Xerostomia, or dry mouth, is a significant problem affecting quality of life in patients treated with radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. Strategies for reduction of xerostomia burden vary widely, with options including: sialagogue medications, saliva substitutes, acupuncture, vitamins, hyperbaric oxygen, submandibular gland transfer, and acupuncture or associated treatments. In this review, we sought to evaluate long-term outcomes of patients treated with various interventions for radiation-induced xerostomia. A literature search was performed using the terms "xerostomia" and "radiati

INTRODUCTION: A significant proportion of patients with fibromyalgia (FM) complain of dry eyes and mouth. Many Sjögren's syndrome (SS) patients also complain of FM symptoms, and there is literature that suggests that there is interplay between these two disorders. Recently, the presence of novel tissue specific autoantibodies (TSAs), SP-1, CA6, and PSP, has been observed in the early stages of SS. These early markers present themselves before the classic autoantibodies, such as SS-A/Ro, SS-B/La, ANA, and RF.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the relationship between SS and FM by testing p

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to clarify the species of Candida that are important for the development of atrophic glossitis in xerostomia patients.
METHODS: A total of 231 patients with subjective dry mouth were enrolled in the present study. Logistic regression analysis was performed to clarify the contribution of each Candida species and other variables to the development of atrophic glossitis. The dependent variable was the absence/presence of atrophic glossitis. The Candida colony-forming units (CFU) of C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, and C. krusei, as well as age, g

Xerostomia is a common complaint of nearly half of the elderly population and about one-fifth of younger adults. It causes several signs and symptoms, and compromise oral functions and health-related quality-of-life. Multiple reasons are proposed to describe the etiology of xerostomia such as local factors, psychogenic factors, and systemic diseases. In order to manage xerostomia effectively, identification of the main causality is mandatory. The aim of this review was to present systemic diseases leading to xerostomia with their mechanisms of action. We used various general search engines and

OBJECTIVES: Pain in the orofacial region is frequently reported by patients in dental and medical offices. Facial pain, headache, masticatory abnormalities and other complaints often become chronic and may be associated with local disturbances, such as xerostomia and teeth abnormalities. The objective of this study was to investigate salivary flow and xerostomia in patients with orofacial pain.
DESIGN: This was a case-control study; we evaluated 82 patients with chronic orofacial pain compared with 56 healthy subjects using a Clinical Pain Questionnaire (pain characteristics, duration, intens

The purpose of this study was to prepare a protein solution to simulate natural saliva using mucin extracted from bovine submaxillary gland. The extraction process was done in keeping with Drans & Leung's (1980) modified technique. Once the bovine submaxillary gland was extracted (approximately 500 g), it is cut and stored in distilled water for 12 hrs at 4 degrees C in order to eliminate any tissue or blood remaining in the section. The tissue is then homogenized and suspended in a phosphate buffer solution with a pH of 7 for 48 hours. The solution is then centrifuged and the supernatant is t

BACKGROUND: The severity of xerostomia often does not correlate with objective salivary flow rates. Moreover, the influence of concomitant oral burning pain and/or dysesthesia on xerostomia is not well understood.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of oral burning pain and/or dysesthesia on the severity of xerostomia.
METHODS: This retrospective study analysed 396 patients with a chief complaint of dry mouth. Patients were divided into those with xerostomia alone (n = 146) and those with concomitant oral burning pain and/or dysesthesia (n = 250). Data were collected through comprehensiv

This in vivo study aimed to assess the prevalence of xerostomia and quantify salivary flow in users of complete dentures (CDs) as well as examine correlations between these factors and patients' adaptation to new conventional CDs. In this study, 40 individuals responded to a questionnaire assessing the presence of xerostomia and underwent sialometry tests to determine salivary flow and the predominant type of saliva. Salivary flow was assessed during 2 distinct evaluation periods under both unstimulated and stimulated conditions. The initial evaluation period began immediately after the placem

Chronic kidney disease affects 10-15% of the global population, with hemodialysis causing significant thirst and xerostomia due to fluid restrictions. These symptoms impair quality of life and treatment adherence. While ultrafiltration (UF) and sodium profiling have been studied separately, their combined effect remains understudied, particularly in Middle Eastern populations. We conducted a randomized crossover trial with 20 ESRD patients comparing: (1) ascending/descending UF with linear sodium reduction (150→138 mmol/L) versus (2) conventional HD with constant UF/sodium (140 mmol/L). Partic

Xerostomia is a widespread condition among the elderly, impacting as many as 50% of individuals within this demographic. This review aims to analyze the association between age-related xerostomia and the oral microbial ecosystem. Xerostomia not only induces discomfort but also heightens the susceptibility to oral diseases, including dental caries and infections. The oral microbial ecosystem, characterized by a dynamic equilibrium of microorganisms, is integral to the maintenance of oral health. Dysbiosis, defined as a microbial imbalance, can further aggravate oral health complications in thos

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Xerostomia, caused by radiation-induced parotid damage, is the most commonly reported radiotherapy (RT) complication for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the value of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) MR in monitoring radiation-induced parotid gland damage and predicting the risk of xerostomia.
METHODS: Fifty-four NPC patients were enrolled and underwent at least three IVIM MR scans: before (pre-RT), after 5 fractions of (5th-RT), halfway through (mid-RT), and after RT (post-RT). The degree of xerostomia patients was assessed

PURPOSE: Haemodialysis is the most popular procedure of treating end-stage renal disease. But patients on haemodialysis report various symptoms including xerostomia that add to the physical as well as the psychological stress. Xerostomia is also considered to be one of the factors for interdialytic weight gain. This systematic review aims to find out the prevalence of xerostomia in patients on haemodialysis. The results would help the nephrologists to consider xerostomia, treat it appropriately and minimise the risks during haemodialysis.
METHODS: The search strategy was in line with the PRIS
