Prevalence of sand fly fever, West Nile, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and leptospirosis antibodies in Pakistani military personnel.

To determine the prevalence of antibodies to viral diseases known or suspected to be present in Pakistan, we studied 570 sera from three groups of adults; two of the groups were involved in outbreaks of hepatitis, and the third included men admitted to a hospital for evaluation of febrile illnesses. Immunoglobulin G antileptospiral antibody was found in 1 to 6% of the subjects, with the highest rate in enlisted military personnel hospitalized for febrile illness. One man in the group with febrile illness had significantly elevated immunoglobulin M antileptospiral antibody titers. However, in a

Strategic surveillance plan for zoonotic leishmaniosis in Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Leishmania infantum is a vector-borne zoonotic parasite causing zoonotic leishmaniosis across Southern European countries, with poor prognosis for immunocompromised humans or animals. Improved monitoring and control of zoonotic leishmaniosis at the level of animal reservoir is critical to support One Health coordinated responses aligned with the objectives set out in the WHO roadmap for Neglected Tropical Diseases. METHODS: We evaluate the suitability of a leishmaniosis surveillance system grounded on the network of public municipal animal shelters in Portugal (CROA), using dogs a

Leishmania (Mundinia) martiniquensis beyond Southeast Asia: Molecular, clinico-pathological and entomological evidence of an emerging visceral leishmaniasis focus from Sri Lanka, South Asia.

The subgenus Leishmania (Mundinia) is a recently recognized, phylogenetically distinct lineage whose species cause visceral, cutaneous and disseminated leishmaniasis, but autochthonous human transmission has been molecularly confirmed in only a few settings worldwide. This reports an integrated molecular, histopathological and entomological investigation of a 66-year-old Sri Lankan man with pancytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly and prolonged fever of initially unclear aetiology. Species identification used three molecular markers, the 18S ribosomal RNA gene, the ITS1 region and the heat shock prote

Entomological surveillance of dwellings and risk factors for autochthonous cases of human leishmaniasis in a European Mediterranean hotspot.

The objectives of this study were to establish a spatial framework and monitor a Mediterranean leishmaniasis hotspot over time and identify clinical leishmaniasis risk factors through comparative analysis of patient habits, housing conditions, and entomological surveillance data. The study was conducted in southern Spain. The data set (from 2003 to 2024), was derived from various sources, including notification systems, hospital databases, and patient and family surveys. Sand flies were collected using CDC and sticky traps in and around the households of 8 cases. Patients and family members we

A morphological and molecular study of phlebotomine sand flies of Taiwan reveals the record of six species.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies, the key vectors in the transmission of Leishmania parasites, pose a global health challenge. Although leishmaniasis has been reported in the indigenous Taiwanese population, the last sand fly survey, based on morphological features, was conducted over two decades ago. Thus, updated information on the phlebotomine sand fly fauna and disease transmission risk in Taiwan is required. In this study, a nationwide survey was conducted using molecular methods to ascertain the current sand fly status and disease transmission risk in Taiwan. METHODS: A total of 1292

Seropositivity of Visceral leishmaniasis on people of VL endemic three districts of Nepal.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a life-threatening vector borne disease caused by the Leishmania donovani species complex. In Nepal, it is transmitted to humans by L donovani infected Phlebotomus argentipes sand flies [12]. The pathogenesis of VL is complex, and the clinical presentation ranges from asymptomatic infection to severe and fatal disease. Asymptomatic infection may act as potential reservoirs for sustained transmission of VL in endemic areas. We investigated the sero-prevalence of symptomatic and asymptomatic infection of VL in people of three endemic districts of Nepal by serology

Asymptomatic Visceral Leishmania infantum Infection in US Soldiers Deployed to Iraq.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), due to Leishmania infantum, is a persistent intracellular parasitic infection transmitted by the bite of infected sand flies. Symptomatic VL has been reported in U.S. soldiers with Iraq deployment. Untreated symptomatic VL can be fatal; asymptomatic VL (AVL) may establish a lifelong risk of reactivation. We report prevalence and AVL risk factors in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) deployers during 2002-11. METHODS: Healthy soldiers exposed to VL endemic areas in Iraq and 50 controls who never traveled to endemic regions were recruited through military hea

Enhanced protective efficacy of nonpathogenic recombinant leishmania tarentolae expressing cysteine proteinases combined with a sand fly salivary antigen.

BACKGROUND: Novel vaccination approaches are needed to prevent leishmaniasis. Live attenuated vaccines are the gold standard for protection against intracellular pathogens such as Leishmania and there have been new developments in this field. The nonpathogenic to humans lizard protozoan parasite, Leishmania (L) tarentolae, has been used effectively as a vaccine platform against visceral leishmaniasis in experimental animal models. Correspondingly, pre-exposure to sand fly saliva or immunization with a salivary protein has been shown to protect mice against cutaneous leishmaniasis. METHODOLOGY

Chandipura virus encephalitis: an emerging pediatric neurotropic threat in india-virology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, and public health challenges.

