Prenatal Diagnosis and Perinatal Outcomes of Posterior Fossa Anomalies in a Tertiary Referral Center: A Five-Year Experience.

Background and Objectives: Posterior fossa anomalies (PFAs) represent a heterogeneous group of congenital malformations involving the cerebellum and adjacent structures. Prenatal counseling remains challenging because neurodevelopmental outcomes vary substantially according to the specific anomaly. This study aimed to evaluate ultrasonographic and fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics, associated anomalies, genetic test results, and perinatal and neurodevelopmental outcomes of prenatally diagnosed PFAs in a tertiary care population. Materials and Methods: This retrospective st

Air pollution and fetal brain morphological development: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There is a scarcity of evidence of the influence of exposure to air pollution during pregnancy on the human fetal brain characterised prenatally. We aimed to evaluate the association of exposure to air pollution with fetal brain morphology. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, we used data from the Barcelona Life Study Cohort, Spain, which recruited 1080 pregnant women at 8-14 weeks of gestation between Oct 16, 2018, and April 14, 2021, from three major university hospitals in Barcelona. Eligible participants were aged 18-45 years, had a singleton pregnancy, and had a fetus

Metabolic response in blood and cerebrospinal fluid during feed restriction: Identification of potential metabolic signals associated with individual feed intake rebound.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of feed restriction and refeeding on metabolic and AA profiles in blood serum, and on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) profiles during the feed restriction period, using a controlled feeding model. Additionally, the study aims to identify metabolic signals generated during feed restriction that may help explain individual variability in the feed intake recovery. Following 2 wk of adaptation, 8 primiparous Holstein cows housed in individual stalls with free access to water were fed ad libitum for 5 d (basal period), followed by 50% feed restriction for

POLR3A rare variants in a patient with intellectual disability, ataxic gait and cortical malformations: a case-report.

BACKGROUND: Recessive mutations in POLR3A exhibit considerable phenotypic diversity, spanning from severe childhood-onset hypomyelinating leukodystrophic syndrome to less severe gait disorders, which may present later in life and may be accompanied by additional non-neurological symptoms. In this study, we report a new case of rare POLR3A variants in a 6-year-old female patient sharing common genetic and neuropsychological profiles of POLR3-related disorders, although without revealing the classic MRI phenotype and severe clinical signs of POLR3-related leukodystrophy, such as diffuse hypomyel

Neuroanatomical Features of NAA10- and NAA15-Related Neurodevelopmental Syndromes.

BACKGROUND: NAA10-related (Ogden Syndrome) and NAA15-related neurodevelopmental syndromes present with varying degrees of intellectual disability, hypotonia, congenital cardiac abnormalities, seizures, and delayed speech and motor development. While there is much data on the clinical manifestations of these conditions, there are few radiologic reports describing the neuroanatomical abnormalities present on imaging. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to provide neuroimaging analyses for a subset of probands with NAA10- and NAA15-related neurodevelopmental symptoms and assess severity, common radiologic a

The cervical lymph node contributes to peripheral inflammation related to Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral inflammation is an important feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, if and how CNS pathology is involved in the peripheral inflammation in PD remains to be fully investigated. Recently, the existence of meningeal lymphatics and its involvement in draining cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) to the cervical lymph node has been discovered. It is known that meningeal lymphatic dysfunction exists in idiopathic PD. The deep cervical lymph node (dCLN) substantially contributes to the drainage of the meningeal lymphatics. In addition, one of the lymphatics draining components, C

Altered dynamics of glymphatic flow in a mature-onset Tet-off APP mouse model of amyloidosis.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder characterised by the progressive buildup of toxic amyloid-beta (Aβ) and tau protein aggregates eventually leading to cognitive decline. Recent lines of evidence suggest that an impairment of the glymphatic system (GS), a brain waste clearance pathway, plays a key role in the pathology of AD. Moreover, a relationship between GS function and neuronal network integrity has been strongly implicated. Here, we sought to assess the efficacy of the GS in a transgenic Tet-Off APP mouse model of amyloidosis, in which the exp

Coexistance of cerebral sinovenous thrombosis and Dandy Walker malformation in newborn.

Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis in neonatal period may cause neurological impairment, epilepsy, and lead to stroke. It is caused primarily by coagulopathy of numerous reasons, occasionally perinatal asphyxia, traumatic delivery and hyperhomocysteinemia. Dandy-Walker malformation is characterized by agenesis or hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, and enlargement of the posterior fossa. Dandy-Walker malformation, variant, and mega cisterna magna represent a spectrum of developmental anomalies. Insults to developing cerebellar hemispheres and the fourth

[MRI in congenital nystagmus].

