Salivary alpha-amylase as a biomarker for obstructive sleep apnea severity and continuous positive airway pressure adherence: A cluster-based phenotyping approach.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by repetitive apneic events leading to sympathetic nervous system activation. Salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) is a non-invasive biomarker reflecting sympathetic activity; however, its clinical relevance in OSA remains underexplored. METHODS: This prospective, observational study included 177 adults with suspected OSA who underwent overnight polysomnography and pre-sleep sAA activity measurement. Nasal obstruction was assessed subjectively and objectively. Cluster analysis was performed using sAA activity, the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI),

Effect of sympathetic denervation of the pineal gland on maternal co-ordination of the circadian rhythm of alpha-amylase in parotid gland from young rats.

Twenty-five-day-old rats maintained in constant darkness since birth and born from mothers kept in the dark since the 14th day of pregnancy showed a circadian rhythm of alpha-amylase content in parotid glands, which may be explained by a mechanism of maternal co-ordination. Rats in the same conditions, except that their mothers had been submitted to bilateral excision of the superior cervical ganglia 30 days before mating, did not show diurnal variations of alpha-amylase activity in the parotid glands. When ganglionectomized mothers were treated with a daily dose of melatonin (1 mg/kg) from th

[Trypsin and alpha-amylase activity in the pancreas of guinea pigs. V. Effects of administration of vitamin A and B 2 during the larval stage of ascariasis].

The infection of guinea pigs with Ascaris suum larvae resulted in decrease of the activities of trypsin and alpha-amylase, and in increase of lipase activity in extracts from their pancreas. The activity of alpha-amylase, lipase and the relative weight of lungs of infected animals which were given vitamin A, did not differ from control animals. The activity of trypsin from pancreas these animals was higher than that measured in only infected guinea pigs but it was lower than in control animals. Application of vitamin B2 and the infection of guinea pigs with A. suum did not lead to the synonymo

Identification of genomic loci and candidate genes underlying preharvest sprouting-induced alpha-amylase activity in barley through genome-wide association study.

Alpha-Amylase activity is the primary underlying factor for starch degradation and therefore yield and quality losses induced by preharvest sprouting (PHS) in barley. The present study identified genomic regions/candidate causal genes associated with PHS-induced α-amylase (AMY) activity through genome-wide association study (GWAS) of highly diverse barley genotypes over four environments. The genotypes studied exhibited a wide variation in Rapid Visco Analysis (RVA) results, which served as indicators of differing AMY activity levels. Marker-trait association analysis detected six markers sign

Evidence for a modulating effect of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) on salivary alpha-amylase as indirect noradrenergic marker: A pooled mega-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has received tremendous attention as a potential neuromodulator of cognitive and affective functions, which likely exerts its effects via activation of the locus coeruleus-noradrenaline (LC-NA) system. Reliable effects of taVNS on markers of LC-NA system activity, however, have not been demonstrated yet. METHODS: The aim of the present study was to overcome previous limitations by pooling raw data from a large sample of ten taVNS studies (371 healthy participants) that collected salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) as a

Inhibitory control and stress biomarkers in response to social media stimuli: a Go/No-Go study using heart rate variability, alpha-amylase and oxytocin.

Problematic social media use is increasingly recognized as a heterogeneous phenomenon; yet the cognitive and psychophysiological mechanisms underlying distinct user profiles remain poorly understood. This study examines the relationship between cognitive control, stress regulation, and the psychophysiological response to social media stimuli using a multidimensional approach. Using a three-phase protocol (baseline, task, and recovery), inhibitory control was assessed alongside objective biomarkers-heart rate variability (SDNN), salivary alpha-amylase (sAA), and salivary oxytocin-across three d

Host-Guest Mechanism via Induced Fit Fullerene Complexation in Porphin Receptor to Probe Salivary Alpha-Amylase in Dental Caries for Clinical Applications.

Salivary α-amylase is the most abundant protein of human saliva that potentially binds to streptococcus and other bacteria via specific surface-exposed α-amylase-binding proteins and plays a significant role in caries development. The detection of α-amylase in saliva can be used as a bioindicator of caries development. Herein, a facile strategy has been applied, tailoring the photochemical properties of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-21H,23H-porphine (TPPOH) and the fullerene C60 complex. The fluorescence emission of TPPOH is quenched by starch-coated fullerene C60 via charge-transfer ef
