Seizure risk in offspring of individuals with a history of febrile convulsions.

UNLABELLED: One-hundred and seventy-nine offspring of 120 probands with a history of febrile convulsions (FC) were studied to determine the risk of seizures and possible factors influencing this risk. The conditions for this study were especially good since all of the probands had undergone clinical and EEG examinations as well as an assessment of family history of seizures during childhood. Hence, for the first time the seizure status of the probands' parents could be included in the calculation of risk in offspring. In sibs the risk was highest if the mother of the proband had experienced se

[Adverse effects of branched chain amino acid transfusion on type-II citrullinemia--report of an adult case].

A 24-year-old man was admitted to our hospital, because two days before the admission he had abruptly lost consciousness following generalized convulsive seizures. He had a past history of transient amnesia and a favor for peanuts. His grandparents had a record of consanguinity. On admission, he was comatose and flaccid with his four extremities. Laboratory examination revealed the followings; mild degree of abnormal liver function, slight elevation of blood ammonia, irregular theta basic rhythm on EEG, marked brain edema on CT and a normal liver ultrasonography. From the second hospital day,

Supraspinal convulsions induced by inverse benzodiazepine agonists in rabbits.

The electroencephalographic (EEG) effects of inverse benzodiazepine (BDZ) agonists have been studied in rabbits after i.v. administration. A dose-dependent progression of three different stages of EEG changes have been observed with inverse BDZ agonists. At first, trains of slow waves in the occipital cortex occur, followed by trains of spike-and-wave complexes in the sensorimotor cortex. These two stages are superimposed on a desynchronized cortical activity, accompanied by an enhancement of the hippocampal theta rhythm. These EEG changes parallel a state of alertness. The third stage is char

Developmental plasticity after right hemispherectomy in an epileptic adolescent with early brain injury.

OBJECTIVES: The authors present the case of an adolescent affected with refractory epilepsy due to a neonatal ischemic infarction of the right medial cerebral artery. Hemiplegic since the first months of life, she began presenting motor partial seizures associated with drop attacks at 4.5 years; these were initially well controlled by antiepileptic drugs, but at 10 years seizures appeared again and became refractory. Thus, at 14 years and 10 months, she was submitted to a right hemispherectomy that made her rapidly seizure free. In the post-surgical follow-up lasting 5 years, neuropsychologica

Low-frequency anodal Transcranial pulsed current stimulation (0.5-5 Hz): effects on EEG band amplitude, interhemispheric coherence, and cognitive performance.

Transcranial pulsed current stimulation (tPCS) is a frequency-dependent neuromodulation technique. However, its mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined the effects of low-frequency (0.5, 1, 3, 5 Hz, and sham stimulation) anodal monophasic tPCS (a-tPCSM) on interhemispheric coherence, electroencephalography (EEG) band power, cognitive behaviours, and adverse effects. Seventeen healthy adults completed five sessions in a double-blinded, randomised, counterbalanced crossover design (2 mA stimulation for 20 min over M1) with a 48-hour washout period. Before and immediately after stimulation

Non-invasive versus invasive techniques for predicting idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus in shunt-responsive patients.

The diagnosis of normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) can be challenging, particularly distinguishing between shunt-responsive and non-responsive patients. Overlapping clinical symptoms with aging and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s may hinder its diagnosis. Thus, more effective diagnostic tools are necessary To compare non-invasive techniques, such as electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial Doppler (TCD), intracranial compliance (ICC) measurement, and optical coherence tomography (OCT), with invasive procedures, such as lumbar puncture (LP) and infusion tests

Evaluation of EEG oscillatory patterns and cognitive process during simple and compound limb motor imagery.

Motor imagery (MI), sharing similar neural representations to motor execution, is regarded as a window to investigate the cognitive motor processes. However, in comparison to simple limb motor imagery, significantly less work has been reported on brain oscillatory patterns induced by compound limb motor imagery which involves several parts of limbs. This study aims to investigate differences of the electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns as well as cognitive process between simple limb motor imagery and compound limb motor imagery. Ten subjects participated in the experiment involving three tasks

Creatine preserves mitochondrial integrity and ameliorates early epileptiform activity and cognitive impairment via regulation of Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase in adolescent rats with severe traumatic brain injury.

In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that post-injury creatine supplementation (300 mg/kg, p.o.) administered for two weeks attenuates blood-brain barrier disruption, cortical lesion volume (by ∼60%), spatial memory deficits (reducing escape latency by ∼50% in the Barnes maze), hippocampal theta/delta rhythm alterations, and epileptiform activity in 35-day-old male rats subjected to severe fluid percussion injury (FPI). In the hippocampus, the FPI protocol did not cause overt neuronal loss-particularly of parvalbumin-positive neurons in the CA1 and CA2 regions-but it significantly

Cerebellar Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation in the Theta Band Prevents Recall of the Initial Fear Association After Extinction Training.

Although the neural network underlying fear extinction has been extensively studied, the cerebellum's role has received little attention - despite its well-established involvement in associative learning. Our study therefore aimed to provide additional evidence that the cerebellum is part of the circuitry supporting fear-extinction processes, and to get a better understanding of how the cerebellum may contribute to fear extinction learning. In this study, 6 Hz cerebellar transcranial alternating current stimulation (ctACS) or sham stimulation was applied during extinction training in a two-day

The Important Role of the Right Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex in Conflict Adaptation: A Combined Voxel-Based Morphometry and Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation Study.

