Cardiorespiratory fitness is linked with heart rate variability during stress in "at-risk" adults.

BACKGROUND: Physiological mechanisms explaining why cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) predicts cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are incompletely understood. We examined if CRF modifies vagally mediated heart rate variability (HRV) during acute physical or psychosocial stress or night-time sleep in adults with cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: Seventy-eight adults (age 56 years [IQR 50-60], 74% female, body mass index 28 kg/m2 [IQR 25-31]) with frequent cardiovascular risk factors participated in this cross-sectional study. They went through physical (treadmill cardiopulmonary exercise

Too much of a good thing? Elevated baseline sleep spindles predict poor avoidance performance in rats.

Sleep spindles may be involved in synaptic plasticity. Learning-dependent increases in spindles have been observed in both humans and rats. In humans, the innate (i.e., baseline) number of spindles correlate with measures of academic potential such as Intelligence Quotient (IQ) tests. The present study investigated if spindles predict whether rats are able to learn to make avoidance responses in the two-way shuttle task. Baseline recordings were taken continuously for 24h prior to training on the two-way shuttle task for 50trials/day for two days followed by a 25 trial re-test on the third day

Landau-Kleffner syndrome with onset at 18 months and an initial diagnosis of pervasive developmental disorder.

We report one of the youngest and most intensively studied cases of Landau-Kleffner syndrome, with a follow-up of 5 years. The boy developed normally until the age of 18 months when he had two attacks, possibly epileptic. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was normal. Over the next 5 months he lost his six to ten words, did not engage with other children and became mute. When he was 34 months old a child-psychiatrist suggested a diagnosis of pervasive developmental disorder or developmental dysphasia. An EEG 3 months later showed abnormalities typical of Landau-Kleffner syndrome. His non-verbal abilit

Neural substrates of tinnitus severity.

Subjective chronic tinnitus is a prevalent auditory perception characterized by an absence of a corresponding acoustic source. It is often accompanied by hearing deficits and may lead to various psychological problems including sleep disorder, depression and anxiety. To investigate the differential neuronal profile of patients with severe and less severe chronic tinnitus, 34 tinnitus patients were distributed in two groups and their EEG resting state activity was compared. Using standardized Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (sLORETA) a significant and substantial frontal increase in t

Cross-modal transfer of statistical information benefits from sleep.

Extracting regularities from a sequence of events is essential for understanding our environment. However, there is no consensus regarding the extent to which such regularities can be generalised beyond the modality of learning. One reason for this could be the variation in consolidation intervals used in different paradigms, also including an opportunity to sleep. Using a novel statistical learning paradigm in which structured information is acquired in the auditory domain and tested in the visual domain over either 30 min or 24 h consolidation intervals, we show that cross-modal transfer can

Consciousness, information integration, and the brain.

Clinical observations have established that certain parts of the brain are essential for consciousness whereas other parts are not. For example, different areas of the cerebral cortex contribute different modalities and submodalities of consciousness, whereas the cerebellum does not, despite having even more neurons. It is also well established that consciousness depends on the way the brain functions. For example, consciousness is much reduced during slow wave sleep and generalized seizures, even though the levels of neural activity are comparable or higher than in wakefulness. To understand

Electroencephalographic study of the GABA-withdrawal syndrome in rats.

The spatial and temporal EEG features of the epileptogenic syndrome induced by cessation of chronic intracortical GABA infusion in normal rats are described. In the initial stages, the paroxysmal discharges (PDs) induced by withdrawal from unilateral GABA application may appear either unilaterally or bilaterally, although with greater amplitude on the infused side. PDs are transitorily accompanied by behavioral signs of distal myoclonus of the body territory corresponding to the infused area (contralateral hindlimb). Later, the paroxysmal activity becomes more localized, circumscribed to the c

Linking Hypothermia and Altered Metabolism with TrkB Activation.

Many mechanisms have been proposed to explain acute antidepressant drug-induced activation of TrkB neurotrophin receptors, but several questions remain. In a series of pharmacological experiments, we observed that TrkB activation induced by antidepressants and several other drugs correlated with sedation, and most importantly, coinciding hypothermia. Untargeted metabolomics of pharmacologically dissimilar TrkB activating treatments revealed effects on shared bioenergetic targets involved in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) breakdown and synthesis, demonstrating a common perturbation in metabolic a

Distribution Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Central Apnea in Chinese Pediatric Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Single-Center Study.

