Projections of the nucleus of the optic tract to the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis and prepositus hypoglossi nucleus in the pigmented rat as demonstrated by anterograde and retrograde transport methods.

The visual pathways from the nucleus of the optic tract (NOT) to the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis (NRTP) and prepositus hypoglossi nucleus (ph) were studied following injections of tritiated leucine into the NOT of pigmented rats. The cell bodies of origin of the pretectal-NRTP, NRTP-ph, and pretectal-ph projections were determined using retrograde horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique. The pretectum projects strongly to the rostral two-thirds of the central and pericentral subdivisions of the NRTP and sends a remarkably smaller projection to the ph. Both are entirely ipsilateral. A Brainstem Neural Substrate for Stopping Locomotion.

Locomotion occurs sporadically and needs to be started, maintained, and stopped. The neural substrate underlying the activation of locomotion is partly known, but little is known about mechanisms involved in termination of locomotion. Recently, reticulospinal neurons (stop cells) were found to play a crucial role in stopping locomotion in the lamprey: their activation halts ongoing locomotion and their inactivation slows down the termination process. Intracellular recordings of these cells revealed a distinct activity pattern, with a burst of action potentials at the beginning of a locomotor b

[The control of gaze (3). Neurological defects].

Eye movements serve vision, which has two different aims: changing images using saccades, i.e. rapid eye movements, and stabilizing new images on the retina using slow eye movements. Eye movements are performed by ocular motor nuclei in the brainstem, on which supranuclear pathways--originating in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum and vestibular structures--converge. It is useful for the neurologist to know the clinical abnormalities of eye movements visible at the bedside since such signs are helpful for localization. Eye movement paralysis may be nuclear or infranuclear (nerves), involving all

Bowditch Lecture. Renal afferent inputs to ascending spinal pathways.

Studies of renal afferent fibers and their functions have continued since the work of Pines in 1959 (Fiziol. Zh. SSSR Im. I M Sechenova 45: 1339-1347, 1959). The kidney contains mechanoreceptors and chemoreceptors that appear to have two major functions. First, renal mechano- and chemoreceptors evoke a variety of renorenal reflexes, while more global cardiovascular reflexes are primarily evoked by renal mechanoreceptors. A second function of renal afferent fibers is to cause the pain of renal disease. Recent studies suggest that renal afferent fibers may also regulate secretion of vasopressin

GLI1-Altered Tumors of the Ovary: A Report of 4 Cases of an Underrecognized Neoplasm That May Mimic Sex Cord-Stromal Tumors.

GLI1 (glioma-associated oncogene homologue 1) altered neoplasms are an emerging group of tumors of presumed mesenchymal derivation, which occur mostly in the head and neck or soft tissues of the trunk and extremities. We have recently identified 4 ovarian neoplasms with GLI1 gene fusions; all were initially diagnosed as unusual sex cord-stromal tumors (n = 3) or endometrioid adenocarcinoma with sex cord-like morphology (n = 1). Patients' age ranged from 11 to 70 years and tumor size from 3 to 15 cm; all were confined to the ovary. Three tumors displayed dominant patterns of large irregular agg

Coordination of Locomotion by Serotonergic Neurons in the Predatory Gastropod Pleurobranchaea californica.

Similar design characterizes neuronal networks for goal-directed motor control across the complex, segmented vertebrates, insects, and polychaete annelids with jointed appendages. Evidence is lacking for whether this design evolved independently in those lineages, evolved in parallel with segmentation and appendages, or could have been present in a soft-bodied common ancestor. We examined coordination of locomotion in an unsegmented, ciliolocomoting gastropod, the sea slug Pleurobranchaea californica, which may better resemble the urbilaterian ancestor. Previously, bilateral A-cluster neurons

Miller Fisher syndrome, Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis and Guillain-Barré syndrome overlap with persistent non-demyelinating conduction blocks: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) and Bickerstaff's Brainstem Encephalitis (BBE) share some clinical features and a common immunological profile characterized by anti-GQ1b antibodies. Some MFS patients overlap with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) or BBE. We report a patient with MFS, BBE, and axonal GBS overlap in whom serial electrophysiological studies showed persistent motor conduction blocks (CBs). CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old man acutely developed ophtalmoparesis, ataxia and areflexia suggesting MFS. Paresthesias, severe weakness, and drowsiness rapidly developed indicating an o

Immunohistochemical analysis of the neurotoxic effects of DSP-4 identifies two populations of noradrenergic axon terminals.

N-(2-chloroethyl)-N-ethyl-2-bromobenzylamine (DSP-4) is a potent and highly selective neurotoxin which induces degeneration of noradrenergic axons. The effects of DSP-4 vary considerably in different brain regions: the drug produces nearly complete depletion of noradrenaline in neocortex, hippocampus, cerebellum and spinal cord, but only partial depletion in hypothalamus and brainstem. In this study we have employed an immunohistochemical method to assess the neurotoxic effects of DSP-4 on the structural integrity of central noradrenergic neurons in the rat, and to identify those noradrenergic

Nonlanguage disorders of speech reflect complex neurologic apparatus.

The mute or nearly mute patient who is alert and has good understanding of speech and a right hemiparesis could have Broca's aphasia, akinesia of speech (transcortical motor aphasia), or aphemia. The patient who has Broca's aphasia does not write well, and his speech does not improve greatly with repetition. The speech of a patient with akinesia of speech improves with repetition. The aphemic patient writes normally, but his speech does not improve with repetition. The mute patient whose eyes are open but who is poorly responsive and moves little or not at all could be an akinetic mute (with e

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a non-neoplastic pulmonary disease that is characterized by the formation of scar tissue within the lungs in the absence of any known provocation. IPF is a rare disease which affects approximately 5 million persons worldwide. The prevalence is estimated to be slightly greater in men (20.2/100,000) than in women (13.2/100,000). The mean age at presentation is 66 years. IPF initially manifests with symptoms of exercise-induced breathless and dry coughing. Auscultation of the lungs reveals early inspiratory crackles, predominantly located in the lower poster

Cholinoceptive pontine reticular structures modify the postural adjustments during the limb movements induced by cortical stimulation.