Chandipura virus (CHPV) is an emerging neurotropic RNA virus and member of the Rhabdoviridae family, causing outbreaks of acute encephalitis in India, mostly in children under 15 years of age. The manuscript reviews in detail the virology, genetics, clinical features, epidemiology, transmission, immunopathogenesis, and treatment of CHPV. CHPV rapidly infects neuronal tissue and activates the extrinsic pathways of neuronal apoptosis through Fas-mediated apoptosis, resulting in rapid neuronal degeneration within 24-48 h. The recent re-emergence of CHPV is another significant re-emergence in Guja

A Comprehensive Review of Epidemiology, Environmental Factors, and Control Strategies for Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Iran: Challenges and Prospects.

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) remains a significant public health challenge in Iran, which reported an incidence rate of 15.8 cases per 100,000 individuals in 2019. Among the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region, Iran bears a disproportionate burden of this neglected tropical disease, with 18 out of its 31 provinces affected. ZCL is especially prevalent in rural and semiurban areas, where ecological and environmental factors create suitable conditions for disease transmission. Rodent reservoirs, particularly Meriones species, and specific vectors, such as Phlebotomus sandflie

Diagnostic techniques for visceral leishmaniasis: An overview of methods used in East Africa.

Leishmanias is a parasitic infection caused by a protozoan belonging to the genus Leishmania and transmitted by sand fly, Phlebotomus fly in the old world and Lutzomyia in the New world. The disease is prevalent in the tropics, subtropics, and Southern Europe, where it affects about 1.5 million to 2 million people annually. India, Bangladesh, Sudan, South Sudan, Brazil and Ethiopia account for up to 90% of all the VL cases. While Leishmania cases in Asia are declining, cases in East Africa especially in Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya have been increasing. The rise in East Afri

Seroprevalence of Toscana and sandfly fever Sicilian viruses in humans and livestock animals from western Saudi Arabia.

High seroprevalence rates of several phleboviruses have been reported in domestic animals and humans in sandfly-infested regions. Sandfly Fever Sicilian virus (SFSV) and Toscana virus (TOSV) are two of these viruses commonly transmitted by Phlebotomus sandflies. While SFSV can cause rapidly resolving mild febrile illness, TOSV could involve the central nervous system (CNS), causing diseases ranging from aseptic meningitis to meningoencephalitis. Sandfly-associated phleboviruses have not been investigated before in Saudi Arabia and are potential causes of infection given the prevalence of sandf

Efficacy of malachite green mediated photodynamic therapy on treatment of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: In vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a common zoonotic disease that is transmitted by phlebotomus and causes several clinical conditions, from self healing lesion to deadly internal organ involvement. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment method that leads to the generation of cytotoxic species and consequently to cell death and tissue destruction by visible light in the presence of a photosensitizer and oxygen. The aim of this study was to investigate effect of malachite green (MG)-mediated PDT in Leishmania tropica (L. tropica) promastigotes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Parasites were incubated with

Toscana virus encephalitis in Southwest Germany: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Toscana virus (TOSV) is an arthropod-borne virus transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies (Phlebotomus sp.) widespread throughout the Mediterranean having the potential to cause meningoencephalitis in humans. In Germany, the vectors of TOSV are introduced recently and become endemic especially in Southwestern Germany. As TOSV is not investigated regularly in patients with meningoencephalitis, cases of TOSV-neuroinvasive disease may remain mostly undetected. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study on patients with meningoencephalitis without identification of a causal patho

Elucidating the possible mechanism of action of some pathogen box compounds against Leishmania donovani.

Leishmaniasis is one of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) which is closely associated with poverty and has gained much relevance recently due to its opportunistic coinfection with HIV. It is a protozoan zoonotic disease transmitted by a dipteran Phlebotomus, Lutzomyia/ Sergentomyia sandfly; during blood meals on its vertebrate intermediate hosts. It is a four-faceted disease with its visceral form being more deadly if left untreated. It is endemic across the tropics and sub-tropical regions of the world. It can be considered the third most important NTD after malaria and lymphatic filaria

Survey of domestic cattle for anti-Leishmania antibodies and Leishmania DNA in a visceral leishmaniasis endemic area of Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), caused by an intracellular parasite Leishmania donovani in the Indian subcontinent, is considered to be anthroponotic. The role of domestic animals in its transmission is still unclear. Although cattle are the preferred blood host for Phlebotomus argentipes, the sandfly vector of VL in the Indian subcontinent, very little information is available for their role in the disease transmission. In this study, we examined domestic cattle for serological and molecular evidence of Leishmania infection in a VL-endemic area in Bangladesh. Blood samples from 138 d