INTRODUCTION: Congenital nystagmus (CN) that is present by the age of 3 months is the most common form of nystagmus in childhood. We present a prospective study (2001-2008) in which we report imaging findings in 48 children with CN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six boys and 22 girls with CN underwent a complete ophthalmologic assessment and a cerebral MRI (mean age of examination under general anesthesia: 11 months). Three CN groups were formed: neurologic (n=27), sensory visual disturbance (n=14), and isolated (n=7). Cerebral MRI was interpreted by the same pediatric neuroradiologist (NG).

Spinal cord stimulation and early experimental cerebral spasm: the "functional monitoring" and the "preventing effect".

BACKGROUND: Clinical and experimental data on cerebral blood flow (CBF) changes during spinal cord stimulation (SCS) were published since 1986. The aims of the present work are: 1. To find an experimental model of reliable, simple and in vivo monitoring of "early" basilar artery spasm after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) and 2. To investigate the effects of cervical spinal cord stimulation (CSCS) on it. Vasospasm due to SAH is both "acute" and "recurrent". Early spasm occurs within minutes of the SAH. its duration is approximately 1 hour. The need of different morphological and haemodynamic me

Systemic administration of mexiletine for attenuation of cerebral vasospasm following experimental subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Mexiletine is a class Ib drug that is widely used to treat ventricular arrhythmias. This compound is mainly known as a sodium channel blocker, but studies have demonstrated that it can also activate ATP-sensitive K+ channels and block Ca2+ channels. Recent in vitro data from experiments on liposomes indicate that mexiletine is also a potent antioxidant. The unique activity profile of this drug raised the possibility that it might be of benefit in limiting cerebral vasospasm. Our first series of experiments assessed the effects of mexiletine on transclivally exposed rabbit basilar arteries. The

The effects of convective cooling and rewarming on systemic and central nervous system physiology in isoflurane-anesthetized dogs.

Recent studies have demonstrated that small (i.e., 2-5 degrees C) reductions in temperature may protect the brain and spinal cord from ischemic injury. The present study evaluated the physiologic response of anesthetized animals to convective-based cooling and warming. Six shaved, isoflurane-anesthetized (1.50% end-expired; 1 MAC), pancuronium-paralyzed dogs were subjected to temperature manipulation. The flow of cool (13-14 degrees C) or warm (39-41 degrees C) air was uniformly applied to the the dorsal and lateral surfaces of the dog using an inflatable blanket with perforations in the inter

Posterior fossa reconstruction: a surgical technique for the treatment of Chiari I malformation and Chiari I/syringomyelia complex--preliminary results and magnetic resonance imaging quantitative assessment of hindbrain migration.

Experimental models have shown that Chiari I malformation is a primary paraaxial mesodermal insufficiency occurring after the closure of the neural folds takes place. According to these hypotheses, a small posterior fossa caused by an underdeveloped occipital bone would be the primary factor in the formation of the hindbrain hernia. The main objective in the surgical treatment of Chiari I malformation and related syringomyelia is directed to restore normal cerebrospinal fluid dynamics at the craniovertebral junction. The most widely accepted surgical approach is to perform a craniovertebral de

Pharmacological, hemodynamic and autonomic nervous system mechanisms responsible for the blood pressure and heart rate lowering effects of pergolide in rats.

In conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats, pergolide (50.0 micrograms/kg s.c.) produced a sustained decrease in tail artery pressure which was blocked by haloperidol (1.0 mg/kg s.c.) pretreatment. In anesthetized spontaneously hypertensive rats this effect was accompanied by a fall in total peripheral resistance inasmuch as pergolide did not significantly change cardiac output. In anesthetized normotensive rats, pergolide (30.0 micrograms/kg i.v.) also lowered blood pressure. This effect was not significantly modified by adrenalectomy, methysergide, idazoxan (alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist

Acute cardiorespiratory effects of intracisternal injections of mercuric chloride.

The present studies were conducted to changes arising from mercury poisoning in the central nervous system (CNS), with a focus on determining the receptors and neurotransmitters involved. Currently, little is known regarding the neurological basis of the cardiopulmonary effects of mercury poisoning. We evaluated changes in systolic arterial pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), respiratory rate (RR) and heart rate (HR) following a 5 μl intracisternal (i.c) injection of mercuric chloride (HgCl(2)) and the participation of the autonomic nervous system in these responses. 58 animals

Quantitative analysis of radioisotope cisternography in the diagnosis of intracranial hypotension.

OBJECT: The authors attempted a quantitative analysis of conventional radioisotope cisternography for the purpose of more accurate diagnosis of intracranial hypotension. METHODS: Fifty-seven patients suspected of having intracranial hypotension underwent radioisotope cisternography. Whole-body images were obtained 2.5, 6, and 24 hours after intrathecal injection of 111In-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid. Radioactivity in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) space was counted during scanning, and radioisotope clearance was studied. Direct signs of radioisotope leakage into the spinal epidural spac