Humans can flexibly adjust their executive control to resolve conflicts. Conflict adaptation and conflict resolution are crucial aspects of conflict processing. Functional neuroimaging studies have associated the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) with conflict processing, but its causal role remains somewhat controversial. Moreover, the neuroanatomical basis of conflict processing has not been thoroughly examined. In this study, the Stroop task, a well-established measure of conflict, was employed to investigate (1) the neuroanatomical basis of conflict resolution and conflict adaptation

Impact of Priming on Effectiveness of TMS in Detecting Language-eloquent Brain Areas in Tumor Patients.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Language is characteristically human, and preserving it is critical when resecting tumors in language-eloquent brain areas. Navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (nrTMS) has been used in recent years as a noninvasive technique to identify preoperatively the language-eloquent cortical areas in tumor patients. An important objective is to increase the sensitivity and specificity of nrTMS in detecting language-related areas and increase the positive correlation of its results to that of intraoperative direct cortical stimulation (DCS). Although the tech

Role of the right temporoparietal junction in intergroup bias in trust decisions.

Intergroup bias, which is the tendency to behave more positively toward an in-group member than toward an out-group member, is pervasive in real life. In particular, intergroup bias in trust decisions substantially influences multiple areas of life and thus better understanding of this tendency can provide significant insights into human social behavior. Although previous functional magnetic resonance imaging studies showed the involvement of the right temporoparietal junction (TPJ) in intergroup trust bias, a causal relationship between the two has rarely been explored. By combining repetitiv

Safety and Efficacy of Adjunctive Θ Burst Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to Right Inferior Parietal Lobule in Schizophrenia Patients With First-Rank Symptoms: A Pilot, Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: First-rank symptoms (FRS) in schizophrenia have been found to be associated with various cognitive and biological markers. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been shown to modulate such factors. We hypothesized that rTMS adjunctive to antipsychotics will be safe and effective in treatment of FRS in schizophrenia. METHODS: Schizophrenia patients with FRS randomly received either active or sham-magnetic resonance imaging navigated continuous Θ burst stimulation (cTBS)-rTMS to right inferior parietal lobule for 2 weeks; assessments were repeated. While primary ou

Theta-band functional connectivity in the dorsal fronto-parietal network predicts goal-directed attention.

Functional imaging studies have identified a dorsal fronto-parietal network whose activity reflects shifts of attention in space and is sensitive to the behavioural relevance of stimuli. In patients with severe deficits of spatial attention this network is often structurally preserved. Here, we show that resting-state EEG functional connectivity in the dorsal fronto-parietal network predicts impaired goal-directed processing in stroke patients with spatial attention deficits. Eleven right-hemisphere damaged patients with different degrees of contralesional spatial deficits and sixteen age-matc

Frontal-posterior theta oscillations reflect memory retrieval during sentence comprehension.

Successful working-memory retrieval requires that items be retained as distinct units. At the neural level, it has been shown that theta-band oscillatory power increases with the number of to-be-distinguished items during working-memory retrieval. Here we hypothesized that during sentence comprehension, verbal-working-memory retrieval demands lead to increased theta power over frontal cortex, supposedly supporting the distinction amongst stored items during verbal-working-memory retrieval. Also, synchronicity may increase between the frontal cortex and the posterior cortex, with the latter sup

The study on the frontoparietal networks by continuous theta burst stimulation in healthy human subjects.

Frontoparietal networks (FPNs) including the regions of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) have been implicated in visuospatial attention. However, the functional interactions among different regions of dorsal FPNs remain elusive. The Attention Network Test (ANT) and continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) were used to investigate the functional interactions in healthy subjects. During the ANT task, subjects receiving right PPC cTBS responded significantly slower in spatial cue condition, had deficits in both alerting and orienting indices compared

Theta oscillations during the processing of monetary loss and gain: a perspective on gender and impulsivity.

Event-related oscillations (EROs) have proved to be very useful in the understanding of a variety of neurocognitive processes including reward/outcome processing. In the present study, theta power (4.0-7.0 Hz) following outcome stimuli in the time window of the N2-P3 complex (200-500 ms) was analyzed in healthy normals (20 males and 20 females) while performing a gambling task that involved monetary loss and gain. The main aim was to analyze outcome processing in terms of event-related theta power in the context of valence, amount, gender, and impulsivity. The S-transform was used for the sign

Gamma oscillations induced by kainate receptor activation in the entorhinal cortex in vitro.

Gamma frequency (30-80 Hz) oscillations are recordable from human and rodent entorhinal cortex. A number of mechanisms used by neuronal networks to generate such oscillations in the hippocampus have been characterized. However, it is as yet unclear as to whether these mechanisms apply to other anatomically disparate brain regions. Here we show that the medial entorhinal cortex (mEC) in isolation in vitro generates gamma frequency oscillations in response to kainate receptor agonists. Oscillations had the same horizontal and laminar spatiotemporal distribution as seen in vivo and in the isolate
