PURPOSE: To characterize the clinical and biologic features of extragonadal germ cell tumor (EGCT) and to determine the overall outcome with currently available treatment strategies.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of an unselected population of 635 consecutive patients treated from 1975 through 1996 at 11 cancer centers, 341 patients (54%) had primary mediastinal EGCT, and 283 patients (45%) had retroperitoneal EGCT. Five hundred twenty-four patients (83%) had a nonseminomatous germ cell tumor (GCT), and 104 patients (16%) had a seminomatous histology.

PURPOSE: Prognostic factors were studied in children older than 1 year who were treated with chemotherapy for extracranial localized malignant non seminomatous germ cell tumors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from two consecutive protocols were pooled. The TGM 85 (1985-1989) protocol consisted of alternating courses of cyclophosphamide, dactinomycin and vinblastine, bleomycin, and cisplatin at a dose of 100 mg/m(2) per course. The TGM 90 (1990-1994) protocol was initiated with carboplatin 400 mg/m(2) substituted for cisplatin as the only modification to the previous protocol.

We present here a case of prominent hypercalcemia accompanied by hypothalamic tumor and Graves' disease. Contralateral biopsies from 1810 consecutive patients with testicular germ-cell tumor were examined immunohistologically by staining for placental alkaline phosphatase. Contralateral testicular intraepithelial neoplasia (TIN; carcinoma in situ) was found in 89 patients (4.9%; 95% confidence interval, 3.9%-5.9%). BACKGROUND: To investigate the efficacy and toxicity of the combination of gemcitabine and oxaliplatin (GEMOX) in patients with relapsed or cisplatin-refractory non-seminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCT).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with relapsed or cisplatin-refractory NSGCT were treated with gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8 followed by oxaliplatin 130 mg/m2 on day 1 every 3 weeks for a maximum of six cycles. Twenty-four patients (83%) were considered refractory and five (17%) absolutely refractory to cisplatin.
