Discriminative-stimulus effects of clozapine in squirrel monkeys: comparison with conventional and novel antipsychotic drugs.

The effects of conventional and novel atypical antipsychotic drugs were compared to clozapine in squirrel monkeys that discriminated I.M. injections of clozapine (1.0 mg/kg) from saline in a two-lever drug discrimination procedure. Clozapine (0.03-3.0 mg/kg) produced dose-related increases in responding on the clozapine-associated lever with full substitution at the training dose in all monkeys. Dose-related increases in responding on the clozapine-associated lever and full substitution also were observed with structural analogues of clozapine including perlapine and fluperlapine (0.1-3.0 mg/k

Assessing Body Image in Multiple Sclerosis: Adaptation and Validation of the Modified Body Image Scale.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is frequently associated with physical, cognitive, and emotional changes, including functional loss, which may significantly affect body image (BI) perception. However, a BI questionnaire specifically adapted for use with people with MS (PwMS) is currently lacking. This study aims to adapt and validate the original Italian version of the Body Image Scale (BIS) for the MS population and to examine its psychometric properties. METHODS: A three-phase adaptation process was conducted, involving a panel of MS experts and PwMS to ensure coherence with MS clinical

Epigenetic memory and allostatic integrity: a theoretical integration of the hierarchical-circular model using a longitudinal methylation signature of dementia.

INTRODUCTION: The Hierarchical-Circular Model of Biological Memory (HCM) proposes that dementia results from disrupted circular information flow across five levels: genetic, epigenetic, allostatic, PNEI network, and interoceptive. Allostatic integrity-the adaptive capacity for circular flow-determines whether pathology translates into dementia. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a recently published blood DNA methylation signature for incident dementia is consistent with the predictions of the HCM. METHODS: We systematically mapped Zhang et al.'s findings (44 CpGs, 44 DMRs, pathway enrichments,

Development and Validation of the Food Consumption Rate Questionnaire (FCRQ): A Behaviorally Informed Measure of Eating-Rate Regulation.

Background: Eating-rate regulation is a multidimensional behavioral process shaped by oral-processing dynamics, interoceptive cues, sensory engagement, and contextual influences. Despite its relevance, no validated self-report instrument currently assesses these mechanisms. Methods: The Food Consumption Rate Questionnaire (FCRQ) was developed as a behaviorally informed tool for measuring eating-rate regulation. Item generation followed a theory-driven process supported by expert review, forward-backward translation, and pilot testing. Structural validity was examined through Exploratory Factor

Attentional effects on affect and prefrontal activation during high-intensity exercise with music.

Music is widely used in exercise as a dissociative strategy to divert attention from sensations of fatigue. During high-intensity exercise, however, physiological perceptions may dominate attention, making it difficult for external stimuli like music to capture focus. Two experiments examined the impact of directing attention to music or body movements while running with asynchronous music. In Experiment 1, a within-subjects 2 (intensity: 70% or 80% heart rate reserve) x 2 (focus: music-focus or body-focus) design was employed. Focusing on music resulted in higher affective valence and remembe

Precision dynamics of predictive coding in functional neurological disorder.

Functional neurological disorder (FND) presents disabling symptoms that fluctuate, migrate across systems, and yet routinely show preserved structural integrity-features that can frustrate diagnosis and patient education. Crucially, these symptoms are genuine and reflect altered brain regulation across multiple systems rather than tissue damage or conscious control. This paper offers a clinically usable account of these puzzles by reframing FND as a disorder of precision control within predictive coding. The brain's confidence (precision) in its own predictions is modelled as a dynamic quantit

Many labels, shared threat processes: classifying domain-labelled anxieties by mechanism rather than context.

Psychology has accumulated numerous 'X-anxieties'-math, test, foreign-language, public-speaking, driving, health, and others-each with its own scale and specialist literature. Yet these experiences often share a phenomenological core of anticipatory worry, bodily arousal, catastrophic simulation, and avoidance. This review considers whether many such labels index context-bound expressions of common threat-regulation processes rather than independent mechanisms. A mechanism-first account is developed from experience to process to biological implementation: threat appraisal under uncertainty, in

Nucleus of the solitary tract regulation of cue-induced appetitive behaviors via midbrain dopamine neurons.

Internal states including stress and satiety, affect cue-induced feeding behaviors, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. The nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), a key hindbrain hub that integrates interoceptive and viscerosensory signals and projects to reward processing nuclei, is anatomically well-positioned to modulate cue-induced feeding behaviors in response to internal state changes. Using behavioral paradigms combined with chemogenetics and fibre photometry, this study investigated the hypothesis that NTS mediates the effects of stress and satiety on cue-induc

Postural stability and muscle co-activation among younger adults adapting to an immersive virtual reality.