BACKGROUND: Central apnea (CA) events always can be seen in the polysomnographic (PSG) reports of children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and sometimes the central apnea index (CAI) is higher than the obstructive apnea and hypopnea index (OAHI). Commonly, the clinicians only attribute it to the age. This study aims to elucidate the distribution characteristics and major factors associated with CA in pediatric OSA. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of PSG data of children with OSA from January 2017 to March 2018 was performed. RESULTS: 856 children (317 girls and 539 boys, 4.9 ± 2.4

[The myelin mutant taiep as a model for abscence crisis].

BACKGROUND: Taiep rat is a myelin mutant rat with hypomyelination followed by progressive demyelination. This mutant presents cortical discharges with a spindle form, with an ascending and descending phases similar to absence epilepsy. METHODS: Taiep rats were maintained under standard animal room conditions with free access to balanced rodent pellets and tap water. Rats were anesthetized with chloral hydrate under aseptic conditions; three stainless steel screws and a bipolar electrode were implanted in the hippocampus. The signals were amplified, filtered and recorded using a video-EEG Harm

Bursts in the medial geniculate body: a comparison between anesthetized and unanesthetized states in guinea pig.

Thalamic high frequency bursts have long been described under anesthesia and during slow-wave sleep (SWS). More recently, studies in the lateral geniculate nucleus have pointed out that they are also present during waking (W). Here, we compared the bursts recorded in the medial geniculate body of guinea pigs under anesthesia or during periods of W and SWS. The tuning of single units was tested between threshold and 80 dB SPL in two conditions: (1) in restrained, undrugged, non-sleep-deprived guinea pigs (n=101 cells) and (2) under pentobarbital anesthesia (n=53 cells). Off-line analyses allowe

Epileptic activity on foramen ovale electrodes is associated with sleep and tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease.

Both sleep alterations and epileptiform activity are associated with the accumulation of amyloid-β and tau pathology and are currently investigated for potential therapeutic interventions in Alzheimer's disease. However, a bidirectional intertwining relationship between sleep and neuronal hyperexcitability might modulate the effects of Alzheimer's disease pathology on the corresponding associations. To investigate this, we performed multiple day simultaneous foramen ovale (FO) plus scalp EEG and polysomnography recordings and acquired 18F-MK6240 tau PET-MR in three patients in the prodromal st

[Multi-channel in vivo recording techniques: signal processing of action potentials and local field potentials].

Multi-channel in vivo recording techniques are used to record ensemble neuronal activity and local field potentials (LFP) simultaneously. One of the key points for the technique is how to process these two sets of recorded neural signals properly so that data accuracy can be assured. We intend to introduce data processing approaches for action potentials and LFP based on the original data collected through multi-channel recording system. Action potential signals are high-frequency signals, hence high sampling rate of 40 kHz is normally chosen for recording. Based on waveforms of extracellularl

Hypocretin deficiency in narcolepsy with cataplexy is associated with a normal body core temperature modulation.

Narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) is a sleep disorder caused by the loss of the hypothalamic neurons producing hypocretin. The clinical hallmarks of the disease are excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, other rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phenomena, and a fragmented wake-sleep cycle. Experimental data suggest that the hypocretin system is involved primarily in the circadian timing of sleep and wakefulness but also in the control of other biological functions such as thermoregulation. The object of this study was to determine the effects of the hypocretin deficit and of the wake-sleep cycle fr

Effects of alcohol on polysomnographically recorded sleep in healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: After studying the sleep of alcohol-dependent patients at the beginning and over the course of abstinence in earlier studies, our interest in the current study focused on the direct effect of 2 doses of alcohol [0.03 and 0.1% blood alcohol level (BAL)] on healthy sleep. This is the first polysomnographic study testing the impact of 2 doses of alcohol ingestion (thus reflecting "normal" social drinking and alcohol abuse) in a single-blind randomized design in healthy volunteers. The study evaluated a short-term acute drinking period for 3 and 2 days of withdrawal from alcohol not on
