International consensus on the most useful assessments used by physical therapists to evaluate patients with temporomandibular disorders: A Delphi study.

OBJECTIVE: To identify assessment tools used to evaluate patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) considered to be clinically most useful by a panel of international experts in TMD physical therapy (PT). METHODS: A Delphi survey method administered to a panel of international experts in TMD PT was conducted over three rounds from October 2017 to June 2018. The initial contact was made by email. Participation was voluntary. An e-survey, according to the Checklist for Reporting Results of Internet E-Surveys (CHERRIES), was posted using SurveyMonkey for each round. Percentages of response

Management of chronic pain in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: Two case reports and a review of literature.

RATIONALE: Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDSs) are a heterogeneous group of heritable connective tissue disorders involving defective collagen synthesis. Patients with EDS are prone for chronic myofascial pain, apart from other comorbidities. Although the initial pathology is commonly nociceptive, progression of EDS leads to neuropathies and central sensitization of pain signals. Overall, approximately 90% or more EDS patients suffer from chronic pain. There are no existing guidelines to manage chronic pain in EDS patients. In this article, we illustrate 2 case reports of EDS patients with chronic

Specific autonomy recovery programme in a comprehensive rehabilitation on functionality and respiratory parameters in oncological patients with dyspnoea. Study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Survival in cancer patients has increased exponentially in recent years, with multiple side effects caused by treatments. Cancer-related asthenia and dyspnea are among them, which represent a serious health problem, with considerable limitations and reduced quality of life. An implementation of the conventional clinical practice, developed through physical exercise, may be useful in controlling dyspnoea. This study aims to compare the effects of a comprehensive rehabilitation implementing a programme of multimodal physical exercise with a specific autonomy recovery programme, versu

Lumbar range of motion in chronic low back pain is predicted by task-specific, but not by general measures of pain-related fear.

BACKGROUND: Most studies fail to show an association between higher levels of pain-related fear and protective movement behaviour in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). This may be explained by the fact that only general measures of pain-related fear have been used to examine the association with movement patterns. This study explored whether task-specific, instead of general measures of pain-related fear can predict movement behaviour. METHODS: Fifty-five patients with CLBP and 54 healthy persons performed a lifting task while kinematic measurements were obtained to assess lumbar ran

Postural Stability in Osteoarthritis of the Knee and Hip: Analysis of Association With Pain Catastrophizing and Fear-Avoidance Beliefs.

BACKGROUND: Persons with knee osteoarthritis (OA) are at risk of having sensations of instability and sometimes experience buckling. The instability has been associated with psychosocial dysfunction, such as fear of movement, and impaired physical functioning. A high degree of fear of movement is positively correlated with avoidance in other conditions. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between postural stability, the degree of pain catastrophizing, and fear-avoidance beliefs in subjects with knee and hip OA. DESIGN: Descriptive, cross-sectional study. SETTING: Four primary health car

Multifactorial approach training for anterior shoulder instability after a Latarjet procedure: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The Latarjet procedure is the mainstay treatment in high-demand patients with substantial glenoid bone loss or after failed capsulolabral repairs. Patients typically return to sport (RTS) within 6 months postoperatively, requiring intensive rehabilitation. Current rehabilitation protocols focus on mobility, strength and stability. Yet, psychological factors, such as fear of reinjury, are the main reason not to RTS. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether integrating psychological interventions into postoperative rehabilitation improves patient-reported shoulder function c

Effectiveness of non-surgical management in rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy (the effect trial): protocol for a randomised clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy (RCCT) involves calcific deposits in the rotator cuff. Non-surgical interventions such as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) and ultrasound-guided percutaneous irrigation of calcific tendinopathy (US-PICT) are recommended for its early management. Exercise therapy (ET) has shown to be an effective intervention for people with rotator cuff tendinopathy, but it has not been formally tested in RCCT. The main objective of this study is to compare the effectiveness of an ET programme with ESWT and US-PICT in people with RCCT. As a secondary aim,

The Effect of Surgical Decompression and Fusion on Functional Balance in Patients With Degenerative Lumbar Spondylolisthesis.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effect of lumbar decompression and fusion surgery on balance and stability in patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) and compare them to controls. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: DLS is a condition in which one vertebra subluxates relative to an adjacent vertebra in the absence of a disruption in the neural arch. While the existing literature demonstrates that decompression and fusion can successfully alleviate pain and reduce disability in patients with DLS, no studies to date have used quantitative dynamic te

The recovery after Achilles tendon rupture: a protocol for a multicenter prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) is a common sports injury, with a rising incidence and significant impairments. Due to the lack of treatment guidelines, there is no consensus about diagnostic methods, primary treatment (non-surgical or surgical) and rehabilitation. It is hypothesized that this lack of consensus and guidelines leads to sub-optimal recovery and higher societal costs. The primary aim of this study is to give a broad insight into the recovery after ATR. Secondarily this study aims to explore factors contributing to recovery and gain insight into the cost-effectiveness of

Assessing the impact of manual therapy in the management of nonspecific low back pain: a scoping review of the outcomes used in clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Low Back Pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide, 90% of which is nonspecific. Manual therapy is one of the recommended treatment modalities. However, reported outcomes may be variable. This review aims to identify their scope in the context of the development of a Core Outcome Set (COS), which is defined as « an agreed standardised set of outcomes that should be measured and reported, as a minimum, in all clinical trials in specific areas of health or health care ». METHODS: A scoping review with risk of bias assessment of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of ma

Effects of combining manual therapy, neck muscle exercises, and therapeutic pain neuroscience education in patients with migraine: a study protocol for a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-pharmacological approaches for the management of migraine exhibit low to moderate effectiveness due to a lack of high-quality randomized clinical trials. In fact, previous studies applied isolated techniques, which were not representative of common clinical practice. A multimodal approach for migraine may benefit these patients more than isolated approaches. This randomized clinical trial aims to determine the effectiveness of a multimodal protocol combining manual therapy, exercise, and therapeutic pain neuroscience education versus the application of manual therapy or pain ne

Predictors of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms after musculoskeletal trauma.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are common following musculoskeletal trauma and are associated with poorer recovery, disability, and reduced quality of life. Although psychosocial and injury-related factors have been linked to PTSS, limited research has examined longitudinal predictors or the relationship between injury severity and PTSS progression in people hospitalised for musculoskeletal trauma. OBJECTIVES: To identify predictors of PTSS at three and six months following musculoskeletal trauma and hospitalisation, and to examine the relationship between injury severity a

Comparative efficacy of different mind-body exercises on functional capacity and quality of life in patients with chronic heart failure: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Mind-body exercise (MBE) has emerged as a vital adjunctive modality in the rehabilitation of chronic heart failure (CHF). However, the relative advantages of various MBE types in improving functional capacity and quality of life (QoL) remain elusively defined. This study aimed to compare the therapeutic efficacy of different MBEs on clinical outcomes in CHF patients using a network meta-analysis (NMA). METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials (RCTs)

Contralateral Balance Training Improves Postural Control and Functional Recovery After Arthroscopic Anterior Talofibular Ligament Repair: A Prospective, Randomized, Single-Blind Trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) affects approximately 40% of patients within 1 year after a first-time acute lateral ankle sprain. While arthroscopic anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) repair is preferred when conservative treatment fails, early postoperative balance training is limited by weight-bearing restrictions. Cross-education, which transfers training benefits from one limb to the contralateral untrained limb, has demonstrated efficacy in improving postural control under conservative care; however, its postoperative utility remains poorly understood. This study investigat
