Utilizing thermal imaging drones to investigate sleeping site selection in an arboreal primate.

Sleeping site selection is essential for understanding primate behavioral ecology and survival. Identifying where species sleep helps determine priority areas and critical resources for targeted conservation efforts. However, observing sleeping sites at night is challenging, especially for species sensitive to human disturbance. Thermal infrared imaging (TIR) with drones is increasingly used for detecting and counting primates, yet it has not been utilized to investigate ecological strategies. This study investigates the sleeping site selection of the Critically Endangered black-shanked douc l

New Miocene litoptern remains from Colombia and ecological structure of American Neogene herbivore guilds.

BACKGROUND: The Middle Miocene fauna of La Venta, Colombia, offers a grand opportunity to understand low-latitude South American ecosystems prior to the late Cenozoic Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). We present new material of two proterotheriid litopterns, Villarroelia totoyoi and Mesolicaphrium sanalfonense, and a macraucheniid litoptern, Theosodon, from La Venta. During the GABI, North and South American faunas intermixed, after which some lineages proliferated and others died out. We conducted an ecomorphological analysis of 11 North and South American faunas pre-dating and post-d

Tropical cyclone activity predicts autumn vagrancy of Nearctic birds on a remote North Atlantic island.

Wind drift has long been invoked as a primary driver of the seasonal appearance in Europe of long-distance migrants from North America (‘Nearctic vagrants’), presumed to be displaced beyond their normal range by westerly crosswinds and tropical storms encountered during migration. Yet few studies have tested how tropical cyclone (TC) activity shapes long-term patterns in offshore vagrancy. I assembled a 20-year autumn time series (2005–2024) from the small oceanic island of Corvo (Azores, Portugal) and used generalized linear models (GLMs) to relate fluctuations in Nearctic vagrancy to meteoro

Big-Hearted Invaders: The Impacts of Range Expansion and Parasite Infection on Heart Mass in Cane Toads.

The invasion of cane toads (Rhinella marina) across tropical Australia has resulted in the rapid evolution of traits that enable higher rates of dispersal, and that adapt toads to hot dry climates. In anurans, a larger heart facilitates both locomotor activity and desiccation tolerance. Heart size is also often affected, either directly or indirectly, by parasite infections. To test the effects of invasion history and parasite exposure on heart size, we studied common garden-reared toads whose parents were sourced from diverse locations, and experimentally exposed them to larvae of a nematode

Cariprazine modulates affective and social behaviors through ventral striatal islands of Calleja neurons.

Cariprazine, a dopamine D2/D3 receptor partial agonist with high affinity for D3 receptors, is effective in treating bipolar disorder and depression; however, the precise neural mechanisms underlying its actions remain incompletely understood. This study investigates how cariprazine modulates affective and social behaviors through D3 neurons in the olfactory tubercle (OT). Local infusion of cariprazine specifically into the OT, but not the nucleus accumbens (NAc) or hippocampus, induced anxiety-like behaviors, impaired struggling behaviors in depression-related tests, and increased huddling be

Hypoxia Promotes Gluconeogenesis Through PGC-1α in the Liver of Lasiopodomys brandtii.

Oxygen is a critical factor for the survival of most lifeforms, as inadequate availability disrupts internal metabolic balance. Hypoxia-induced disruptions in glucose metabolism can be fatal to many animals. However, there is currently limited research on the energy metabolism of species that inhabit environments with intermittently low oxygen levels. In this study, we investigated the gluconeogenic metabolic response patterns of adult Lasiopodomys brandtii (Brandt's vole) and Mus musculus (Kunming mice) under hypoxia (10% O2, 12 h), followed by 1 h reoxygenation period. Our results indicated

Friends or Foes? The Indispensable Role of Gut Microbiota in Plant-Fungus-Herbivore Interactions.

