INTRODUCTION: The impact of aging on proprioceptive senses remains an open question. As the senses of position and force may rely on different neural substrates, we investigated the effect of aging on both senses to provide original and more comprehensive data on age-related changes in proprioception.
METHODS: The senses of position and force were assessed in several conditions using position- and force-reproduction tasks in young (20-40 years) and older (60-90 years) adults in the wrist (experiment 1, n = 41, 20 older adults) and ankle joints (experiment 2, n = 46, 24 older adults).

The control of joint stiffness is a fundamental mechanism used to control human movements. Synovial cysts of the pulp of the little finger in three elderly patients were shown by arthrography to arise from leakage of synovial fluid from the wrist joint into the ulnar bursa and thence into the flexor synovial sheath in the digit. Distant as well as local sources of the contents of synovial cysts should be considered when the local anatomy permits communication between a degenerate joint and an adjacent tendon sheath.

Purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of a low field dedicated MRI system in hand and wrist imaging. An objective method of measuring isometric wrist, finger (metacarpophalangeal joints) and thumb extension strength was developed, and values for a normal population were defined. Disability due to extensor dysfunction was not assessed in this study. The testing technique involved the use of a load cell myometer held in a specially constructed jig. Eighty-nine late results (five to twelve years follow-up) of prosthetic replacement of the scaphoid bone with a silastic spacer are presented. In 76% the clinical course was uncomplicated; 24% needed secondary surgical procedures including two arthrodeses of the wrist joint.
