Although antibodies against West Nile virus (WNV) have been detected in the sera of dromedaries in the Middle East, North Africa and Spain, no WNV has been isolated or amplified from dromedary or Bactrian camels. In this study, WNV was isolated from Vero cells inoculated with both nasal swab and pooled trachea/lung samples from a dromedary calf in Dubai. Complete-genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis using the near-whole-genome polyprotein revealed that the virus belonged to lineage 1a. There was no clustering of the present WNV with other WNVs isolated in other parts of the Middle East.

We report a rare case of purulent pericarditis with cardiac tamponade due to Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W135 in a 15-year-old pilgrim returning from the Hajj. Initial suspicion of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was prompted by pneumonia and camel milk exposure, misdirecting the diagnosis. The patient developed cardiac tamponade requiring urgent pericardiocentesis; 16S rRNA PCR confirmed N. meningitidis W135 despite negative cultures. He recovered fully with ceftriaxone and colchicine. This case highlights diagnostic anchoring bias in travel medicine and the need

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in farm environments can be transferred to humans through the food chain and occupational exposure. Enterococcus infections caused by linezolid resistant enterococci (LRE) are becoming more challenging to treat as their resistance to antibiotics intensifies. Therefore, this study investigated the molecular epidemiology, phenotypic and genomic characterization of enterococci in seven species of farm animals (sheep, chicken, swine, camel, cattle, equine, pigeon) anal swab from Xinjiang, China by agar dilution method, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), whole-genom

BACKGROUND: We implemented a longitudinal study to determine the incidence of Brucella infection in cattle, camels, sheep and goats that were being raised in a pastoral area in Isiolo County, Kenya. An initial cross-sectional survey was implemented to identify unexposed animals for follow up; that survey used 141 camels, 216 cattle, 208 sheep and 161 goats. Sera from these animals were screened for Brucella spp. using the Rose Bengal Plate test (RBPT), a modified RBPT, and an indirect multispecies Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (iELISA). Results of RBPT and iELISA were interpreted in parall

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection causes significant economic losses to the cattle industry worldwide and still represents a huge pressure on agricultural production. Thus, the development of novel anti-BVDV strategies are urgently needed. The nonstructural protein 5 (NS5B) of BVDV is essential for viral replication. Further, the camel single-domain antibody (nanobody) represents a promising antiviral approach with the advantages of small size, stable structure, high specificity and solubility, and the recognition of specific epitopes. However, no NS5B-specific nanobodies against BV

This study was conducted over one year in the major North Jeddah abattoir to assess the current status of hydatidosis among slaughtered animals. The cysts count size, site of infection and fertility were conducted on randomly infected animals. A total of (91348) slaughtered animals; camels (541), cattle (615), goats (48370) and sheep (41822) were macroscopically and microscopically examined. The infection prevalence was 6.86%, 3.63%, 69.6% & 19.85% in camels, cattle, sheep and goats respectively. The liver was the predominant site of infection in all animals. The intensity of cysts differed si

Screening of inhibitory Ab1 antibodies is a critical step for producing catalytic antibodies in the anti-idiotypic approach. However, the incompatible surface of the active site of the enzyme and the antigen-binding site of heterotetrameric conventional antibodies become the limiting step. Because camelid-derived nanobodies possess the potential to preferentially bind to the active site of enzymes due to their small size and long CDR3, we have developed a novel approach to produce antibodies with alliinase activities by exploiting the molecular mimicry of camel nanobodies. By screening the cam

This paper describes the development and validation of an inhibition ELISA based on gamma-irradiated tissue culture-derived antigen for the detection of antibody to Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) in humans, domestic and wild ruminants. Validation data sets derived from field-collected sera in Africa (humans=1367, cattle=649, goats=806, sheep=493, buffalo=258, camels=156) were categorized according to the results of a virus neutralisation test. In addition, individual sera from 93 laboratory workers immunized with inactivated RVF vaccine, 136 serial bleeds from eight sheep experimentally infect

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a serious public health concern, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) continues to limit treatment options. This laboratory-based comparative study evaluated antibiotic resistance patterns and nanoparticle (NP) susceptibility among 110 S. aureus isolates recovered from human skin and soft tissue infections (n = 80) and camel milk (n = 30). Proteomic identification utilizing matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was carried out for all isolates under study. Cannabidiol (CBD) suffers from poor aqueous solubility and extensive first-pass metabolism, which significantly limits its oral bioavailability. In our earlier work, we developed camel milk-derived exosomes (CMDE) as nanocarriers to enhance CBD bioavailability, confirmed through in vivo pharmacokinetic evaluations. In this study, we further characterized the formulation by performing an in silico physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) simulation using GastroPlus™, integrating in vitro dissolution data. The simulation demonstrated that CBD absorption improved markedly with exosomal encaps

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are a serious threat to humans, wildlife and livestock, and cause severe economic losses in many tropical drylands. The effective control of TBDs has been constrained by limited understanding of what determines tick loads in animals. We tested interactive effects of several biological factors (sex, age and body condition), one environmental factor (rainfall) and one human factor (management type) on tick loads in animals.
METHODS: We collected ticks on animals at four sampling sites in the semi-arid savanna area of Laikipia County, Kenya, of which two ar

Rift Valley Fever virus (RVFV) causes recurrent outbreaks of acute life-threatening human and livestock illness in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. No licensed vaccines are currently available for humans and those widely used in livestock have major safety concerns. A 'One Health' vaccine development approach, in which the same vaccine is co-developed for multiple susceptible species, is an attractive strategy for RVFV. Here, we utilized a replication-deficient chimpanzee adenovirus vaccine platform with an established human and livestock safety profile, ChAdOx1, to develop a vaccine for use

BACKGROUND: Scientific evidence suggests that dromedary camels are the intermediary host for the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). However, the actual number of infections in people who have had contact with camels is unknown and most index patients cannot recall any such contact. We aimed to do a nationwide serosurvey in Saudi Arabia to establish the prevalence of MERS-CoV antibodies, both in the general population and in populations of individuals who have maximum exposure to camels.
METHODS: In the cross-sectional serosurvey, we tested human serum samples obtained fr

BACKGROUND: The species/genotypes of Echinococcus infecting a range of intermediate, canid and human hosts were examined as well as the intraspecific variation and population structure of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) within these hosts.
METHODS: A total of 174 Echinococcus isolates from humans and ungulate intermediate hosts and adult tapeworms from dogs and jackals were used. Genomic DNA was used to amplify a fragment within a mitochondrial gene and a nuclear gene, coding for cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1; 828 bp) and elongation factor 1-alpha (ef1a; 656 bp), respectively

In this study, 112 Echinococcus granulosus isolates from different livestock of Iran were genotyped by PCR amplification of ribosomal DNA-internal transcribed spacer 1 (rDNA-ITS1) region followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) with the enzyme RsaI. The possibility of intra-genotype variation was also investigated using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Isolates from sheep, goats, cattle and the majority of camels (12 of 18; 66.7%) were identified as the G1 genotype and a few camel isolates (6 of 18; 33.3%) belonged to the G6 genotype. Overall G1 and G6 gen
