Study Design and Rationale for the Phase 3 Clinical Development Program of Enobosarm, a Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator, for the Prevention and Treatment of Muscle Wasting in Cancer Patients (POWER Trials).

Muscle wasting in cancer is a common and often occult condition that can occur prior to overt signs of weight loss and before a clinical diagnosis of cachexia can be made. Muscle wasting in cancer is an important and independent predictor of progressive functional impairment, decreased quality of life, and increased mortality. Although several therapeutic agents are currently in development for the treatment of muscle wasting or cachexia in cancer, the majority of these agents do not directly inhibit muscle loss. Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) have the potential to increase lea

A Comprehensive Assessment of Various Outcome Scores to Evaluate Total Hip Arthroplasties.

INTRODUCTION: Many scoring systems have been developed that serve to evaluate outcomes following total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, most systems focus on specific aspects of a patient's recovery rather than investigating a broad spectrum of parameters, which prevent physicians from obtaining a sufficient impression of a patient's recovery. Therefore, we evaluated existing scoring systems to assess the outcome categories included and parameters of interest. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined all hip scoring systems currently available in the literature. The outcomes measured in each scorin

Osteo-cise: strong bones for life: protocol for a community-based randomised controlled trial of a multi-modal exercise and osteoporosis education program for older adults at risk of falls and fractures.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis affects over 220 million people worldwide, and currently there is no 'cure' for the disease. Thus, there is a need to develop evidence-based, safe and acceptable prevention strategies at the population level that target multiple risk factors for fragility fractures to reduce the health and economic burden of the condition. METHODS/DESIGN: The Osteo-cise: Strong Bones for Life study will investigate the effectiveness and feasibility of a multi-component targeted exercise, osteoporosis education/awareness and behavioural change program for improving bone health and musc

A clinical index to stratify hospitalized older adults according to risk for new-onset disability.

BACKGROUND: Many older adults who are independent prior to hospitalization develop a new disability by hospital discharge. Early risk stratification for new-onset disability may improve care. Thus, this study's objective was to develop and validate a clinical index to determine, at admission, risk for new-onset disability among older, hospitalized adults at discharge. DESIGN: Data analyses derived from two prospective studies. SETTING: Two teaching hospitals in Ohio. PARTICIPANTS: Eight hundred eighty-five patients aged 70 years and older were discharged from a general medical service at a

Effects of genes, sex, age, and activity on BMC, bone size, and areal and volumetric BMD.

UNLABELLED: Quantitative genetic analyses of bone data for 710 inter-related individuals 8-85 yr of age found high heritability estimates for BMC, bone area, and areal and volumetric BMD that varied across bone sites. Activity levels, especially time in moderate plus vigorous activity, had notable effects on bone. In some cases, these effects were age and sex specific. INTRODUCTION: Genetic and environmental factors play a complex role in determining BMC, bone size, and BMD. This study assessed the heritability of bone measures; characterized the effects of age, sex, and physical activity on

Functional outcomes following trauma-related lower-extremity amputation.

BACKGROUND: The principal aims of this study were to examine functional outcomes following trauma-related lower-extremity amputation and to compare outcomes according to the amputation levels. We hypothesized that above-the-knee amputations would result in less favorable outcomes than would through-the-knee or below-the-knee amputations. A secondary aim was to examine the factors, in addition to amputation level, that influence outcome, including the type of soft-tissue coverage, selected patient characteristics, and the technological sophistication of the prosthetic device. METHODS: A cohort

Testosterone Treatment in Prostate Cancer Survivors With Hypogonadism: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: A majority of men with prostate cancer have low-grade cancer and an excellent prognosis after radical prostatectomy. Hypogonadism and associated symptoms impair quality of life in prostate cancer survivors. Many guidelines, citing a lack of randomized clinical trials showing safety and efficacy of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), consider a history of prostate cancer a contraindication for TRT. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short-term safety and efficacy of TRT in prostate cancer survivors with symptomatic hypogonadism. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized, plac

Hydrotherapy in the Rehabilitation of Functional Performance and Gait in Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Background and Objectives: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative joint disease that affects quality of life through pain, impaired functional performance, and altered gait patterns. Hydrotherapy is a well-tolerated form of physical rehabilitation, especially suitable for patients with severe pain, as water's properties support movement while reducing joint load. Its effects have been widely studied, primarily focusing on patient-reported outcomes, with limited synthesis of functional performance and gait-related outcomes. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed

Evidence-based labor management: postpartum care after vaginal delivery (part 6).

In the setting of postpartum care after vaginal delivery, rooming-in is associated with a higher rate of exclusive breastfeeding rate at hospital discharge, but there is insufficient evidence to support or refute rooming-in to increase breastfeeding at 6 months. Education and support for breastfeeding are valuable interventions to promote initiation of breastfeeding whether it is offered by a healthcare professional, nonhealthcare professional, or peer. A combined intervention, a professional provider-led intervention, having a protocol available for the provider training program, and implemen
