BACKGROUND: As the various systems in the body are inter-connected to form a single structural unit, a pathological condition in one area can also affect other areas. There are many known correlations between the visual and motor system. The importance of visual function, particularly the paracentral peripheral field of view, in motor coordination, ambulation and the maintenance of balance has been amply demonstrated. In line with current medical principles, which are moving towards a more holistic view of the human body, this study aims to investigate, in an interdisciplinary manner, the incid

OBJECTIVES: To review the published literature in order to address clinical questions regarding the indications, effects and outcomes of mandibular incisor extraction in orthodontics.
DATA SOURCES: Three electronic databases were searched: PubMed (1950-January 2011), Ovid Embase+Ovid Embase Classic (1947-January 2011) and Cochrane library (6 Cochrane databases, 1996-January 2011). The following journals were additionally searched: American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (1960-January 2011), Angle Orthodontist (1960-January 2011), European Journal of Orthodontics (1970-Jan

BACKGROUND: The hallmark signs of upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) include increased breathing effort, frequent arousals during sleep, and daytime drowsiness without noticeable problems with oxygenation or airflow. It may involve craniofacial traits such as a long face, small mouth, retrognathia, nasal obstruction, narrow throat, and high palate and primarily affects young, thin people who suffer from insomnia. UARS causes fatigue by interfering with sleep. Due to airway obstruction, mouth breathing in children can cause Class II Division 1 malocclusion and a V-shaped maxillary arch.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the transverse dental arch relationship of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) versus the noncleft controls in Northeastern region of Thailand.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 80 participants comprising 40 nonsyndromic children with UCLP and 40 healthy noncleft children of similar age (mean age: 11 years). The study was conducted at the Faculty of Dentistry, Khon Kaen University, Thailand. Each participant underwent assessments for Angle's classification, overjet, overbite, and transverse dental arch width, along wi

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to determine whether prescribed molar intrusion, with or without virtual occlusal bite-blocks (BB), resulted in actual molar intrusion and assisted with anterior open bite (AOB) correction in adult patients treated with Invisalign clear aligners (Align Technology, Santa Clara, Calif).
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted with 36 adult patients with AOB. Subjects were divided into 2 treatment groups: planned molar intrusion (PMI) and no-PMI (No-PMI). PMI was obtained from the tooth movement tables in the ClinCheck software. Patients with PMI were further

Skeletal Class III malocclusion can significantly impact psychological well-being. Although bimaxillary surgery is a well-established corrective intervention, its psychological effects are not fully understood. This study aims to investigate changes in self-esteem, sensitivity to criticism, and social appearance anxiety following surgery to inform targeted nursing interventions for psychological adaptation. This comparative study included 205 participants: 150 patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent bimaxillary surgery, and a control group of 55 individuals without malocclu

INTRODUCTION: The study aims to predict tooth extraction decision based on four machine learning methods and analyze the feature contribution, so as to shed light on the important basis for experts of tooth extraction planning, providing reference for orthodontic treatment planning.
METHODS: This study collected clinical information of 192 patients with malocclusion diagnosis and treatment plans. This study used four machine learning strategies, including decision tree, random forest, support vector machine (SVM) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) to predict orthodontic extraction decisions on c

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the clinical efficacy of early masticatory myofunction rehabilitation combined with conventional functional appliances for the treatment of class Ⅱ, division 1 malocclusion in orthodontic children during the growing phase.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: A comparative retrospective cohort study, enrolled patients diagnosed with class Ⅱ/1 in the stage of late mixed or early permanent dentition. Patients were divided into a TBA group (Cohort 1): receiving Twin-block appliance treatment; and a MMR group (Cohort 2): receiving either early masticatory myofunction rehabilitation as adj

PURPOSE: Labial movement of mandibular incisors has traditionally been considered a risk factor for gingival recession. The aims of this study were to assess changes in prevalence and severity of gingival recession of mandibular incisors during orthodontic treatment of adults in whom the incisors had been moved labially and to identify parameters that could predict recession.
MATERIAL: The sample consisted of 150 adult patients (aged 33.7 +/- 9.5 years, mean +/- SD) treated nonextraction with fixed appliances. Pretreatment overjet, overbite, degree of crowding, presence of tooth rotation, can

INTRODUCTION: Cervical vertebral column morphology and head posture were examined and related to craniofacial morphology in preorthodontic children and adolescents with anterior open bite.
METHODS: One hundred eleven patients (ages, 6-18 years) with an anterior open bite of more than 0 mm were divided into 2 groups of skeletal or dentoalveolar open bite. The skeletal open-bite group comprised 38 subjects (19 girls, 19 boys). The dentoalveolar open-bite group comprised 73 subjects (43 girls, 30 boys). Visual assessment of the cervical column and measurements of craniofacial morphology and head

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of treatment timing on long-term dentoskeletal effects of Class II treatment with removable functional appliances followed by full-fixed appliance therapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A group of 46 patients (23 females and 23 males) with Class II malocclusion treated consecutively with either Bionator or Activator, followed by fixed appliances was compared with a matched control group of 31 subjects (16 females and 15 males) with untreated Class II malocclusion. Dental transposition is relatively infrequent anomaly of the developing dentition. This article focuses on canine transposition and explores the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of this challenging anomaly. Specifically, the management of a case of canine transposition involving an unerupted maxillary central incisor is described.

This article describes the orthodontic treatment of a young woman with a Class II malocclusion and maxillomandibular prognathism. One orthodontic mini- implant was placed in the posterior area of the palate to provide anchorage for?a transpalatal arch. The force for molar distalization was applied using an elastic chain from the lever arm inserted on the transpalatal arch to the mini-implant. Two sliding jigs were applied buccally as a complement for Class II malocclusion correction. This system created an efficient mechanotherapy for maxillary molar distalization. The active treatment period

Multiple treatment options are available for patients who have impacted canines in addition to congenitally missing lateral incisors. This article describes the treatment of a 13-year-old postpubertal girl with bilaterally impacted permanent maxillary canines, missing lateral incisors, retained deciduous canines, and a midline diastema. The orthodontic treatment plan included extraction of the deciduous canines. A lingual and labial approach (1-couple force system) was used to move the permanent canines into the arch. Through a collaborative team effort, including an orthodontist and a periodo
