal situations for everyday conversations, and varies from one region to another in the Arabic world. LA, acquired later in life when the children learn to read and write at school, is used for formal purposes such as media, speeches in public and religious sermons. Previous research showed that, in the auditory modality, SA words are processed faster than LA ones. In the visual moda

How young children learn mental state words: Decision processes and links to theory of mind.

Learning words that refer to mental states is a critical developmental milestone, yet how these words are learned remains poorly understood. In this study, 102 Chinese young children (Mage = 3.28; 45 girls) and 102 young adults (Mage = 22.67; 54 women) completed a novel word-learning task, in which a pseudoword was paired with videos depicting goal-directed reaching and distressed crying. Results indicated that children had difficulty learning mental state words, as reflected by their lower accuracy compared to adults. Diffusion model analyses further explored the underlying processes and foun

Dual-route processing of horizontally and vertically jumbled Chinese words: evidence from ND250 and LAN.

Previous research suggests that visual recognition of two-character Chinese compound words relies on a dual-route mechanism involving whole-word orthographic processing and morphological decomposition, both of which remain engaged for horizontally presented jumbled words. The present study investigated whether this flexible dual-route mechanism generalizes to vertically presented jumbled words and whether the two processing routes differ in their sensitivity to presentation orientation (horizontal vs. vertical) and character order (canonical vs. jumbled). Event-related potentials (ERPs) were m

In patients' words: natural language processing of reports from patients experiencing orofacial pain and dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Provision of value-based, patient-centered care requires careful appraisal of patients’ symptoms. Understanding subjective experiences, needs, and feelings is crucial for shared decision-making, especially when clinical findings differ from individual perceptions. Natural language processing (NLP) offers new ways to understand patients’ perspectives. This exploratory pilot study aimed to exemplify the use of three popular NLP methods to analyze open-ended textual self-reports from individuals experiencing orofacial pain and dysfunction for a more comprehensive understanding of thei

Basic processes in reading: semantics affects speeded naming of high-frequency words in an alphabetic script.

Previous work on single-word naming in university-level readers has shown that semantic factors affect the naming of low frequency words both in an alphabetic script like English, which is often irregular in terms of the spelling-sound correspondences, and in the syllabic Japanese Kana script, in which the spelling-sound correspondences are consistent. The present experiment shows that a semantic factor (imageability) affects naming time to both low- and high-frequency words in an alphabetic script (Persian) when the word is opaque (vowels not specified) but not when it is transparent (vowels

Selective processing of shape-related words in women with eating disorders, and those who have recovered.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to investigate whether women with anorexia or bulimia nervosa and women who had recovered showed cognitive bias towards shape, food and adolescent issues. DESIGN: A five-group analysis of variance design was used, in which the different client groups were the independent variables. The dependent variable was performance on an emotional Stroop task. METHODS: Current anorexia sufferers (N = 31), current bulimia sufferers (N = 24), recovered anorexics (N = 23), recovered bulimics (N = 11) and women who had never suffered from eating disorders (N = 33) were recruite

Food-related salience processing in healthy subjects during word recognition: Fronto-parietal network activation as revealed by independent component analysis.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to isolate and localize mutually independent cognitive processes evoked during a word recognition task involving food-related and food-neutral words using independent component analysis (ICA) for continuously recorded EEG data. Recognition memory (old/new effect) involves cognitive subcomponents-familiarity and recollection-which may be temporally and spatially dissociated in the brain. Food words may evoke additional attentional salience which may interact with the old/new effect. METHODS: Sixteen satiated female participants undertook a word recognition task cons

Phonological deficits in dyslexia impede lexical processing of spoken words: Linking behavioural and MEG data.

Phonological difficulties have been identified as a core deficit in developmental dyslexia, yet everyday speech comprehension, which relies on phonological processing, is seemingly unaffected. This raises the question as to how dyslexic readers process spoken words to achieve normal word comprehension. Here we establish a link between neural correlates of lexical and sublexical processing in auditory words and behaviourally measured phonological deficits using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Spatiotemporally resolved cortical responses to phonological and lexico-semantic information were compute

Observing, performing, and understanding actions: revisiting the role of cortical motor areas in processing of action words.

Language content and action/perception have been shown to activate common brain areas in previous neuroimaging studies. However, it is unclear whether overlapping cortical activation reflects a common neural source or adjacent, but distinct, sources. We address this issue by using multivoxel pattern analysis on fMRI data. Specifically, participants were instructed to engage in five tasks: (1) execute hand actions (AE), (2) observe hand actions (AO), (3) observe nonbiological motion (MO), (4) read action verbs, and (5) read nonaction verbs. A classifier was trained to distinguish between data c