1. Activation of the pontine reticular formation (pRF) and the related medullary inhibitory reticulospinal (RS) system decreases the postural activity. This effect can be achieved either by local injection into the dorsal pontine tegmentum of cholinergic agonists which excite cholinoceptive pRF neurons, or by injection of noradrenergic agents which block the inhibitory influence exerted by the locus coeruleus (LC) neurons on the pRF. The main aim on the present study was to analyze the effects of tonic activation of these pRF neurons on the postural adjustments accompanying limb movements indu

Resolving GABAA/benzodiazepine receptors: cellular and subcellular localization in the CNS with monoclonal antibodies.

Monoclonal antibodies, raised against a purified GABAA/benzodiazepine receptor complex from bovine cerebral cortex, have been used to visualize the cellular and subcellular distribution of receptorlike immunoreactivity in the rat CNS, cat spinal cord, and bovine and postmortem human brain. Two different antibodies have been used for these studies; bd-17 recognizes the beta-subunit (Mr 55 kDa) in all the species tested, whereas bd-24 recognizes the alpha-subunit (Mr 50 kDa) of bovine and human but not rat and cat tissues. In bovine and human brain, both antibodies produced very similar staining

Ligustilide enhances TNTs-mediated mitochondrial transfer to accelerate the reactivation of TECs in sleep deprivation induced postpartum mouse.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (Danggui) has been widely used by puerperae in China for postpartum recovery for more than a thousand years. Its key active ingredient, ligustilide (LIG), has been documented to exert thymus-repairing effects; however, its role and underlying mechanisms in postpartum thymic regeneration impairment remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: During the puerperium, the acutely atrophied maternal thymus gradually returns to its non-pregnant state. However, frequent sleep deprivation (SD) resulting from neonatal breastfeeding often slows down

Brainstem Neural Circuits Triggering Vertical Saccades and Fixation.

Neurons in the nucleus raphe interpositus have tonic activity that suppresses saccadic burst neurons (BNs) during eye fixations, and that is inhibited before and during saccades in all directions (omnipause neurons, OPNs). We have previously demonstrated via intracellular recording and anatomical staining in anesthetized cats of both sexes that OPNs are inhibited by BNs in the medullary reticular formation (horizontal inhibitory BNs, IBNs). These horizontal IBNs receive monosynaptic input from the caudal horizontal saccade area of the superior colliculus (SC), and then produce monosynaptic inh

Ligustilide prevents thymic immune senescence by regulating Thymosin β15-dependent spatial distribution of thymic epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Thymus is the most crucial organ connecting immunity and aging. The progressive senescence of thymic epithelial cells (TECs) leads to the involution of thymus under aging, chronic stress and other factors. Ligustilide (LIG) is a major active component of the anti-aging Chinese herbal medicine Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels, but its role in preventing TEC-based thymic aging remains elusive. PURPOSE: This study explored the protective role of Ligustilide in alleviating ADM (adriamycin) -induced thymic immune senescence and its underlying molecular mechanisms. METHOD: The protectiv

The murine meninges acquire lymphoid tissue properties and harbour autoreactive B cells during chronic Trypanosoma brucei infection.

The meningeal space is a critical brain structure providing immunosurveillance for the central nervous system (CNS), but the impact of infections on the meningeal immune landscape is far from being fully understood. The extracellular protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei, which causes human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) or sleeping sickness, accumulates in the meningeal spaces, ultimately inducing severe meningitis and resulting in death if left untreated. Thus, sleeping sickness represents an attractive model to study immunological dynamics in the meninges during infection. Here, by combining

Differential Effect of Dopamine D4 Receptor Activation on Low-Frequency Oscillations in the Prefrontal Cortex and Hippocampus May Bias the Bidirectional Prefrontal-Hippocampal Coupling.

Dopamine D4 receptor (D4R) mechanisms are implicated in psychiatric diseases characterized by cognitive deficits, including schizophrenia, ADHD, and autism. The cellular mechanisms are poorly understood, but impaired neuronal synchronization in cortical networks was proposed to contribute to these deficits. In animal experiments, D4R activation was shown to generate aberrant increased gamma oscillations and to reduce performance on cognitive tasks requiring functional prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (HPC) networks. While fast oscillations in the gamma range are important for local sync

Chapter 2 Comparative anatomy and physiology of the corticospinal system.

The corticospinal tract provides the most direct pathway over which the cerebral cortex controls movement. In rodents and marsupials this influence is exerted largely upon interneurons in the dorsal horn of the spinal gray matter. However, ascending the phylogenetic scale through carnivores and primates, the number of corticospinal axons grows and corticospinal terminations shift progressively toward the interneurons of the intermediate zone and ventral horn, ultimately forming increasing numbers of synaptic terminations directly on the motoneurons themselves. Based on this phylogenetic trend,

The efferent system of cranial nerve nuclei: a comparative neuromorphological study.

A number of inconsistencies and controversies are inherent in the classification of cranial nerve nuclei based on the concepts of the various head-theories. The assumption of head segmentation, which is common to these theories, serves as the basis for designating the dorsomedial nuclei as the somatomotor column, although they innervate striated muscles of a viscus and a specific sense organ. The ventrolateral nuclei are called the specific visceromotor column; they innervate striated muscles in the branchiogenous area, but many of these muscles insert on skeletal elements. A series of compara