Immersive visual environment can deceive our interoceptive perception of how we move relative to our environment. If the visual environment or a high reliance on vision produces straining work conditions, motion sickness or is associated with a medical disorder, the causes merit addressing. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether postural control adapts to challenging visual environments from VR by adjusting postural stability and muscle co-contractions responses and investigate associations between stability measures and postural muscle co-contractions during VR-stimul

Latent profile analysis of uncertainty in illness and eating self-efficacy in patients with gastric cancer and its associated factors: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with gastric cancer frequently experience substantial psychological burden throughout diagnosis and treatment. Uncertainty in illness and eating self-efficacy are two key determinants of psychological adjustment and rehabilitation. However, prior research has predominantly relied on variable-centered approaches, with limited attention to within-population heterogeneity and its correlates among patients with gastric cancer. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify latent profiles of uncertainty in illness and eating self-efficacy among patients with gastric cancer and to ex

The carotid body in sepsis: From homeostatic defense to immunometabolic dysregulation.

Sepsis is a life-threatening syndrome caused by a dysregulated host response to infection and involves failure of immune, metabolic, respiratory, cardiovascular, thermal, endocrine, and autonomic regulation. In this review, we propose that the carotid body may act as a peripheral interoceptive checkpoint in the transition from adaptive host defense to immunometabolic decompensation. The discussion is organized around four interconnected dimensions. First, we examine inflammatory and metabolic signals that may be detected by the carotid body during sepsis, including cytokines, lactate, glucose,

GLP-1 at the Metabolic-Cognitive Interface: Reward, Affect, and Memory.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a nutrient-responsive hormone classically associated with glucose homeostasis and food intake control, yet its receptor is broadly expressed throughout the central nervous system (CNS) in circuits governing complex cognitive processes. Here, we synthesize emerging evidence from preclinical models and human studies demonstrating that GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) signaling modulates multiple cognitive domains, including reward and motivational processes relevant to obesity and substance use disorder, affective-related behaviors, and learning and memory. We propose a

Dissecting emotional and cardiac contributions to duration perception: Evidence from two EEG experiments.

Time perception is inherently malleable, influenced by both emotional and bodily states. Past research suggests that transient heartbeat-linked interoceptive signals can modulate time perception, with some studies reporting that brief stimuli presented during cardiac systole are perceived as shorter than those during diastole. Here, we used electroencephalography (EEG) across two experiments to examine how such cardiac-phase effects are neurally instantiated, and how they interact with emotional content of the stimuli. In Experiment 1, participants judged the duration of brief neutral visual s

Resting-State Neural Signatures of Moral Injury: Associations With Rumination.

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI) is a condition that may emerge following a violation of an individual's moral code. MI leads to significant functional impairment in many trauma-exposed civilians, with rumination proposed as a mechanism of action. Little is known about the neuropathophysiology of different MI dimensions, including MI related to transgressions caused by the self or others. We examined links between facets of MI, resting-state amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), and rumination in trauma-exposed civilians. METHODS: Sixty adults (ages 18-56 years; 51 female) completed me

Electroencephalographic Resting-State Microstates are Unstable in Visual Snow Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To study large-scale network processing in visual snow syndrome (VSS) with and without migraine, we applied resting-state electroencephalographic microstate analysis. BACKGROUND: VSS is characterized by a spectrum of visual symptoms, with the main symptom being perceived as flickering dots throughout the visual field. The syndrome is associated with migraine and tinnitus and is considered a network disorder, but the cause and pathophysiology are still largely unknown. METHODS: In this case-control study, resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) recordings were selected from a co

Validating genuine changes in heartbeat-evoked potentials using pseudotrials and surrogate procedures.

The brain continuously receives interoceptive information about the state and function of our internal organs. For instance, each time the heart beats, the brain responds by generating time-locked activity, known as heartbeat-evoked potentials (HEP). When investigating HEPs, it is essential to adequately control for heartbeat-independent confounding activity to avoid false interpretations. In the present study, we highlight the pitfalls of uncontrolled analyses and advocate for the use of surrogate heartbeat analysis and pseudotrial correction, which are promising tools to control for spurious

Pre-reflective and reflective abnormalities in cortical midline structures in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND & HYPOTHESIS: Self-disorders (SDs), central features of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, primarily affect the pre-reflective sense of self, the fundamental experience of existing as a conscious subject. This disruption also impacts reflective self-consciousness. This study aims to further explore the neural correlates of self-disorders in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders by using a cognitive task designed to target approximate pre-reflective and reflective self-experience during fMRI. STUDY DESIGN: 27 individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (patients, PT

A Physiotherapy-Based Dance Exercise Intervention Can Improve Body Awareness and Reduce Pain Perception But Does Not Affect Kinesiophobia in Women with Fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia impacts physical and mental health, affecting movement and body awareness. Non-pharmacological treatments like physiotherapy-based dance exercise intervention (PBDEI) may improve symptoms. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of PBDEI as a non-pharmacological intervention for chronic pain, focusing on improving body awareness and reducing pain perception in patients with chronic conditions. METHODS: The study involved five women with fibromyalgia aged between 20 and 40 years, all with chronic pain in different body areas (e.g., back, head, right hemibody). P

Body-oriented therapies for the treatment of eating disorders: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: People with eating disorders often experience disturbances of body experience across the domains of cognition, affect and perception. Some body-oriented therapies (BOT) - body-oriented psychological therapies (BOPT) and holistic body-oriented therapies (HBOT) - aim to improve mind-body connection and body experience and help people feel differently about managing their eating behaviours. This review aimed to identify and describe these BOT for eating disorders, investigate their effects and explore patients' experiences. METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA gu
