Seasonal environmental forcing masks thermal discharge effects on plankton communities in a subtropical coastal bay.

Coastal ecosystems adjacent to nuclear power plants may be subject to thermal disturbance; however, the relative importance of seasonal environmental forcing and localized anthropogenic disturbance in shaping plankton community assembly remains poorly understood. In this study, we integrated seasonal environmental monitoring with concurrent surveys of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and nektonic organisms across 24 stations in Daya Bay, southern China, to quantitatively assess the relative influences of seasonal forcing, spatial structure, and potential multi-trophic interactions on plankton commu

Elevated Magnesium Concentrations Altered Freshwater Assemblage Structures in a Mesocosm Experiment.

Magnesium (Mg) is a mining-related contaminant in the Alligators Rivers Region of tropical northern Australia. A mesocosm experiment was used to assess Mg toxicity to aquatic freshwater assemblages. Twenty-five 2700-L tubs were arranged, stratified randomly, on the bed of Magela Creek, a seasonally flowing, sandy stream channel in the Alligator Rivers Region of northern Australia. The experiment comprised 5 replicates of 4 nominal Mg treatments, 2.5, 7.5, 23, and 68 mg L-1 , and a control. Phytoplankton biomass, and diatom, zooplankton, and macroinvertebrate assemblages present in the treatmen

Trans generational effects of the neurotoxin BMAA on the aquatic grazer Daphnia magna.

β-N-Methylamino-l-alanine (BMAA) is a neurotoxin that is suspected to play a role in the neurological diseases amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. BMAA has been detected in phytoplankton and globally, the main exposure routes for humans to BMAA are through direct contact with phytoplankton-infested waters and consumption of BMAA-contaminated fish and invertebrates. As BMAA can be transferred from mothers to offspring in mammals, BMAA exposure is expected to have transgenerational effects. The aim of our study was to determine whether maternal exposure to

Mercury and other trace elements in a pelagic Arctic marine food web (Northwater Polynya, Baffin Bay).

Total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and 22 other trace elements were measured in ice algae, three species of zooplankton, mixed zooplankton samples, Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida), ringed seals (Phoca hispida) and eight species of seabirds to examine the trophodynamics of these metals in an Arctic marine food web. All samples were collected in 1998 in the Northwater Polynya (NOW) located between Ellesmere Island and Greenland in Baffin Bay. THg and MeHg were found to biomagnify through the NOW food web, based on significant positive relationships between log THg and log MeHg concentration

Mercury speciation in plankton from the Cabo Frio Bay, SE--Brazil.

Mercury (Hg) is considered a global pollutant, and the scientific community has shown great concern about its toxicity as it may affect the biota of entire systems, through bioaccumulation and bioamplification processes of its organic form, methylmercury (MeHg), along food web. However, few research studies deal with bioaccumulation of Hg from marine primary producers and the first-order consumers. So, this study aims to determine Hg distribution and concentration levels in phytoplankton and zooplankton in the Cabo Frio Bay, Brazil, a site influenced by coastal upwelling. The results from Hg s

Methylmercury bioaccumulation in water flea Daphnia carinata by AIEgen.

Mercury ion (Hg2+) is a toxic heavy metal ion and Hg2+ is convertible to methylmercury (MeHg) by many aquatic microorganisms, leading to bioaccumulation and biomagnification in aquatic organisms, which can interfere with brain development and function in humans. This study employs a newly developed AIEgen (Aggregation-induced emission fluorogen) to quantify and visualise the process of MeHg bioaccumulation in vivo on the species of water flea Daphnia carinata. Two approaches to MeHg absorption were taken, either by direct incubation in a MeHg solution or by indirect consumption of algae contam

Does ecological release from distantly related species affect phenotypic divergence in brook charr?

Ecological opportunity occurs when a resource becomes available through a decrease of interspecific competition and another species colonizes the vacant niche through phenotypic plasticity and intraspecific competition. Brook charr exhibit a resource polymorphism in some Canadian Shield lakes, where a littoral ecotype feeds mainly on zoobenthos and a pelagic ecotype feeds mostly on zooplankton. The objectives of this study were to test that (i) resource polymorphism is common in these brook charr populations, (ii) the presence creek chub and white sucker, two introduced species competing with

Biodiversity enhances pond ecosystem multifunctionality across Europe.

