Attitudes of healthcare providers towards non-initiation and withdrawal of neonatal resuscitation for preterm infants in Mongolia.

Antenatal parental counselling by healthcare providers is recommended to inform parents and assist with decision-making before the birth of a child with anticipated poor prognosis. In the setting of a low-income country, like Mongolia, attitudes of healthcare providers towards resuscitation of high-risk newborns are unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of healthcare providers regarding ethical decisions pertaining to non-initiation and withdrawal of neonatal resuscitation in Mongolia. A questionnaire on attitudes towards decision-making for non-initiation and withdra

Limits of viability: definition of the gray zone.

INTRODUCTION: As survival and long-term morbidity of very preterm infants have improved over the past decade, the limits of infant viability, the level of maturity below which survival and/or acceptable neurodevelopmental outcome are extremely unlikely, have also decreased. STUDY DESIGN: In an effort to define the current limits of infant viability, the data in the literature on survival and long-term neurodevelopmental outcome in very preterm neonates have been reviewed. RESULT: The gestational age and birth weight below which infants are too immature to survive, and thus provision of inten

Population-based study of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in very low birth weight infants in Switzerland.

UNLABELLED: In Switzerland, data are collected prospectively by collaborators from all nine neonatal intensive care units and their affiliated paediatric units caring for neonates, to determine survival and (pulmonary) outcome of infants with birth weights ranging from 501 to 1500 g. To assess the pulmonary outcome of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants in Switzerland in 1996 and 2000, factors associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) were identified and compared with pulmonary outcomes from the Vermont Oxford Network data. BPD was defined as a requirement for supplemental oxygen at 36

Towards a Belgian consensus for prevention of perinatal group B streptococcal disease.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: In Belgium, as in many other countries, group B Streptococcus (GBS) is still the leading cause of sepsis and meningitis in neonates. In 2001, though no Belgian guidelines for their prevention were available, in some hospitals, obstetrical programmes included a GBS prevention policy. With an aim to reach a Belgian consensus for the prevention of perinatal group B streptococcal disease, a national consensum meeting was organized in 2001. We report here our experience and findings of this meeting. METHODS: In November 2001, obstetricians, neonatologists, microbiologists

Rates of perinatal mortality and low birth weight among 3367 consecutive births in south of Beirut.

3367 consecutive births were reviewed prospectively. Population belongs mainly to a community with relatively underprivileged living conditions. Perinatal mortality was found at a rate of 22.4/1000 B. Early neonatal mortality formed 6.66/1000 B and stillbirth formed 15.83/1000 B. Low birth weight rate was 5.43% of live birth. Analysis of our findings suggests the need to improve follow-up during gestation to avoid complications resulting in macerated stillbirths, and to review the routine of follow-up and care in the immediate period before delivery, during delivery, in the immediate post part

The relationship of the subtypes of preterm birth with retinopathy of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Retinopathy of prematurity is an adverse outcome of preterm birth and is a leading cause of childhood blindness. The relationship between the subtypes of preterm birth with retinopathy of prematurity is understudied. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether there is a difference in the incidence of type 1 or type 2 retinopathy of prematurity in infants with preterm birth resulting from spontaneous preterm labor, a medical indication of preterm birth, or preterm premature rupture of the membranes. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of 827 infants screened for retino

One Size Does Not Fit All: Comparing CDH Team Structure Across Children's Hospitals in the United States of America.

BACKGROUND: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a complex anomaly with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Successful management depends on interprofessional and multidisciplinary collaboration. Multiple previous publications have underscored the effect that center-specific factors can have on CDH outcomes. However, beyond institutional differences, optimal outcomes also rely on a well-composed team with both surgical and critical care expertise. Understanding the center effect requires identifying key drivers, with team structure being a major factor. While surgeons and neonatologists

Surgical management of intraventricular hemorrhage and posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus in premature infants - single center experience.

INTRODUCTION: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a severe complication of prematurity, often leading to posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH). While advances in neonatal care have reduced the incidence of IVH, managing progressive PHH remains challenging. Surgical interventions are crucial for reducing intracranial pressure and preventing long-term neurodevelopmental deficits. This study presents our single-center experience in the surgical management of IVH and PHH in premature infants, highlighting outcomes associated with different surgical strategies. METHODS: This retrospective study was

Neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy and therapeutic hypothermia: prognostic value of intra-axial haemorrhage.

UNLABELLED: Establishing an accurate prognosis for newborns with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) undergoing therapeutic hypothermia (TH) remains a challenge. The effect of intra-axial haemorrhage (IAH) detected on early brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is poorly explored. The objectives were to assess the impact of IAH and MRI results on neurodevelopment at 18-36 months of age. Observational study of newborns with HIE admitted to a tertiary paediatric intensive care unit submitted to TH. MRI results were classified using the Weeke score, and the presence of IAH was recorded. The o

Risk factors for the time to development of retinopathy of prematurity in premature infants in Iran: a machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), is a preventable leading cause of blindness in infants and is a condition in which the immature retina experiences abnormal blood vessel growth. The development of ROP is multifactorial; nevertheless, the risk factors are controversial. This study aimed to identify risk factors of time to development of ROP in Iran. METHODS: This historical cohort study utilized data from the hospital records of all newborns referred to the ROP department of Farabi Hospital (from 2017 to 2021) and the NICU records of infants referred from Mahdieh Hospital to Farab

Reforming early intervention for premature infants: insights into integrated nursing and medical care in Western China.

BACKGROUND: Premature births has imposed substantial burdens on medical resources. Consequently, a specialized team was established and a model focused on early intervention, namely the Delivery Room Intensive Care Unit (DICU) emphasizing "care, support, and treatment" was introduced and its impact on the morbidity and mortality outcomes of newborns was assessed. Additionally, we aimed to develop a nomogram model for predicting the risk of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm infants. METHODS: A retrospective study involving 2,788 infants was conducted to compare the characteristics a
