BACKGROUND: Traumatic esophageal injury leads to severe complications such as mediastinitis, pyothorax, and tracheoesophageal fistula. Although prompt diagnosis and treatment are required, there are no established protocols to guide diagnosis or treatment. In particular, thoracic esophageal injury tends to be diagnosed later than cervical esophageal injury because it has few specific symptoms. We report a case of thoracic esophageal injury caused by a cervical stab wound; the patient was stabbed with a sharp blade.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus terreus, a saprophytic fungus, is recognized as an emerging pathogen in various infections in humans. However, bone and joint involvement is uncommon. To the best of our knowledge, only seven cases of spondylodiscitis caused by Aspergillus terreus have been reported previously in humans. We report a case of a patient with Aspergillus terreus spondylodiscitis following an abdominal stab wound.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old Japanese man with no particular medical history fell from a ladder and sustained a left abdominal stab wound from an L-shaped metal peg. Computed

A 58-year-old man presented to the neurosurgical emergencies for a transzygomatic transcranial stab wound with a retained broken knife. The patient was neurologically intact. After radiographic evaluation the knife was found to be penetrating the temporal lobe, neighboring the intracavernous portion of the carotid artery. The patient was successfully managed in a conservative way. No abnormalities were seen at 12 months of follow-up. Dealing with penetrating head injuries is a usual condition in neurosurgical practice. Some situations are though really challenging, especially when the offendin

We present a case of a patient with a seemingly insignificant single gluteal stab wound which led to a solitary perforation of the ileum and delayed peritonitis. This case report illustrates that, despite the absence of any signs of bowel perforation on presentation, a patient may deteriorate gradually in the subsequent hours. This demonstrates the role of clinical observation in high risk gluteal stab wound patients.

Only 18 cases of stab wounds to the pregnant uterus have been reported to date. This paper presents an additional case--a patient at 26 weeks' gestation with multiple voluntary stab wounds to the abdomen and lower chest resulting in fetal death. The literature is reviewed and management of abdominal stab wounds in pregnancy is discussed.

Emergency treatment of penetrating injury to the internal carotid artery at the skull base and within the temporal bone is difficult due to problems of exposure and control of this vessel. A successful method of management of a patient whose carotid artery was completely transected by a stab wound to the ear is presented. This involved gaining proximal vascular control in the neck and distal control intracranially. Indications for extracranial-intracranial vascular bypass procedures are discussed.

Instruments that create stab wounds are required to possess tips of sufficient strength and rigidity to breach the integrity of the skin. Knives, the most common weapons used to create stab wounds, have cutting edges that cleave the skin, leaving unabraded margins. On rare occasions, blunt objects are driven with sufficient force to pierce the skin and become impaled within the body. The morphologic differences between the cutaneous injuries and wound tracks of stab wounds from sharp objects and impalement with blunt ones provide clear delineation of the two. However, elements from the scene a

Candida albicans spondylodiscitis is a fungal infection of the spine which is still unusual in spite of the increasing frequency of predisposing factors. A 22-year-old man received an abdominal stab wound during a physical assault. Initial medical care included surgery, prolonged use of indwelling vascular catheters with administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics, and hospitalization in intensive care. Two months after the event, the victim experienced back pain in the right lumbar region and septic spondylodiscitis secondary to C. albicans was diagnosed three weeks later. This case is notew

Non-missile penetrating spinal cord injuries are uncommon, and involvement of the craniocervical junction is even less frequent. The author reports a case of 42-year-old male who presented with quadriparesis immediately following stab injury inflicted with a kitchen knife to the back of his neck. The knife was retained in the patient's neck. Neurological examination revealed spastic paraplegia and severe weakness of the left upper limb and the right-hand grip, and sensory disturbance from C2 and downwards. In addition to these symptoms, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was leaking from the wound. Com

