Sexual and drug-related vulnerabilities for HIV infection among women engaged in survival sex work in Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Women engaged in survival sex work face multiple sexual and drug-related harms that directly enhance their vulnerability to HIV infection. Although research on injection-drug-using women has explored predictors of sex work and HIV infection, little information currently exists on the complex vulnerabilities to HIV transmission faced by survival sex workers in this setting. This analysis aimed to determine HIV prevalence among women engaged in survival sex work, and explore sexual and drug-related vulnerabilities associated with baseline infection. METHODS: Descriptive and univaria

Perceived algorithmic control and gig workers' work engagement: assessing the mediating role of psychological empowerment and the moderating effect of deep acting.

BACKGROUND: Online labor platforms rely on algorithmic control to manage gig work, but its impact on work engagement remains contested. Existing research predominantly adopts technological determinism perspectives, neglecting gig workers' agency, and lacking systematic exploration of motivational mechanisms and emotional resources. Based on Self-Determination Theory, this study examines how perceived algorithmic control influences work engagement through psychological empowerment, with deep acting as a moderator. METHODS: Data were collected from Chinese gig workers (delivery riders/ride-hail

The relationship between technostress and work engagement among college physical education teachers: a chain mediation model of job crafting and emotional intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Technostress refers to a psychological stress state arising from an individual's inability to cope with the demands or expectations associated with information technology use, and is closely related to teachers' work attitudes and behavioral performance. However, the psychological mechanism through which technostress is associated with work engagement among college physical education (PE) teachers remains unclear. This study tested a theoretically-based chain mediation model examining the associations among technostress, job crafting, emotional intelligence, and work engagement amo

Empowering leadership and university teachers' work engagement: the mediating role of job crafting and the moderating role of role breadth self-efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: University teachers work under growing workload, performance, and role pressures, making work engagement an important concern for higher education institutions. Drawing on job demands-resources theory, this study examined whether job crafting mediates the association between empowering leadership and work engagement and whether role breadth self-efficacy (RBSE) moderates this indirect relationship among university teachers. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 468 university teachers in China. The hypothesized mediation and moderated mediation

Antenatal care presentation and engagement in the context of sex work: exploring barriers to care for sex worker mothers in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Late presentation combined with limited engagement in antenatal care (ANC) increases risk of vertical transmission among mothers living with HIV. Female sex workers (FSW) have more than four times greater burden of HIV than other women of reproductive age in South Africa and the majority of FSW are mothers. For mothers who sell sex and are at increased HIV acquisition risk, timely and routine ANC seeking is especially vital for prevention of vertical transmission. This study represents a mixed-methods study with FSW in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, to characterize factors influenci

The driving mechanism of psychological capital on employees' innovative behavior: the mediating role of work engagement and the moderating role of coaching leadership.

Employee innovative behavior is an important micro-level source of organizational competitiveness. Grounded in conservation of resources (COR) theory, with the job demands-resources (JD-R) model specifying the complementary motivational process, this study examines how PsyCap is associated with innovative behavior and whether this association varies with coaching leadership. Survey data from knowledge workers in Chinese enterprises showed a positive association between PsyCap and innovative behavior. Work engagement partially mediated this association. Coaching leadership was positively associ

Predictors of work engagement among rural and remote nurses who provide hospice, palliative, and end of life care: Results from a national study.

BACKGROUND: The availability of palliative health care professionals is considered a global concern, especially within rural/remote practice settings. Nurses across all domains of practice are expected to advocate for high-quality hospice, palliative, and end of life (H/P/EOL) care. However, within many rural/remote geographical areas, formal palliative care services are non-existent, leaving generalist nurses to take on this complex responsibility. METHODS: Examining results from a Pan-Canadian cross-sectional survey of rural and remote nurses (N = 3,822), this paper explores a subset (n = 2

A 1-year longitudinal study on experiencing workplace cyberbullying, affective well-being and work engagement of teachers: The mediating effect of cognitive reappraisal.

