Treatment retention, return to use, and recovery support following COVID-19 relaxation of methadone take-home dosing in two rural opioid treatment programs: A mixed methods analysis.

OBJECTIVES: In March 2020, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration permitted Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) to relax restrictions on take-home methadone and promoted telehealth to minimize potential exposures to COVID-19. We assessed the effects of COVID-19-related changes on take-home methadone dosing in two OTPs serving five rural Oregon counties. METHODS: We used a mixed-methods convergent design. The OTPs extracted urine drug test (UDT) results, take-home methadone regimens, and treatment retention from the electronic health record (EHR) for patients (n = 377). A m

Endoglin Is an Endothelial Housekeeper against Inflammation: Insight in ECFC-Related Permeability through LIMK/Cofilin Pathway.

Endoglin (Eng) is an endothelial cell (EC) transmembrane glycoprotein involved in adhesion and angiogenesis. Eng mutations result in vessel abnormalities as observed in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia of type 1. The role of Eng was investigated in endothelial functions and permeability under inflammatory conditions, focusing on the actin dynamic signaling pathway. Endothelial Colony-Forming Cells (ECFC) from human cord blood and mouse lung/aortic EC (MLEC, MAEC) from Eng+/+ and Eng+/- mice were used. ECFC silenced for Eng with Eng-siRNA and ctr-siRNA were used to test tubulogenesis and p

Ixodes spp. from Dogs and Cats in the United States: Diversity, Seasonality, and Prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum.

Ixodes spp. are commonly found on dogs and cats throughout the world. In the eastern United States, 16S rDNA sequence of Ixodes scapularis, the predominant species, reveals two clades-American and Southern. To confirm the species and clades of Ixodes spp. ticks submitted from pets, we examined ticks morphologically and evaluated 16S rDNA sequence from 500 ticks submitted from 253 dogs, 99 cats, 1 rabbit, and 1 ferret from 41 states. To estimate pathogen prevalence, flaB of Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) sensu stricto and 16S rDNA of Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Ap) were amplified and sequenced. Most

State-level seat belt use in the United States, 2011-2016: Comparison of self-reported with observed use and use by fatally injured occupants.

INTRODUCTION: Despite 49 states and the District of Columbia having seat belt laws that permit either primary or secondary enforcement, nearly half of persons who die in passenger vehicle crashes in the United States are unbelted. Monitoring seat belt use is important for measuring the effectiveness of strategies to increase belt use. OBJECTIVE: Document self-reported seat belt use by state seat belt enforcement type and compare 2016 self-reported belt use with observed use and use among passenger vehicle occupant (PVO) fatalities. METHODS: We analyzed the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance

Movement of St. Louis encephalitis virus in the Western United States, 2014- 2018.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is a flavivirus that circulates in an enzootic cycle between birds and mosquitoes and can also infect humans to cause febrile disease and sometimes encephalitis. Although SLEV is endemic to the United States, no activity was detected in California during the years 2004 through 2014, despite continuous surveillance in mosquitoes and sentinel chickens. In 2015, SLEV-positive mosquito pools were detected in Maricopa County, Arizona, concurrent with an outbreak of human SLEV disease. SLEV-positive mosquito pools were also detected in southeastern California and

Infection prevalence and patterns in self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the face.

OBJECTIVE: Self-inflicted gunshot wounds (SIGSWs) to the craniomaxillofacial region are uncommon injuries but are associated with a high mortality rate. Therefore, treating these patients is a rare occurrence even in the largest trauma centers. As with many rare conditions, data specifically addressing this injury pattern are scarce. Because of the proximity of the blast, even low-velocity injuries can be associated with significant avulsion of tissue, comminution of structures, and tissue die back. Previous case reports have recommended the use of prophylactic antibiotics, but no study has sp

Examining the Prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Associated Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors Among Low-Income Uninsured Adults.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to poor adult health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease. However, little is known about its prevalence, specifically in low-income populations. The objective of this study was to estimate the extent of ACEs in a low-income, nonclinical, uninsured adult population and assess the relationship between ACEs and cardiovascular disease risk factors. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study leverages the OHIE's (Oregon Health Insurance Experiment) study population, uninsured adults who were randomly selected to apply for Medicaid, and data c

Thiamine dose response in human milk with supplementation among lactating women in Cambodia: study protocol for a double-blind, four-parallel arm randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency remains a concern in Cambodia where women with low thiamine intake produce thiamine-poor milk, putting their breastfed infants at risk of impaired cognitive development and potentially fatal infantile beriberi. Thiamine fortification of salt is a potentially low-cost, passive means of combating thiamine deficiency; however, both the dose of thiamine required to optimise milk thiamine concentrations as well as usual salt intake of lactating women are unknown. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In this community-based randomised controlled trial, 320 lactating

Molecular evolution in Panagrolaimus nematodes: origins of parthenogenesis, hermaphroditism and the Antarctic species P. davidi.

BACKGROUND: As exemplified by the famously successful model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, nematodes offer outstanding animal systems for investigating diverse biological phenomena due to their small genome sizes, short generation times and ease of laboratory maintenance. Nematodes in the genus Panagrolaimus have served in comparative development and anhydrobiosis studies, and the Antarctic species P. davidi offers a powerful paradigm for understanding the biological mechanisms of extreme cold tolerance. Panagrolaimus nematodes are also unique in that examples of gonochoristic, hermaphroditi

Insulin infusion with parenteral nutrition in extremely low birth weight infants with hyperglycemia.

From Nov. 7, 1983, to Nov. 6, 1986, all infants with birth weight less than or equal to 1000 gm admitted to Oregon Health Sciences University who had persistent hyperglycemia and glycosuria were treated with graded insulin infusion while energy intake was increased to at least 100 kcal/kg/day (419 kilojoules/kg/day). The records of these infants were reviewed to define the clinical characteristics of infants likely to develop hyperglycemia and to see whether insulin administration would allow goals for energy intake to be met. There were 76 surviving infants; 34 received insulin and 42 did not