Small water bodies, such as ponds, are crucial for biodiversity and support multiple ecosystem functions (multifunctionality). Yet, the extent to which their biodiversity contributes to multifunctionality remains largely unexplored. Here we report data from a large-scale, highly standardized, stratified field survey across 206 European ponds, including 2,500 observations of biodiversity (macrophytes, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates and amphibians) and key ecosystem functions and processes, including methane emissions, litter decomposition, carbon sequestration, primary productivity, biomass ac

Microplastics ingestion in the ephyra stage of Aurelia sp. triggers acute and behavioral responses.

For the first time, we report a correspondence between microplastics (MP) ingestion and ecotoxicological effects in gelatinous zooplankton (Cnidarian jellyfish). The ephyra stage of the jellyfish Aurelia sp. was exposed to both environmental and high concentrations of fluorescent 1-4 μm polyethylene MP (0.01-10 mg/L). After 24 and 48 h, MP accumulation, acute (Immobility) and behavioral (Frequency pulsation) endpoints were investigated. MP were detected by confocal and tomographic investigations on gelatinous body and mouth, either attached on the surface or ingested. This interaction was resp

Export of mercury downstream from reservoirs.

Environmental effects monitoring at the La Grande hydroelectric complex (Québec, Canada) revealed important increases in mercury levels in fish caught downstream from reservoirs. A study was carried out in 1997 immediately below the Caniapiscau Reservoir to identify by which components mercury is transported downstream from reservoirs and to assess the amount of mercury being exported. Stomach contents of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) captured immediately below the Caniapiscau Reservoir were examined to determine which components transfer mercury from lower trophic levels to fish. The effects of diluted bitumen, the shoreline washing agent Corexit EC9580A, and bio-stimulation on the lower food web of a boreal lake.

Small scale oil spills and secondary clean up methods were implemented in shoreline enclosures within the littoral zone of a boreal lake to examine impacts on lower trophic organism (periphyton, phytoplankton and zooplankton) communities. Treatment enclosures received 1.5 L (1300 g) of weathered diluted bitumen on June 21st, 2019, followed four days later by primary recovery (i.e. freshwater flushing and absorbent recovery of floating oil) and then either the shoreline washing agent (SWA) Corexit EC9580A or enhanced monitored natural recovery (eMNR) with a slow-release nutrient fertilizer. Projected impacts of 21st century climate change on diapause in Calanus finmarchicus.

Diapause plays a key role in the life cycle of high latitude zooplankton. During diapause, animals avoid starving in winter by living in deep waters where metabolism is lower and met by lipid reserves. Global warming is therefore expected to shorten the maximum potential diapause duration by increasing metabolic rates and by reducing body size and lipid reserves. This will alter the phenology of zooplankton, impact higher trophic levels and disrupt biological carbon pumps. Here, we project the impacts of climate change on the key North Atlantic copepod Calanus finmarchicus under IPCC RCP 8.5.

Effects of experimental thermocline and oxycline deepening on methylmercury bioaccumulation in a Canadian shield lake.

Environmental disturbances like deforestation or climate change may influence lake thermal and oxic stratification, thereby modifying cycles of contaminants such as mercury (Hg). In a lake naturally separated into three basins, the thermocline and oxycline of an experimental basin were deepened by 4 and 3 m, respectively, to study the effect on the methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation. This treatment decreased hypolimnetic MeHg concentration by approximately 90%, zooplankton concentrations by 30 to 50%, and in some fish by 45%. A multiple linear regression indicated that oxycline depth significan

Environmental factors mediate mercury exposure in fish with diverse feeding habits in the Beibu Gulf.