Plants interact complexly with herbivores and diverse microbial communities, both plant-associated and insect-associated. A recent study investigated how the endophytic fungus Trichoderma, colonizing tomato plants, affects the herbivore Spodoptera littoralis. The study revealed that Trichoderma-enhanced plant resistance significantly reduced larval performance by profoundly changing the insect's gut microbial community composition. This work demonstrates that the effects of plant fungal colonization on insect herbivores are critically mediated by the insect's gut microbiota, highlighting a key

Nest-founding paper wasps aggregate in "social leks" and decrease aggression during partner selection.

Many animals live in cooperative social groups. The success of social animals is thought to be influenced by both an animal's own characteristics and by the characteristics of its social partners. As a result, some social animals may devote substantial time and energy to assessing potential partners. Here, we study the process of social group formation in Polistes fuscatus paper wasps. Prior to founding nests, wasps engage in extended social partner sampling where they synchronously "shop" for co-foundresses. We quantify wasp behavior during partner sampling using day censuses and recording ag

Phenotypic plasticity in an extended phenotype: the cobweb spider Campanicola campanulata alters web architecture in response to variation in prey availability.

Phenotypic plasticity in extended phenotypes has been proposed as a mechanism by which animals modify their phenotypes in response to changing environmental conditions. This phenomenon is exemplified by certain spiders that construct bell-shaped cobwebs using sand grains, soil particles, prey remains, and plant debris. The retreat and gumfooted lines in these cobwebs are believed to serve defensive and foraging functions. This study aimed to test both the phenotypic plasticity and the tradeoff hypotheses by examining whether the common cobweb spider Campanicola campanulata alters web architect

Severe Hearing Loss in the World's First Successfully Captive-Born Yangtze Finless Porpoise: Impact of High Underwater Sound Exposure and Congenital Hearing Disorders.

Aquariums globally have seen significant growth in recent decades. However, persistent negligence exists concerning underwater sound pollution in aquariums and its impact on cetaceans. Here, the audiogram of Taotao, the world's first successfully captive-born and bred Yangtze finless porpoise, and the underwater sound levels in the Baiji Aquarium at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences were examined. In contrast to the previously published U-shaped audiograms of the Yangtze finless porpoise, Taotao's audiogram exhibited a W-shaped pattern. Additionally, the audiogram of T

Extreme spatial confinement and high site fidelity in a crevice-dwelling lizard with a minimal home range.

BACKGROUND: Body size has traditionally been regarded as a key predictor of home-range extent. However, it remains unclear whether habitat specialisation can alter the expected allometric relationship between body size and home range. Crevice-dwelling lizards of the genus Xenosaurus provide an excellent system for addressing this question due to their extremely restricted habitat use. Using Bayesian generalised linear models-which allow explicit comparison of alternative hypotheses-we focused on (I) characterising the spatial behaviour of X. platyceps, (II) testing whether the home range of X.

Size-dependent effects of the intestinal microbiota in juvenile Chinese alligators: implications for species protection.

Increasing the quality of offspring to optimize population reproductive efficiency represents a viable approach for increasing population size. The population of Chinese alligators has a growing age structure, but the high mortality rate of juveniles is a serious problem that needs to be solved. We investigated the relationship between the weight of juvenile Chinese alligators and the microbiota to improve the survival rate and provide better protection for Chinese alligators. The results revealed significant differences in body weight among the selected individuals. Among the 35 most abundant

DNA metabarcoding analysis of the North China and Amur Leopards' feeding habits.

Leopards Panthera pardus are top predators that play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem balance and stability by exerting top-down control on prey species populations through direct predation. Despite their wide distribution, in recent years leopard populations have become endangered in many regions due to increasing anthropogenic activity. Studying the feeding habits of endangered species provides insight into their survival from the perspective of their trophic niche and can help identify factors contributing to their decline, aiding in the development of targeted conservation strategie

Impact of dam-induced hydrological fluctuations on the behavior of the endangered scaly-sided Merganser (Mergus squamatus): implications for river regulation strategies and conservation.

