The effects of economic deprivation on psychological well-being among the working population of Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: The association between poverty and mental health has been widely investigated. There is, however, limited evidence of mental health implications of working poverty, despite its representing a rapidly expanding segment of impoverished populations in many developed nations. In this study, we examined whether working poverty in Switzerland, a country with substantial recent growth among the working poor, was correlated with two dependent variables of interest: psychological health and unmet mental health need. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data drawn from the first 3 wave

Investigating the work-family conflict and health link: Repetitive thought as a mechanism.

Research is needed to investigate mechanisms linking work-family conflict to poor health in working adults. We took a novel approach to build on extant studies by testing a potential mechanism in these associations - repetitive thought. Data came from a sample of 203 partnered working adults. There were significant direct effects of work-family conflict with lower life satisfaction, positive affect, and perceived health as well as greater fatigue. As for total effects, work-family conflict was significantly associated with all health outcomes - life satisfaction, positive affect, negative affe

[Trichloroethylene concentration in the work environment in relation to the development of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis].

Four cases of primary pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) were studied in relation to occupational trichloroethylene (TRI) exposure. Three of the patients were exposed to TRI in the process of washing or polishing of camera lenses. The maximum concentration of TRI in the work environment of two PCI patients often exceeded 50 ppm, though the geometric mean concentrations were below this value. Monitoring of TRI exposure by measuring urinary TRI metabolites suggested that the third patient had been working in the environment with an 8-h time weighted average TRI concentration exceeding 50 p

Functioning, coping and work status three years after participating in an interdisciplinary, occupational rehabilitation program.

AIM: The aim of this study was to explore how functional ability, coping and health were related to work and benefit status three years after participating in a four-week inpatient interdisciplinary occupational rehabilitation program. METHODS: The cohort consisted of 338 individuals (75% females, mean age 51 years (SD=8.6)) who three years earlier had participated in a comprehensive inpatient interdisciplinary occupational rehabilitation program, due to long-term sick leave. The participants answered standardised questionnaires about subjective health complaints, functional ability, coping,

On the importance of anchoring and the consequences of its impairment in dyslexia.

One of the main impediments of individuals with reading difficulties and individuals with language difficulties is poor working memory. Typically measured using verbal stimuli, working memory deficits have often been considered as one aspect of the phonological difficulty putatively underlying dyslexia. Over the years it has been shown that a broad range of auditory discrimination abilities are also mildly impaired. Here we present evidence that a domain general, rather than a phonology specific, deficits in the ability to implicitly use contextual information, which we term anchoring, can acc

Mass imprisonment and the life course revisited: Cumulative years spent imprisoned and marked for working-age black and white men.

Over the last 40 years, imprisonment has become a common stage in the life-course for low-skilled and minority men, with implications not only for inequality among adult men but also for inequality more broadly. Unfortunately, all research documenting how increases in imprisonment have transformed the life-course of poor, minority men has neglected to estimate how much time black and white men on average spend imprisoned or marked as an ex-prisoner. In this article, we fill this gap by using multistate life tables to estimate what share of their working lives (18-64) black and white men will s

Alterations of functional connectivity in young people with depression mediate the relationship between sleep quality and cognitive function.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances is common in young people with depression, and poor sleep quality affects the ability to learn. In this study, we examined possible resting-state functional connectivity abnormalities between regions of interest, and clarified the relationship with depressive symptoms, sleep quality, and cognitive function. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was collected on 42 healthy controls (HCs), 82 youth depressive patients (44 without sleep disturbances (NSD), and 38 with sleep disturbances (SD)). Regions of interest were defined by using

Assessment and treatment of short-term and working memory impairments in stroke aphasia: a practical tutorial.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia following stroke refers to impairments that affect the comprehension and expression of spoken and/or written language, and co-occurring cognitive deficits are common. In this paper we focus on short-term and working memory impairments that impact on the ability to retain and manipulate auditory-verbal information. Evidence from diverse paradigms (large group studies, case studies) report close links between short-term/working memory and language functioning in aphasia. This evidence leads to the hypothesis that treating such memory impairments would improve language functio

Do emotion regulation difficulties explain the association between executive functions and child physical abuse risk?

This study examined the associations between executive functioning problems, emotion regulation difficulties, and risk for perpetrating child physical abuse (CPA). It was hypothesized that: (a) poor executive functions (i.e., working memory problems and inhibition/switching problems) would be associated with higher levels of emotion regulation difficulties and CPA risk; (b) emotion regulation difficulties would be positively associated with CPA risk; and (c) emotion regulation difficulties would partially explain the association between executive functions (i.e., working memory problems and in

Neurophysiological correlates of motor and working memory performance following subthalamic nucleus stimulation.

Subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) has become an accepted treatment for the motor manifestations of Parkinson disease (PD). The beneficial motor effects of STN DBS are likely due to modulation of BG output to frontal cortical regions associated with motor control, but the underlying neurophysiology of STN DBS effects, especially at the level of the cortex, is not well understood. In this study, we examined the effects of STN DBS on motor disability and visual working memory, a cognitive process supported by pFC. We tested 10 PD participants off medications, ON and OFF stimu

Frontoparietal theta tACS nonselectively enhances encoding, maintenance, and retrieval stages in visuospatial working memory.

Neurobiological and cognitive evidence suggests that working memory is processed through three distinctive and well-characterized phases: encoding, maintenance, and retrieval. Several studies have reported that applying theta transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to the right prefrontal and parietal cortices can significantly improve visual working memory performance. However, it remains unclear whether the facilitative effect of tACS on visual working memory is due to a domain-general or stage-specific process. In this study, we combined pre-task right frontoparietal theta tACS
