INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a widely used procedure to remove complex upper tract renal calculi by means of a nephroscope. Although less invasive, PCNL is associated with significant pain owing to soft tissue injury. Most of these patients have mild to moderately compromised renal function. An anaesthesia plan that reduces intraoperative requirement of anaesthetics, analgesics, muscle relaxants and postoperative requirement of systemic analgesics is essential. Paravertebral Block (PVB) in combination with general anaesthesia may be an ideal technique for achieving all

INTRODUCTION: Large stones in renal pelvis can be treated with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) or pyelolithotomy (either by open or laparoscopic techniques). PCNL is difficult in undilated system. For pyelolithotomy, laparoscopy is more preferable over the open surgery. Surgeons are more familiar with the tansperitoneoscopic anatomy than retroperitoneoscopic one, but retroperitoneoscopic approach can be attempted if we anticipate the problems in the transperitoneal route.

BACKGROUND: Urinary lithiasis constitutes a recurrent pathology affecting a relatively young population. The risk of progression to chronic renal failure and the cost of treatment are the most important issues. Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is responsible for urolithiasis and nephrocalcinosis in 7% of patients, and it represents the 7th cause of urolithiasis in Tunisia. Unfortunately, it remains an underdiagnosed pathology although it is curable. We aim to determine the clinical, biological, therapeutic, and evolutionary particularities of urinary lithiasis associated with PHPT in a nephr

Introduction Surgical treatment of pediatric kidney stones has dramatically changed in recent years due to the miniaturization of surgical instruments and the availability of intracorporeal lithotriptors. Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) technique is now considered an effective and minimally invasive procedure in renal stones. However, in the pediatric age group, the number of studies on this subject is very limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the RIRS in the treatment of kidney stones in children. Material and methods The data of 25 pediatric stone

BACKGROUND: Several reports demonstrated the effectiveness of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) in the management of pediatric upper tract urolithiasis. The majority of these studies used the stone-free rate as the main indicator for treatment success. Efficacy Quotient (EQ) is an important outcome measure because it not only takes into consideration the stone-free rate, but also includes other undesirable outcomes that increase patient morbidity and utilizes hospital resources. Nevertheless, very few studies reported on the EQ of pediatric SWL at various locations in the upper tract.

Background & Objectives: Laser lithotripsy is the standard energy source for mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mini-PCNL). Although Holmium:YAG (Ho:YAG), Thulium Fiber Laser (TFL), and pulsed Thulium:YAG (p-Tm:YAG) are currently available for clinical use, direct comparisons among all three laser technologies are lacking. This study aimed to compare the efficacy, safety, and procedural performance of Ho:YAG, TFL, and p-Tm:YAG during mini-PCNL. The primary endpoint was the stone-free rate (SFR). Secondary outcomes included complications, operative time, lasing time, total energy delivered, and

INTRODUCTION: Endourological procedures, including ureterorenoscopy (URS), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), are the standard of care for managing urolithiasis but remain associated with postoperative fever (POF). POF is often linked to preoperative bacteriuria or infected stones and can precede urosepsis. While urine culture is the gold standard for detecting urinary tract infections, its 72-hour delay limits perioperative decision-making. Urine Gram stain (UGS) is a rapid and inexpensive diagnostic tool capable of detecting bacteriuria within minu

Background: Over the last 30 years, the incidence of pediatric urolithiasis (PU) has been increasing and the surgical management has evolved toward a minimally invasive approach (MIA). We reported the experience of two Centers of Pediatric Surgery in the management of PU, focusing on MIA as first choice in treatment. Methods: Data were retrospectively analyzed from October 2009 to October 2019 in children with urolithiasis who were admitted to two referral Italian Centers of Pediatric Surgery. Demographic and clinical data of the patients, features of the urolithiasis, type of surgery were con

Background and Objective: The cost of imaging and interventions in the surgical field varies between countries and sometimes within different regions of the same country. Procedural cost takes into account equipment, consumables, operating room, surgical, anesthetic and nursing teams, radiology, medications, and hospital stay. Health care systems therefore face an incredible burden related to investigations and surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to collect costs of imaging and interventions for kidney calculi across different hospitals and health care systems in the world. Methods:

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of large renal stones (≥1 cm) in paediatric patients is challenging. The usual treatment options include percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) or shockwave lithotripsy (SWL). There is a rise in the use of ureteroscopy and laser stone fragmentation (URSL) for paediatric stones; however, outcomes of treatment for large renal stones in this age group are still largely unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the outcome of URSL for large paediatric renal stones ≥1 cm treated at the present institution over the last 5 years.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of ou
