Work-family conflict and burnout in night-shift nurses with children: the mediating roles of recovery experience and fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Burnout among nurses is a major global concern, particularly among those working night shifts, which can compromise the quality of nursing care, increase turnover intentions, and threaten the stability of the nursing workforce. Previous studies have shown that work-family conflict correlates positively with burnout in nurses, but not enough research has been performed on its relationship among night-shift nurses with children. In addition, the mechanism of this relationship is not completely clear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the relationships among work-family conflict

Dissociation between subjective sleep quality and lipid dysregulation in underground miners: night shift work as an independent risk factor for hypercholesterolemia.

OBJECTIVE: Shift work disrupts circadian rhythms and is established as a risk factor for metabolic syndrome. While poor sleep quality is often hypothesized as the primary mediator linking shift work to dyslipidemia, the extent to which circadian misalignment affects lipid metabolism independently of sleep complaints remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the independent and combined effects of shift work and sleep quality on serum lipid profiles in a cohort of male underground miners. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 921 male miners from the Kailuan Group. Partic

Association of rotating night shift work with tooth loss and severe periodontitis among permanent employees in Japan: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Severe aortic stenosis (AS) can be treated with transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). There is emerging evidence suggesting that high lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) levels may be associated with worse outcomes after TAVI. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs) within 12 months after TAVI and long‑term survival in patients with high and low Lp(a) levels. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter cohort study we included patients with severe AS qualified for TAVI with stored plasma available for Lp(a) measurement.

Shift work and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in young, healthy workers.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a relatively common disease, and preventing its occurrence is important for both individual health and reducing social costs. Shift work is reported to have several negative effects on health. An association has been observed between NAFLD and both sleep time and quality; however, this association remains unclear in night shift workers. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between shift work and the incidence of NAFLD. Overall, 45,149 Korean workers without NAFLD were included at baseline. NAFLD was defined as the presence of a fatty liver observed

The effects of shift work on the functional alteration in immune cells on hospital female nurses engaged in the morning and night shifts: Correlating with psychological stress and immune functions.

Shift work has been increasingly associated with alterations in immune regulation and stress responses. Circadian alteration, sleep disruption, and occupational stressors collectively impair immune status. However, the specific association between shift work, psychological stress, and the immune function of monocytes, neutrophils and lymphocytes among female nurses is still not clear. The aim of our study is to evaluate the association between shift work, psychological stress, and immune cell functions in female nurses using a within-subject design. A cross-sectional, repeated-measures observa

Rotating shiftwork in men is linked to decreased fecundity, attributable primarily to sperm concentration and vitality: 24-month follow-up in 3425 males of PREBIC cohort.

BACKGROUND: Previous observational studies investigating the association between shift work and male fecundity employed retrospective designs and reported inconsistent findings. The distinction between rotating and fixed shift work has been noticed but not often taken into consideration in the field of reproductive health. Whether semen parameters played a role in this relationship was also unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to prospectively evaluate the association between male rotating shift work and achieving a successful pregnancy, and to assess the contribution of semen parameters to t

Association between shift work and insulin resistance in women: Implications for metabolic health.

Shift work has been associated with circadian rhythm disruption and related metabolic disturbances, with women potentially being more vulnerable due to physiological and hormonal characteristics. Research on the correlation between shift work and insulin resistance in women outside hospital nursing settings remains scarce. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between shift work and insulin resistance in working-age women, using the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index as a surrogate marker. Data from 3,780 female participants aged 19-64 years were collected from the 2019-2021 Korea

Research priorities to reduce risks from work hours and fatigue in the healthcare and social assistance sector.

BACKGROUND: The services of Healthcare and Social Assistance (HCSA) workers are needed by society around the clock. As a result, these workers are exposed to shift work and long work hours. The combination of demanding work schedules and other hazards in the HCSA work environment increases the health and safety risks to these workers, as well as to their patients/clients and the public. METHODS: This paper has three aims: (1) provide an overview of the burden of shift work, long hours, and related sleep and fatigue problems in this sector; (2) suggest research priorities that would improve th

Circadian disruption, sleep loss, and prostate cancer risk: a systematic review of epidemiologic studies.

Disruption of the circadian system has been hypothesized to increase cancer risk, either because of direct disruption of the molecular machinery generating circadian rhythms or because of disruption of parameters controlled by the clock such as melatonin levels or sleep duration. This hypothesis has been studied in hormone-dependent cancers among women, but data are sparse about potential effects of circadian disruption on the risk of prostate cancer. This review systematically examines available data evaluating the effects of light at night, sleep patterns, and night shift work on prostate ca
