Antibody Isotype and Subclass Responses in Human Patients With Different Clinical Presentations of Sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis diagnosis involves a series of analyses, including culture and antibody detection in serum samples. Serologic methods may sometimes yield false-negative or false-positive results, leading to inaccurate diagnoses. This study assessed specific patient groups in which antibody detection of different isotypes and subclasses may lack sensitivity. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with Sporothrix brasiliensis exoantigens was used to investigate IgM, IgG, IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, IgG4, IgA, IgA1 and IgA2 antibodies in human serum samples. Eighty serum samples from patients with dif

Francisella tularensis Infection Causing Parinaud Oculoglandular Syndrome.

BACKGROUND Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome is a unilateral granulomatous palpebral conjunctivitis associated with preauricular, submandibular, and cervical lymphadenopathies. Several infectious diseases can cause Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome, usually with a conjunctival entry. The most common underlying pathology is cat scratch disease, followed by the oculoglandular form of tularemia. Diagnosis is usually a serious challenge as these infections are themselves rare. On the other hand, Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome may be a rare manifestation of more common disorders (eg, tuberculosis,

Cellular and Molecular Defects Underlying Invasive Fungal Infections-Revelations from Endemic Mycoses.

The global burden of fungal diseases has been increasing, as a result of the expanding number of susceptible individuals including people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hematopoietic stem cell or organ transplant recipients, patients with malignancies or immunological conditions receiving immunosuppressive treatment, premature neonates, and the elderly. Opportunistic fungal pathogens such as Aspergillus, Candida, Cryptococcus, Rhizopus, and Pneumocystis jiroveci are distributed worldwide and constitute the majority of invasive fungal infections (IFIs). Dimorphic fungi such as

Dimorphic fungal osteoarticular infections.

The objective of this investigation was to review the clinical manifestations, management, and outcome of osteoarticular infections caused by dimorphic fungi. We exhaustively reviewed reports of bone and joint infections caused by dimorphic fungi published between 1970 and 2012. Underlying conditions, microbiological features, histological characteristics, clinical manifestations, antifungal therapy, and outcome were analyzed in 222 evaluable cases. Among 222 proven cases (median age 41 years [interquartile range (IQR) 26-57]), 73 % had no predisposing condition. Histopathology performed in 12

Terbinafine pharmacokinetics after single dose oral administration in the dog.

Terbinafine is an allylamine antifungal prescribed for the treatment of mycoses in humans. It is increasingly being used in veterinary patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetic properties of terbinafine in dogs after a single oral dose. Ten healthy adult dogs were included in the study. A single dose of terbinafine (30-35 mg/kg) was administered orally, and blood samples were periodically collected over a 24 h period during which dogs were monitored for adverse effects. Two of 10 dogs developed transient ocular changes. A high-performance liquid chromatography ass

Bibliometric assessment and key messages of sporotrichosis research (1945-2018).

Background: Sporotrichosis has recently emerged as an important mycosis worldwide, with diverse transmission and epidemiologic profiles. For instance, in Brazil most cases are related to zoonotic transmission from naturally infected cats, and the majority of cases in China are due to external injury with environmental materials. Publications on sporotrichosis and on its etiologic agent may guide the direction of the research in this field. It can also define priorities for future studies. Methods: In this study, we evaluated the trends of global research in Sporothrix and sporotrichosis, based

Clinical Manifestations, Antifungal Drug Susceptibility, and Treatment Outcomes for Emerging Zoonotic Cutaneous Sporotrichosis, Thailand.

We analyzed clinical manifestations, antifungal susceptibility, and treatment outcomes of cutaneous sporotrichosis in Thailand during 2018-2022. The study included 49 patients whose mean age was 58.7 (SD 16.9) years; 65.3% were female and 34.7% male. A history of cat exposure was reported in 32 (65.3%) patients who had a significantly higher prevalence of upper extremity lesions than did those without cat contact (90.6% vs. 41.7%; adjusted odds ratio 18.9 [95% CI 3.2-92.9]). Among patients >60 years of age, lesions were more likely to be nonpustular than for patients <60 years of age (82.1% vs

Sporotrichosis.

Forty-nine patients with culture-proven sporotrichosis were treated between 1957 and 1986. Infections were lymphocutaneous in 36 patients, pulmonary in two, intraarticular in four, and involved multiple deep tissues in seven. Thirty-six infections involved an upper extremity. Five patients with deep infection had some evidence of being immunocompromised. Delay in diagnosis after presentation averaged 4 months overall and 25 months for those with deep infection. Ten of 12 joint infections resulted in significant functional impairment. Treatment with saturated potassium iodide solution was effec

Generic boundaries in the Ophiostomatales reconsidered and revised.

The Ophiostomatales was erected in 1980. Since that time, several of the genera have been redefined and others have been described. There are currently 14 accepted genera in the Order. They include species that are the causal agents of plant and human diseases and common associates of insects such as bark beetles. Well known examples include the Dutch elm disease fungi and the causal agents of sporotrichosis in humans and animals. The taxonomy of the Ophiostomatales was confused for many years, mainly due to the convergent evolution of morphological characters used to delimit unrelated fungal