Research on experiencing workplace cyberbullying (WCB) and its underlying mechanisms that impact the well-being of teachers is scarce. We propose that cognitive reappraisal, which is a useful and adaptive emotion-regulation strategy for reinterpreting emotion-eliciting situations, is a mediator explaining the inverse relationships between experiencing WCB and well-being. A three-wave longitudinal survey (baseline, T1; 3 months, T2; and 1 year, T3) was conducted with a sample of 444 primary and secondary schoolteachers in Hong Kong, China. Exposure to WCB, cognitive reappraisal, affective well-

PrEP facilitators and barriers in substance use bridge clinics for women who engage in sex work and who use drugs.

BACKGROUND: Women who engage in sex work and use drugs (WSWUD) experience disproportionate HIV risks. Substance use treatment bridge clinics offer an opportunity to increase HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) delivery to WSWUD, but research on best practices is lacking. Therefore, we explored facilitators and barriers to PrEP across the PrEP care continuum in these settings. METHODS: Bridge clinic and affiliated harm reduction health service providers and WSWUD from Boston were recruited using passive and active outreach between December 2021 and August 2022. Participants were invited to tak

Sexual Violence, Genital Cytokines, and Colposcopy Findings: A Cross-Sectional Study of Women Engaged in Sex Work in Mombasa, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence (SV) increases human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) susceptibility in a sustained manner. This study evaluated genital cytokines and colposcopy findings in women reporting both recent and more remote SV. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of HIV-1 negative Kenyan women who engage in sex work was performed. Cervicovaginal fluid was collected by menstrual cup and cytokines (IFNγ, TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, MIP-1α, MIP-1β, and CXCL10) measured using chemiluminescence. Cervical injury was assessed by colposcopy. Associations between recent (≤30 days prior), more remote (>30

Examining clinicians' perceptions and experiences working with diverse families in family-based treatment: Common adaptations and considerations for treatment engagement.

OBJECTIVE: Family-Based Treatment (FBT) is the leading manualized treatment for adolescent eating disorders; however, there is limited research on the adaptation of FBT for diverse families (i.e., families belonging to identity groups subject to systemic barriers and prejudices). The purpose of this qualitative study was to address: (1) adaptations made to the FBT model (if any) by clinicians working with diverse youth and families; (2) the barriers/facilitators of maintaining adherence (fidelity) to the model for these families; and, (3) the barriers/facilitators to access and engagement in F

The relationships among working alliance, group cohesion and homework engagement in group cognitive behaviour therapy for social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have investigated the role of generic relational factors, such as group cohesion and working alliance, in group cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD). The aim of this study was to examine the temporal associations among working alliance, group cohesion, and an index of a CBT-specific factor, homework engagement, as correlates of fear of negative evaluation and symptoms of social anxiety in group CBT for SAD. METHOD: There were 105 participants with a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder who were randomly assigned to 12 sessions of group ima

The impact of violence on sex risk and drug use behaviors among women engaged in sex work in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Violence, substance use, and HIV disproportionately impact female entertainment and sex workers (FESW), but causal pathways remain unclear. METHODS: We examined data from an observational cohort of FESW age 15-29 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for associations between violence exposure and sexual risk and drug use. Validated measures of physical and sexual violence were assessed at baseline. Self-reported outcomes measured quarterly over the next 12-months included past month sexual partners, consistent condom use by partner type, sex while high, and amphetamine type stimulant (ATS) use.

On the Role of Academic Buoyancy and Self-Efficacy in Predicting Teachers' Work Engagement: A Case of Chinese English as a Foreign Language Teachers.

A plethora of scientific evidence has pinpointed that teaching English as a foreign or second language (EFL) is difficult, challenging, and emotionally burdensome. Nevertheless, most English language teachers remain committed to the teaching profession and actively engage in the instructional environment. This has inspired several scholars worldwide to explore what personal, emotional, and psychological factors motivate English language teachers to engage enthusiastically in their workplace. While a large body of studies have to date examined the personal, emotional, and psychological predicto

Structural brain correlates of executive engagement in working memory: children's inter-individual differences are reflected in the anterior insular cortex.

Although the development of executive functions has been extensively investigated at a neurofunctional level, studies of the structural relationships between executive functions and brain anatomy are still scarce. Based on our previous meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies examining executive functions in children (Houdé, Rossi, Lubin, and Joliot, (2010). Developmental Science, 13, 876-885), we investigated six a priori regions of interest: the left anterior insular cortex (AIC), the left and the right supplementary motor areas, the right middle and superior frontal gyri, and the le
