[Role of gastropods in epidemiology of human parasitic diseases].

Pulmonate and prosobranch snails, being necessary hosts for parthenogenetic generations of digenetic trematodes, participate in transmission of all trematodoses important from medical point of view. Role of particular gastropods in epidemiology of these diseases is discussed in details. Invasion of land snails and slugs is mainly passive by eggs containing developed miracidia, while enter of these larvae into snails inhabiting fresh-water environments is usually active. Generations in the snail host between miracidia and cercariae vary considerable, depending upon the fluke species. Generally,

A basic serine protease from Paecilomyces lilacinus with biological activity against Meloidogyne hapla eggs.

Scanning electron micrographs of the nematode-egg-parasitic fungus Paecilomyces lilacinus infecting eggs of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne spp. suggested the involvement of lytic enzymes. When grown on a liquid mineral salts medium, supplemented with different substrates as the sole N- and C-source, the fungus produced an extracellular protease. Colloidal chitin, vitellin and intact eggs of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne hapla induced proteolytic activity that was repressed by glucose. The protease was partially purified from the culture filtrate by affinity chromatography. It has a mo

Mutation of a degS homologue in Enterobacter cloacae decreases colonization and biological control of damping-off on cucumber.

We have been using mutagenesis to determine how biocontrol bacteria such as Enterobacter cloacae 501R3 deal with complex nutritional environments found in association with plants. E. cloacae C10, a mutant of 501R3 with a transposon insertion in degS, was diminished in growth on synthetic cucumber root exudate (SRE), colonization of cucumber seed and roots, and control of damping-off of cucumber caused by Pythium ultimum. DegS, a periplasmic serine protease in the closely related bacterium Escherichia coli K12, is required for the RpoE-mediated stress response. C10 containing wild-type degS fro

Life history traits of Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on non-Bt and Bt transgenic corn hybrids in eastern North Carolina.

Transgenic varieties of field corn that express the CrylAb B. thuringiensis (Bt) toxin in ear tissue present the potential of reducing ear feeding by the corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and for reducing the size of populations of the insect infesting other host crops. Life history parameters of H. zea feeding on ears of conventional and Bt field corn varieties were measured in field plots in eastern North Carolina in 1997 and 1998. Transformation events investigated were Mon-810 and Bt-11. Bt corn was found to cause a steady mortality of larvae during development, but p

Effect of temperature on life table parameters of the predatory soil mite Blattisocius mali (Acari: Blattisociidae) fed on Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Acari: Acaridae).

Temperature impacts the development, survival, and fecundity of edaphic predatory mites. This study examined the biological and life table parameters of the edaphic predatory mite Blattisocius mali (Oudemans) (Acari: Blattisociidae) feeding on Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) (Acari: Acaridae) at four different temperatures, 15 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C, and 30 °C. The developmental period, reproductive period, and adult longevity of B. mali shortened with rising temperature. The lower temperature threshold and thermal constant ranged between 13.02 and 13.73 °C, and 83.36-89.04 oD, respectively. Mate

Effect of Wolbachia Infection and Adult Food on the Sexual Signaling of Males of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly Ceratitis capitata.

Sexual signaling is a fundamental component of sexual behavior of Ceratitis capitata that highly determines males' mating success. Nutritional status and age are dominant factors known to affect males' signaling performance and define the female decision to accept a male as a sexual partner. Wolbachia pipientis, a widespread endosymbiotic bacterium of insects and other arthropods, exerts several biological effects on its hosts. However, the effects of Wolbachia infection on the sexual behavior of medfly and the interaction between Wolbachia infection and adult food remain unexplored. This stud

Chemical Defense of Yacón (Smallanthus sonchifolius) Leaves against Phytophagous Insects: Insect Antifeedants from Yacón Leaf Trichomes.

