A numerical model (Queen's University Multi-Phase Flow Simulator, QUMPFS) was used to assess the rate of trichloroethylene (TCE) dense, non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) migration through fractured clay, with special attention focused on the influence of interbedded sand lenses. The presence of these sand lenses was found to increase the time required for the non-wetting phase to migrate through the full 30 m vertical extent of the clay sequence from a few days to several years. Applied vertical hydraulic gradients were found to be moderately influential in systems consisting solely of fracture

Dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) are immiscible with water and can give rise to highly fingered fluid distributions when infiltrating through water-saturated porous media. In this paper, a conceptual mobile-immobile-zone (MIZ) model is presented to describe the structure of a DNAPL finger in water-saturated porous media and the velocity of finger propagation. A finger is composed of a finger body and a tip. The finger body has a mobile core and an immobile sheath. All the DNAPL within the tip of a finger is mobile. Lab experiments utilizing image analyses of a DNAPL (PCE) penetrating in

Previous studies have revealed the presence of pore-scale variability in diffusivity in the Culebra (dolomite) member of the Rustler Formation, NM. In this study, eight laboratory-scale diffusion experiments on five Culebra samples were analyzed using a methodology for modeling solute diffusion through porous media in the presence of multiple matrix diffusivities, Dp. A lognormal distribution of Dp is assumed within each of the lab samples. The estimated standard deviation (sigma d) of ln(Dp) within each sample ranges from 0 to 1, with most values lying between 0.5 and 1. The variability over

In natural subsurface systems, Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) is a potent reducing agent, as it sustains and catalyzes a number of microbially-mediated reactions. One of such reactions, namely the reduction of sulfate to sulfide mediated by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is particularly relevant for the evaluation of the long-term stability of deep geological repositories (DGRs) for spent nuclear fuel. Some of these proposed DGRs will be hosted at great depth in fractured crystalline rocks where sulfide, potentially produced by SRB, is practically the only oxidant of relevance for the copper

The geological disposal of radioactive waste is under investigation in several countries, especially in Europe. In this field, clay-rich sedimentary rocks are promising natural barriers to limit and delay the release of radionuclides toward the biosphere, due to their diffusion-driven transport and retention properties. In addition to laboratory studies, field studies in Underground Research Laboratories (URL) represent a significant value to strengthen safety demonstrations. In this context, the DIR experiment (Diffusion of Inert and Reactive tracers) was developed and implanted in the Meuse/

The role of microbial communities in regulating the transport and retention of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the subsurface environment, particularly under water-unsaturated conditions, remains poorly understood. Here, miscible-displacement experiments were conducted with saturated and unsaturated sand-packed columns to investigate the influence of biofilms on the transport of 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS), considering biofilm age, bacterial species, and flow rate. The underlying mechanisms were further elucidated through characterization of extracellular polymeric subs

Reactive fronts form at interfaces where remediation agents encounter contaminant plumes in subsurface environments. The contaminant degradation is largely confined to this narrow mixing zone, but the transient reaction dynamics within it remain poorly understood. Existing models often assume uniform flow or constant dispersion, failing to capture how the spatial deceleration of radial velocities alters interfacial mixing. To address this, two-dimensional sandbox experiments were conducted by radially injecting potassium permanganate into a Naphthol Green B-dyed perchloroethylene (PCE) plume.

Groundwater circulation well (GCW) can effectively control the migration and diffusion of organic contaminants in aquifer through hydraulic driving force. However, its poor direct removal capacity for contaminants restricts the engineering application of GCW. To address this issue, this study coupled GCW with FeC microelectrolysis to enhance the removal of nitrobenzene. Experimental results demonstrated that the FeC microelectrolysis system simultaneously generates hydroxyl radical (•OH) and hydrogen radical (H•), leading to two degradation pathways for nitrobenzene: oxidative pathway and redu

The continuing struggle to reduce greenhouse gas emissions continues to be one of the most crucial obstacles in achieving both energy efficiency and sustainable, long-term environmental practices. Microporous metal azolate framework-4 nanoparticles (MAF-4 NPs) have emerged as attractive adsorbent materials with their large surface area, adjustable pore architecture, and high chemical stability. Herein we present a green and rapid synthesis of ultramicroporous MAF-4 nanoparticles via the production of no organic solvents through the use of minimal external heating. The resulting MAF-4 NPs (part

Large-scale application of biochar (BC) has been considered as an effective strategy for carbon sequestration, soil quality improvement, and water/soil remediation. Once introduced into soils, BC can disintegrate or fragment through physical, chemical and biological processes, resulting in the formation of BC colloids (BCCs) with particle size ranging from 1 to 1000 nm. Due to the small size, large surface area, and high surface activity, BCCs exhibit stronger colloidal stability in aquatic environments and higher mobility in porous media than the bulk BC particles. In particular, BCCs have mu

