BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal disease caused by dimorphic fungi is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Super-bioavailability itraconazole (SUBA-itra) is a novel antifungal agent with pharmacokinetic advantages over currently available formulations. In this prospective comparative study, we report the outcomes of patients with endemic fungal infections (histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, and sporotrichosis).
METHODS: This open-label randomized trial evaluated the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics SUBA-itra compared with conventional itraconazole (c-itra) tre

A total of 165 sporotrichosis cases occurring in Nagasaki prefecture, and examined at Nagasaki University Hospital, were evaluated. Both males and females were equally affected, with no significant differences in the affected body regions. Lesions were frequently seen on the face (49 cases, 29.5%) and upper limbs (101 cases, 60.9%). The localised cutaneous type of sporotrichosis (105 cases, 62.9%) was much more frequent than the lymphocutaneous type (62 cases, 37.1%). The infection rate in patients over 50 years of age was 73.1%. The most frequent occupation among the patients was farming (52

A sporotichosis epidemic involving forty-four dogs in the Metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro is described. Solitary skin lesions were noted in 18 dogs (40.9%), 2-4 such lesions were observed in 17 animals (38.6%), and nine (20.5%) animals had five or more lesions. Twenty-five (56.8%) animals had single ulcerated skin lesions on the nose and nine (20.5%) showed nasal mucosal involvement (three of which also has a skin lesion). Respiratory symptoms were observed in 17 (38.6%) dogs and were found to be the most common extracutaneous signs of infection. Anemia, leukocytosis with neutrophilia, hyp

A retrospective analysis of all cases of sporotrichosis was conducted to examine the pattern and frequency of sporotrichosis cases in Manipur over a period of six year from July 1999 to June 2005. Seventy-three (73) cases of sporotrichosis were detected of which 30 were confirmed by culture and 43 were diagnosed by aspiration cytology only. Most of the patients belonged to the age group of 21 to 40 years (n = 23; 31.5%). There were 39 females (53.4%) and 34 males (46.5%). Commonest site of infection was upper limbs (n = 39; 53.4%) followed by lower limbs (n = 17; 23.2%). Commonest type of infe

Pulmonary infections by Sporothrix spp. manifest radiologically as cavitary or non-cavitary disease depending on whether the infection is primary pulmonary or multifocal sporotrichosis. Despite current guidelines, the optimal management for pulmonary sporotrichosis remains unclear. In order to clarify this, we present two cases of pulmonary sporotrichosis, as well as the results of a comprehensive literature review of treatment outcomes based on clinico-radiological presentation patterns of the disease. A literature search of all case reports in English language over the last 50 years (1960-20

Pathogenic fungi that exhibit the ability to alternate between hyphal and yeast morphology in response to environmental stimuli are considered dimorphic. Under saprobic conditions, some fungi exist as filamentous hyphae, producing conidia. When conidia are inhaled by mammals or traumatically inoculated, body temperature (37 °C) triggers dimorphism into yeast cells. This shift promotes fungal dissemination and immune evasion. Some fungal pathogens undergo dimorphism in the contrary way, forming pseudohyphae and hyphae within the host. While temperature is a major driver of dimorphism, other fac

Opportunistic and endemic mycoses represent a significant global health concern, particularly in Brazil. In the northeastern state of Pernambuco (PE), sporotrichosis has become a rapidly escalating public health challenge, evidenced by a notable increase in hospital admissions, despite its mostly outpatient nature. The present study, therefore, aimed to investigate the epidemiological and clinical profile of mycosis-related hospitalizations in PE from 2016 to 2024, with a primary focus on the burden of sporotrichosis. This statewide surveillance study used data from Brazil's Unified Health Sys

Human fungal infections remain a major challenge in medicine. Only a limited number of antifungal drugs are available, which are often related to severe adverse effects. In addition, there is an increased emergence related to resistant strains, which makes imperative to understand the host-pathogen interactions as well as to develop alternative treatments. Host innate and adaptive immunity play a crucial role controlling fungal infections; therefore, vaccines are a viable tool to prevent and treat fungal pathogens. Innate immunity is triggered by the interaction between the cell surface patter

Sporotrichosis is a chronic subcutaneous mycosis that affects both humans and animals worldwide. This subcutaneous mycosis had been attributed to a single etiological agent, Sporothrix schenckii. S. schenckii exhibits considerable genetic variability, and recently, it was suggested that this taxon consists of a complex of species. Sporotrichosis is caused by traumatic inoculation of the fungus, which is a ubiquitous environmental saprophyte that can be isolated from soil and plant debris. The infection is limited to cutaneous forms, but recently, more severe clinical forms of this mycosis have

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a zoonotic fungal infection caused by Sporothrix species and is a growing concern in feline populations due to its potential for transmission to humans. In Thailand, data on the incidence and associated risk factors remain limited, particularly in urban areas such as Bangkok.
AIM: To investigate the incidence and potential risk factors of feline sporotrichosis in Thonburi District, Bangkok, Thailand, from 2018 to 2024.
METHODS: A retrospective review of clinical records was conducted at a veterinary clinic in Thonburi. Among the 1,030 cats examined, 22 cases of

BACKGROUND: While metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has been acknowledged as a valuable diagnostic tool for infections, its clinical validity and impact on patient management when using fresh tissue samples remains uncertain.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study involving patients who underwent tissue mNGS at a tertiary hospital in China from February 2021 to February 2024, aiming to assess its ability to detect plausible pathogens and its clinical validity and impact.
FINDINGS: A total of 520 mNGS results from 508 patients were analysed, detecting plausibl

BACKGROUND: Tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) is a disease of skin and/or mucosal tissues caused by Leishmania parasites. TL patients may concurrently carry other pathogens, which may influence the clinical outcome of TL.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This review focuses on the frequency of TL coinfections in human populations, interactions between Leishmania and other pathogens in animal models and human subjects, and implications of TL coinfections for clinical practice. For the purpose of this review, TL is defined as all forms of cutaneous (localised, disseminated, or diffuse) and muco

Feline sporotrichosis has emerged as an important urban zoonosis in Brazil and is characterized by a heterogeneous territorial distribution in endemic regions. Environmental disruptions may alter animal mobility, environmental exposure, and surveillance dynamics, potentially influencing patterns of disease detection. This study investigated the epidemiological characteristics and spatiotemporal distribution of feline sporotrichosis in the municipality of Guaíba, southern Brazil, during a surveillance period that included a major flooding event. An observational analytical study was conducted u

This study analyzed the infection of superficial mycosis and the relationship between the distribution characteristics of pathogenic fungi and age, time and sex in Northeast China in the past 10 years. We would like to provide a theoretical basis for the diagnosis and treatment of related diseases. From December 2008 to December 2018, 5,374 superficial mycoses from Northeast China were selected. The fungal species were identified by fungal microscopy, fungal culture, and species identification. Besides, the relationship between sex, age, time and the distribution of superficial mycosis and pat