We report, from the aspect of 'acting' capability, an autopsy case of suicide by hanging in which multiple deep stab wounds were observed in the neck and chest. A 49-year-old man was found dead in a state typical of hanging. His car was found about 100m away with a blood-stained climber's knife on the seat. Multiple incised and stab wounds were in the neck, with a lesion of the right inner jugular vein. Three penetrating stab wounds of the chest punctured the lungs, with pooling of about 500ml of blood in the left thorax and about 100ml in the right. Two other shallow stab wounds were in the c

Not every patient with a penetrating stab wound of the abdomen requires laparotomy. This report evaluates use of computerized tomographic (CT) scan in assessment of stable asymptomatic patients, with penetrating abdominal stab wounds, as an indicator of the necessity of abdominal exploration. In a prospective study, 50 patients with abdominal stab wounds were treated successfully with observation only, after admission abdominal CT scan interpretation was negative for pathology in 45 patients. In the remaining five it was of such minor nature that conservative management was justified (Series I

Haemothorax, haemopneumothorax, and pneumothorax were the most common complications in 85 patients with penetrating stab injuries of the chest. These complications were amenable to conservative treatment by aspiration or drainage of the pleural space. Immediate operation was indicated in 30 cases. Indications for surgery were haemorrhage from a major systemic or pulmonary vessel or the heart, cardiac tamponade, diaphragmatic penetration, oesophageal and bronchial tears, and sucking chest wounds. The need for immediate operation was clinically obvious at presentation in most cases. It should ha

BACKGROUND: Although there is evidence that self-inflicted abdominal stab wounds are less severe than those from assault, it is unclear if this is true in other anatomic regions. This study compares severity and injury pattern between self-inflicted stab wounds (SISWs) and wounds from assault (ASW).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Stab wounds from our level I trauma registry from 2013 to 2018 were reviewed. Data included age, gender, self-inflicted versus assault, psychiatric or substance use history, anatomic location, operative intervention, injury severity, length of stay, and outcomes.
RESULTS: O

Chest computed tomography (CCT) is used to screen for injuries in hemodynamically stable patients with penetrating injury. We aim to determine the incidence of missed injuries detected on CCT after a negative chest radiograph (CXR) in patients with thoracic stab wounds. A 10-year retrospective review of a Level I trauma center registry was performed on patients with thoracic stab wounds. Patients who were hemodynamically unstable or did not undergo both CXR and CCT were excluded. Patients with a negative CXR were evaluated to determine if additional findings were diagnosed on CCT. INTRODUCTION: Penetrating injuries of the pancreas may result in serious complications. This study assessed the factors influencing morbidity after stab wounds of the pancreas.
METHODS: A retrospective univariate cohort analysis was carried out of 78 patients (74 men) with a median age of 26 years (range: 16-62 years) with stab wounds of the pancreas between 1982 and 2011.
RESULTS: The median revised trauma score (RTS) was 7.8 (range: 2.0-7.8). Injuries involved the body (n=36), tail (n=24), head/uncinate process (n=16) and neck (n=2) of the pancreas. All 78 patients underwent a laparotomy.

Diaphragmatic injuries due to thoraco-abdominal penetrating trauma may often go unnoticed at the initial admission, especially in patients who are asymptomatic, with stable hemodynamic and respiratory parameters. Such occult diaphragmatic perforations can result in latent morbidity and mortality due to delayed trans-diaphragmatic herniation of the abdominal viscera leading to incarceration, strangulation and perforation. Here we report a case of an initially asymptomatic patient who had sustained multiple truncal stab injuries and presented two months later with a trans-thoracic incarceration

Differentiation between the various manner of stab cases is challenging in forensic medicine. Although the distinction between homicidal and suicidal stabbing is well defined, there is a lack of discrimination between accidental and homicidal cases. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the characteristics of and outcomes for stab patients admitted to multiple emergency hospitals to highlight the distinction between accidental and homicidal stab wounds. This prospective cohort study assessed all patients with stab wounds admitted to multiple emergency hospitals from February 2021 to October 20