In this study, sludge biochar was prepared via the co-pyrolysis method using the compatibility of sewage sludge (SS) in different seasons with organic medical solid waste (OMSW) and activated by alkali conditions for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in water with different pH values. The maximum adsorption capacity of the two biochars (KS1MBC and KS2MBC) reached 83.49 mg/g and 86.19 mg/g, respectively. The structure of the biochars was characterized via XRD, BET and SEM, and the adsorption mechanism of the biochars was investigated by FTIR, Raman, and XPS. The adsorption processes of the mod

Groundwater contamination has gained attention due to its association with chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) in agricultural regions of Sri Lanka. Beyond dissolved transport, colloid-facilitated transport (CFT) can significantly enhance the mobility of strongly sorbing heavy metals in soils and groundwater. However, few studies have systematically integrated experimental investigation and numerical modelling to evaluate in-situ colloid mobilization and CFT under environmentally relevant hydro-chemical conditions. This study investigated the transport of Cd and Pb in saturated s

Anthropogenic nitrogen loading and hydrodynamic exchange jointly regulate nitrate distributions in open coastal waters, complicating source attribution based on concentration or isotope patterns alone. This study investigated nitrate sources and processing in the coastal waters of Wenzhou, East China Sea, using hydrochemical parameters, δ15N-NO₃-, δ18O-NO₃-, δ15N-NH₄+, conservative water-mass mixing analysis, and MixSIAR. A pronounced estuarine-to-offshore environmental gradient was observed. Most nitrate concentration and isotope observations were consistent with conservative mixing among ter

Accurate prediction of state variables in multi-well pumping systems (MWPS) is critical for real-time management of groundwater-related operations, yet remains challenging under complex hydrogeological conditions and limited observational data. This study presents a lightweight CNN-LSTM model integrated with transfer learning for short-term but high-accuracy prediction of MWPS dynamics. The framework is evaluated using field data from an in-situ uranium leaching aquifer (China), where pumping rates from 42 wells are used to predict the uranium concentrations in the mixed solution recovered fro

Under the context of global climate change, increasingly frequent heatwaves and wildfires subject near-surface soils to substantial thermal disturbance. Microplastics, as emerging persistent pollutants, are ubiquitous in agricultural and urban soils as well as aeolian deposits; their melting, pyrolysis, and carbonization at elevated temperatures can markedly alter soil pore structure and connectivity. In this study, Quaternary Malan loess from Shaanxi Province, China, was used as the test material. A series of experiments was conducted by varying polyethylene microplastic contents (1%, 3%, 4%,

Shallow urban lakes are prone to hydrodynamic stagnation due to limited water exchange, rendering them highly susceptible to eutrophication and algal blooms However, for small urban lakes with weak hydrodynamics, key knowledge gaps remain: whether water diversion can disrupt stagnant zones, what critical flow rate is required to suppress algae, and which regions are most suitable for submerged macrophyte restoration. Focusing on Lianshi Lake-a small shallow urban lake in North China-this study developed a coupled hydrodynamic-water quality-ecology model based on the Environmental Fluid Dynamic

Railway operations have long relied on herbicides to keep tracks free of vegetation and ensure safety and track stability. In Germany, regulatory changes introduced in 2020 have increased concern about the long-term environmental effects of herbicide use along railway corridors. This study examines the fate and transport of glyphosate, its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), flumioxazin, and flazasulfuron beneath railway embankments using HYDRUS-2D simulations and field monitoring data from five German sites. Simulations were carried out under identical application scenarios, focusin

The transport of pathogens through porous rocks is often regarded as a negligible process unless fractures are present within the medium. However, sedimentary porous rocks may have porosity that is capable of allowing the migration of pathogens through them even if there are no fractures. In this work, we investigated the transport behavior of pathogens (namely Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis) through a sedimentary porous rock containing calcite (CaCO3). Core-flooding experiments were performed under saturated conditions and variable head; the flow was continuously monitored, togeth

Due to the dense structure and low permeability of saline-alkali soils with high clay content, the vertical migration of water and salt within the soil profile is severely restricted, posing considerable difficulties for saline-alkali land amelioration. To address the aforementioned deficiencies of shallow saline-alkali soils, this study proposes directly incorporating river sand with a specific particle size gradation into the shallow layer of saline soil to reconstruct the soil skeleton and improve pore connectivity. Through laboratory soil column leaching tests and direct shear tests, the i

Fulvic acid (FA), a highly reactive and soluble fraction of dissolved organic matter in cultivated soils, facilitates the formation of stable colloids through complexation with iron (Fe), thereby significantly modulating the environmental mobility of arsenic (As). However, the migration behavior of As associated with FA-Fe colloids in porous media remains insufficiently characterized, particularly regarding the integration of coupled migration processes with quantitative modeling. This study investigated colloid-mediated As(III) migration in saturated porous media using column experiments and