Since the mid-20th century, the global expansion of dam and reservoir construction has profoundly altered river ecosystems, with cascading effects on channel morphology, flow regimes, and freshwater biodiversity. Among these impacts, the disruption of natural flow variability remains a critical but under-analyzed factor, particularly regarding its influence on riparian waterbirds. To address this gap, we investigated the behavioral responses of the endangered Scaly-sided Merganser (Mergus squamatus), a wintering diving duck, to dam-induced hydrological fluctuations downstream of the Taoyuan Da

Whole-genome resequencing reveals chromosomal fusion-driven early stages of XY chromosomes evolution in the darkbarbel catfish (Tachysurus vachellii).

This study investigates the early stages of putative sex chromosome evolution in the darkbarbel catfish (Tachysurus vachellii) through whole-genome resequencing of 31 individuals. We identified the sex-determining region (SDR) on chromosome 3 (chr3), with an FST value of 0.5, indicating the presence of relatively putative young XY sex chromosomes. Our analyses revealed significant genetic differentiation between male and female groups, suggesting that these young sex chromosomes contribute to observed genetic divergence. Notably, among SDR, pseudoautosomal region (PAR), and autosomes, PAR exhi

Modeling Skin Mark Temporal Variations to Estimate the Sex of Delphinids with Low Sexual Dimorphism: Implications for Management and Conservation.

Sex ratio is an important population metric in animal conservation, but its study in marine species with low sexual dimorphism is often challenging. This work aimed to apply the principles of skin mark analysis to a cetacean species to test its ability to identify sex differences in markings and build a sex-discrimination model exclusively based on photographic material. The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was chosen as the model species, and skin marks and their progression over time were identified and measured across the whole-body surface of individuals on photographs acquir

Offensive and Defensive Exploitation of Ants by Termitophagous Spiders (Araneae: Zodariidae).

Myrmecophagy is one of the most common types of dietary specialization among predators. It can include exploitation of ants, termites, or both. Although ants and termites share a few traits, they are distantly related and possess different defensive mechanisms. Therefore, adaptations to ants and termites should differ, especially in arthropod predators of similar body size as their prey. We investigate offensive and defensive adaptations in Zodariidae spider genus Diores, reported to feed on termites. The ancestral state reconstruction of the diet favored termitophagy for the genus, but metaba

Volumetric Comparison of Overall Brain and Neuropil Size Between Social and Non-social Spiders: Exploring the Social Brain Hypothesis.

The social brain hypothesis predicts that the relative size of specific brain regions is driven by the cognitive capacity required to manage complex (social) situations. Spiders are intriguing models to test this hypothesis, as sociality is rare in this usually solitary and aggressive group. Here, we used microCT to compare the central nervous system and brain volumes between social and solitary females of the species in two taxonomic groups, huntsman and crab spiders. Overall, we found no difference in relative CNS and brain volume between social and solitary species. However, social huntsman

Tracking domestication signals across populations of North American raccoons (Procyon lotor) via citizen science-driven image repositories.

North American raccoons are widespread across the contiguous United States and live in close proximity to humans (i.e. urban) and in rural environments. This makes them an excellent species for comparative work on the effects of human environments on phenotypic traits. We use raccoons as a mammalian model system to test whether exposure to human environments triggers a trait of the domestication syndrome. Our data suggests that urban environments produce reductions in snout length, which are consistent with the domestication syndrome phenotype. These results are crucial for the discussion of t

The curious case of stomach diverticula in Epiphanes clavulata (Rotifera: Monogononta).

Rotifers are aquatic micrometazoans with a variety of feeding styles and dietary preferences. The morphology of their digestive tracts is well known, but there are few details on the structure of any organs. Here we use transmission electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy to investigate the stomach of Epiphanes clavulata, which is unusual in its possession of 6 diverticula that are absent in other taxa. We focus on this region to determine whether these diverticula are exocrine and potentially homologous to gastric glands, which are the main digestive organs of rotifers, but absent in