Yacón is a perennial crop with high insect resistance. Its leaves have many glandular trichomes, which may be related to pest resistance. In order to collect the constituents of glandular trichomes, leaves were rinsed using dichloromethane (DCM) to obtain the rinsate, and the plant residues were subsequently extracted by DCM to obtain a DCM extract containing the internal constituents of yacón leaves. Biologic evaluations revealed that insect antifeedant activity was stronger for the rinsate than for the DCM extract against the common cutworm. The major constituents of rinsate were isolated by

Toxic Effects of Couroupita guianensis Against Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Laboratory experiments were conducted to find out the efficacy of different crude extracts and fractions of Couroupita guianensis (Lecythidaceae) against Spodoptera litura (Fabricius). Results revealed that hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of C. guianensis showed larvicidal and pupicidal activities against S. litura. Maximum larvicidal activity (68.66%) was observed in hexane extract at 5.0% concentration followed by chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts, and least LC50 value of 2.64% was observed in hexane extract. A 100% pupicidal activity was observed in hexane extract. Based o

Sodium fluoroacetate (1080): assessment of occupational exposures and selection of a provisional biological exposure index.

AIM: Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) is used for control of vertebrate pests in New Zealand. Little is known about chronic effects in humans, but animal studies demonstrate potential for adverse fetal, male fertility, and cardiac effects. We aimed to employ analyses of 1080 to help assess the degree of exposure of bait formulators and distributors, and identify specific tasks where exposure reduction appeared most indicated. We also aimed to utilise the (limited) 1080 toxicity data to assess the significance of the analytical results. METHOD: Exposures during various activities were assessed by m

Host-specific pathogenicity of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora in Galleria mellonella and Plodia interpunctella larvae.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are useful as biological agents for the control of insect pests and disease vectors. They are also important for understanding nematode pathogenicity and host anti-nematode response. The pathogenic properties of EPNs towards insects are attributed to effector molecules, which are produced by both the nematodes and their symbiotic bacteria during infection. Here, we hypothesized that the contribution of the mutualistic bacterium Photorhabdus luminescens to the virulence of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora is host-dependent. To test this hypothesis, we compared the

Development of RNAi in a Drosophila endoparasitoid wasp and demonstration of its efficiency in impairing venom protein production.

Endoparasitoid wasps are essential regulators of insect pests in ecosystems as well as important biological control auxiliaries. Traits important for parasitism success, such as the injection of venom proteins at oviposition, have thus been mainly studied. However, identification of the key genes involved among the large number of genes identified was still prevented by the lack of functional approaches. Here, we report the development of RNA interference (RNAi) in Leptopilina boulardi, a figitid endoparasitoid that performs its entire development inside the Drosophila host. Having set up cond

Polyandrous Mexican Fruit Flies: Second Male Paternity and Biological Attributes of Transgenic Strains.

Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a damaging agricultural pest. Currently, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is used as part of its control. The SIT consists of the mass-rearing, sterilization, and release of insects in target areas. Sterile males mate with wild females, and prevent them from laying fertile eggs. However, even if females mate with sterile males, they can then remate with a second male. If this second male is wild, then this could reduce the efficiency of the SIT by producing viable offspring. The amount of progeny produced by second males (P2 values) for A. ludens

Warfarin-exposed zebrafish embryos resembles human warfarin embryopathy in a dose and developmental-time dependent manner - From molecular mechanisms to environmental concerns.

Warfarin is the most worldwide used anticoagulant drug and rodenticide. Since it crosses placental barrier it can induce warfarin embryopathy (WE), a fetal mortality in neonates characterized by skeletal deformities in addition to brain hemorrhages. Although the effects of warfarin exposure in aquatic off target species were already described, the particular molecular toxicological mechanisms during early development are still unclear. Here, we used zebrafish (Danio rerio) to describe and compare the developmental effects of warfarin exposure (0, 15.13, 75.68 and 378.43 mM) on two distinct ear

A partly stage-structured model for the abundance of salmon lice in salmonid farms.

