Photosynthesis induction varies along the canopies of Zea mays and Sorghum bicolor: linking fast responses and non-photochemical quenching relaxation to biomass production.

Light variability throughout the canopy requires sophisticated control for the induction of photosynthesis and deactivation of photoprotective mechanisms, which could optimize CO2 assimilation and crop yield. This study aimed to investigate the genotypic variation in photosynthesis induction and the relaxation of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) across the canopy of five Zea mays and Sorghum bicolor cultivars. CO2 uptake, stomatal conductance, and NPQ dynamics were recorded every 60 s during photosynthetic induction. Initially, leaves at the top, middle and bottom canopy positions were dark-a

Insights in to iron-based nanoparticles (hematite and magnetite) improving the maize growth (Zea mays L.) and iron nutrition with low environmental impacts.

The possible potential application of Fe-NPs on Fe nutrition, heavy metals uptake and soil microbial community needs to be investigated. In the current research, a pot experiment was used to examine the implications of Fe-NPs (α-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) on maize growth, Fe uptake and transportation, soil microbial community, and environmental risk. Fe3O4, α-Fe2O3, FeSO4 at a rate of 800 mg Fe kg-1 were applied in soils with four replications under a completely randomized design for a period of 60 days. Results showed that Fe uptake by maize roots were increased by 107-132% than control, with obvious v

Synergistic effect of antioxidant system and osmolyte in hydrogen sulfide and salicylic acid crosstalk-induced heat tolerance in maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings.

Salicylic acid (SA), is a plant hormone with multifunction that is involved in plant growth, development and the acquisition of stress tolerance. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is emerging similar functions, but crosstalk between SA and H2S in the acquisition of heat tolerance is not clear. Our recent study firstly reported that SA treatment enhanced the activity of L-cysteine desulfhydrase (L-DES), a key enzyme in H2S biosynthesis, followed by induced endogenous H2S accumulation, which in turn improved the heat tolerance of maize seedlings. (1) In addition, NaHS, a H2S donor, enhanced SA-induced heat

Early transcriptome analyses of Z-3-Hexenol-treated zea mays revealed distinct transcriptional networks and anti-herbivore defense potential of green leaf volatiles.

Green leaf volatiles (GLV), which are rapidly emitted by plants in response to insect herbivore damage, are now established as volatile defense signals. Receiving plants utilize these molecules to prime their defenses and respond faster and stronger when actually attacked. To further characterize the biological activity of these compounds we performed a microarray analysis of global gene expression. The focus of this project was to identify early transcriptional events elicited by Z-3-hexenol (Z-3-HOL) as our model GLV in maize (Zea mays) seedlings. The microarray results confirmed previous st

Cold-gelation-related functionality of hot-air-popped flours from pigmented popcorn (Zea mays var. 'Everta'), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), and amaranth (Amaranthus sp.).

Hot-air popping promotes grain matrix reorganization and may enhance cold-gelation functionality in grain flours. This study evaluated the structural, techno-functional, and rheological properties of pigmented popcorn, sorghum, and amaranth flours after hot-air popping using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, pasting analysis, and rheology. Popping increased β-sheet (56%) in purple popcorn and reduced crystalline order (2.4% and 0%) in red sorghum and amaranth, respectively. Microscopy revealed expanded porous structures. These modificatio

Maize silk-based biostimulant seed priming enhances salt resilience and productivity in Zea mays by upregulating antioxidant defenses and targeted ion-transport genes.

Biostimulant-rich plant extracts offer a sustainable agricultural strategy to mitigate plant stress. Two-year field experiments (2024-2025) evaluated maize seed priming with maize silk extract (MSE) at 5%, 10%, and 15% (based on dry weight) under normal (NC, ECe=1.48 dS m⁻¹) and saline (SC, ECe=8.90 dS m⁻¹) conditions. SC significantly impaired photosynthesis, leaf integrity, and nutritional balance, ultimately reducing plant growth and grain yield. These detrimental effects were driven by elevated oxidative stress (superoxide and H2O2) and cellular damage (electrolyte leakage and malondialdeh

Effects of ascorbic acid and salicylic acid on drought resilience and mitigation of lead and cadmium toxicity in dryland maize (Zea mays L.).

Drought and heavy metal (HM) contamination severely constrain maize productivity in dryland agriculture. While ascorbic acid (AA) and salicylic acid (SA) are recognized as protective agents against abiotic stress, their comparative efficacy and synergistic potential under combined stress remain poorly understood. This study evaluated individual and combined applications of AA (100 mg·L-1, equivalent to 0.57 mM) and SA (0.5 mM) on maize ('Zhengdan No. 16') subjected to four water regimes: well-watered (WW 100%), mild water stress (MWS 75%), moderate water stress (MoWS, 50%), and severe water st

Use of Humic Acids, Zeolite and Bentonite to Mitigate Iron Toxicity and Improve Growth Parameters and Chemical Composition in Maize (Zea mays L.).

Soil contamination with metals is a significant environmental problem that can adversely affect the growth of crops and the quality of yields. Among potentially toxic elements, iron plays a particularly important role, as excessive amounts of it disrupt physiological processes and plant nutrition. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of varying levels of iron contamination in the soil and the effectiveness of selected neutralising substances in mitigating iron stress on the growth, mass, SPAD index and chemical composition of maize biomass. In the absence of additives, excessive iron

Signaling Molecule Hydrogen Sulfide Improves Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Maize (Zea mays L.) Under High Temperature by Inducing Antioxidant System and Osmolyte Biosynthesis.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a novel type signaling molecule in plants. Seed germination is a key stage of life cycle of plants, which is vulnerable to environmental stress including high temperature. However, under high temperature stress, whether pre-soaking of maize seeds with NaHS (a H2S donor) could improve seed germination and seedling growth and the possible mechanisms are not completely clear. In this study, maize seeds pre-soaked with NaHS enhanced germination percentage, sprout length, root length, and fresh weight compared with the control without NaHS treatment, illustrating that H2S