Tropical and subtropical oceans, including the Beibu Gulf, a key fishing area in China, receive a substantial share of global mercury (Hg) deposition, yet the exposure levels and influencing factors in marine organisms remain underexplored. This study analyzed total and methylated Hg (THg and MeHg) concentrations in 650 fish from 10 species across 24 sites in the eastern Beibu Gulf in April and August 2022, along with concurrent surface water parameter measurements. The significant variations in fish Hg content across species were primarily driven by feeding habits, with benthic feeders exhibi

Spatiotemporal distribution of lipophilic shellfish toxins in plankton and shellfish in the offshore regions of Shandong province, China.

Lipophilic shellfish toxins (LSTs) threaten the ecosystem health and seafood safety. To comprehensively investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of common LSTs in phytoplankton, zooplankton and economic shellfish, three cruises were conducted in five typical offshore aquaculture regions of Shandong province, China, including Haizhou Bay, Jiaozhou Bay, Sanggou Bay, Sishili Bay and Laizhou Bay, in spring (March-April), summer (July-August) and autumn (November-December). This study revealed significant variability in the composition and content of LSTs in phytoplankton samples collected from

Methylmercury biomagnification in an Arctic pelagic food web.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic element that enters the biosphere from natural and anthropogenic sources, and emitted gaseous Hg enters the Arctic from lower latitudes by long-range transport. In aquatic systems, anoxic conditions favor the bacterial transformation of inorganic Hg to methylmercury (MeHg), which has a greater potential for bioaccumulation than inorganic Hg and is the most toxic form of Hg. The main objective of the present study was to quantify the biomagnification of MeHg in a marine pelagic food web, comprising species of zooplankton, fish, and seabirds, from the Kongsfjorden system

Short-term responses of estuarine mesozooplankton to maintenance dredging activities.

Maintenance dredging is a common practice in estuaries to ensure navigability and support port operations, but it also represents a widespread anthropogenic disturbance. Its effects on planktonic communities, however, remain poorly understood, particularly for mesozooplankton, a key component linking primary producers and higher trophic levels. This study evaluated the short-term responses of mesozooplankton communities and environmental variables to a maintenance dredging operation in the Guadalquivir estuary (SW Spain). Sampling was conducted at two sites with contrasting salinity conditions

Ecosystem consequences of cyanobacteria in the northern Baltic Sea.

Cyanobacteria of the Baltic Sea have multiple effects on organisms that influence the food chain dynamics on several trophic levels. Cyanobacteria contain several bioactive compounds, such as alkaloids, peptides, and lipopolysaccharides. A group of nonribosomally produced oligopeptides, namely microcystins and nodularin, are tumor promoters and cause oxidative stress in the affected cells. Zooplankton graze on cyanobacteria, and when ingested, the hepatotoxins (nodularin) decrease the egg production of, for example, copepods. However, the observed effects are very variable, because many crusta

Changes in prey selection and fitness of non-native Erythroculter erythropterus following estuarine restoration in the Nakdong River, South Korea.

Estuarine ecosystems globally are being restored through re-naturalization efforts, including the Nakdong River Estuary (NRE) in South Korea, which partially re-opened in 2019 after decades of disconnection. We investigated how this restoration affected the feeding ecology and fitness of Erythroculter erythropterus (Skygager), a non-native cyprinid that became dominant in the upper NRE following barrage construction. We surveyed fish populations, analyzed stomach contents using Next Generation Sequencing, and assessed morphological changes from May 2018 to June 2022. Following NRE opening, zoo

Transformation of mercury at the bottom of the Arctic food web: an overlooked puzzle in the mercury exposure narrative.

We show 2008 seasonal trends of total and monomethyl mercury (THg and MeHg, respectively) in herbivorous (Calanus hyperboreus) and predatory (Chaetognaths, Paraeuchaeta glacialis, and Themisto abyssorum) zooplankton species from the Canadian High Arctic (Amundsen Gulf and the Canadian Beaufort Sea) in relation to ambient seawater and diet. It has recently been postulated that the Arctic marine environment may be exceptionally vulnerable to toxic MeHg contamination through postdepositional processes leading to mercury transformation and methylation. Here, we show that C. hyperboreus plays a hit