The parasitic salmon louse constrains growth in the Norwegian salmon farming industry through density dependent host-parasite interaction. Hence, there is a need for insight into how increases in salmon production, varying spatial organisation of the production and pest control strategies affect salmon louse population dynamics. Here we present a new salmon louse model for exploring effects of varying salmon farming conditions on spatio-temporal abundances of the parasite. The salmon louse model is partly stage-structured, comprising of (i) adult female lice and (ii) other mobile stages of lic

Pathogen survival in the external environment and the evolution of virulence.

Recent studies have provided evolutionary explanations for much of the variation in mortality among human infectious diseases. One gap in this knowledge concerns respiratory tract pathogens transmitted from person to person by direct contact or through environmental contamination. The sit-and-wait hypothesis predicts that virulence should be positively correlated with durability in the external environment because high durability reduces the dependence of transmission on host mobility. Reviewing the epidemiological and medical literature, we confirm this prediction for respiratory tract pathog

Wolbachia infection in Argentinean populations of Anastrepha fraterculus sp1: preliminary evidence of sex ratio distortion by one of two strains.

BACKGROUND: Wolbachia, one of the most abundant taxa of intracellular Alphaproteobacteria, is widespread among arthropods and filarial nematodes. The presence of these maternally inherited bacteria is associated with modifications of host fitness, including a variety of reproductive abnormalities, such as cytoplasmic incompatibility, thelytokous parthenogenesis, host feminization and male-killing. Wolbachia has attracted much interest for its role in biological, ecological and evolutionary processes as well as for its potential use in novel and environmentally-friendly strategies for the contr

Bacteriophages for prophylaxis and therapy in cattle, poultry and pigs.

The successful use of virulent (lytic) bacteriophages (phages) in preventing and treating neonatal enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infections in calves, lambs and pigs has prompted investigation of other applications of phage therapy in food animals. While results have been very variable, some indicate that phage therapy is potentially useful in virulent Salmonella and E. coli infections in chickens, calves and pigs, and in control of the food-borne pathogens Salmonella and Campylobacter jejuni in chickens and E. coli O157:H7 in cattle. However, more rigorous and comprehensive research is req

Trichoderma afroharzianum TRI07 metabolites inhibit Alternaria alternata growth and induce tomato defense-related enzymes.

Identifying a viable substitute for the limited array of current antifungal agents stands as a crucial objective in modern agriculture. Consequently, extensive worldwide research has been undertaken to unveil eco-friendly and effective agents capable of controlling pathogens resistant to the presently employed fungicides. This study explores the efficacy of Trichoderma isolates in combating tomato leaf spot disease, primarily caused by Alternaria alternata. The identified pathogen, A. alternata Alt3, was isolated and confirmed through the ITS region (OQ888806). Six Trichoderma isolates were as

A review of historical and recent locust outbreaks: Links to global warming, food security and mitigation strategies.

Locusts differ from ordinary grasshoppers in their ability to swarm over long distances and are among the oldest migratory pests. The ecology and biology of locusts make them among the most devastating pests worldwide and hence the calls for actions to prevent the next outbreaks. The most destructive of all locust species is the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria). Here, we review the current locust epidemic 2020 outbreak and its causes and prevention including the green technologies that may provide a reference for future directions of locust control and food security. Integrated Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Analyses Reveal Early Concentration-Dependent Responses of Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus Seedlings to Imidacloprid.

BACKGROUND: Imidacloprid, a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide, is routinely applied to control pests in Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus, a crucial medicinal herb producing Astragali Radix. However, the early short-term transcriptional and metabolic responses of its seedlings under imidacloprid gradient stress remain poorly characterized. METHODS: In this study, 80-day seedlings were subjected to three foliar spray treatments: blank control (CK), the recommended imidacloprid concentration (2000-fold dilution, 475 mg·L-1), and an excessively high concentration (500-fold dilution, 1
