Radionuclide breast scintigraphy was evaluated as a noninvasive tumor-localizing modality. Technetium-99m-pertechnetate (99mTcO4) demonstrated good correlation between malignancy and postive scintigraphy (88% accuracy in 16 cases of breast carcinoma). The high false-positive rate (29% of proven benign breast disease) limits the use of 99mTcO4 as an aid to differential diagnosis. Some of the recent trends in the detection of breast lesions, in particular carcinoma, are reviewed. The value, indications, accuracy and limitations of mammography are outlined. Malignant calcifications and their localisation for surgery, specimen radiography, cysts of the breast, duct discharge and the problem of juvenile breast lumps are discussed. The possible hazards from radiation should not be deterrent in any examination with a specific clinical problem. The position may have to be reviewed if extensive use is made of mannography in screening well women.

The results of examination of 79 patients of whom 25 were thyroid cancer patients, showed that electroroentgenothyrolymphoscans made it possible to judge with a sufficient degree of significance of the size, site and function of the intrathyroid lymph nodes of which some were "hidden" because of their small size on routine scans. This method can be successfully used for differential diagnosis of different thyroid diseases including tumors alongside with other morphological methods.

Patients with primary carcinoma of the base of the tongue or direct invasion from contiguous areas were examined clinically and with ultrasound, and in some cases with computed tomography (CT), xerography, and polytomography. In all cases, multiple biopsy specimens were obtained. Utrasonography was better than the other imaging methods in delineating disease extent in the tongue itself, while CT and tomography were more useful in evaluating the retropharyngeal and lateral pharyngeal regions. It is suggested that ultrasound be used in the initial evaluation of such patients.
