One hundred and seventy-three IMZ two-stage implants have been clinically and radiologically evaluated for a 5 year period. The implants were placed in the anterior region of the maxillae of 81 patients to replace lost incisors, cuspids and bicuspids. The implants were placed 3 months or later after loss of natural anterior teeth when the resorption was already in an advanced stage. The implants used in this study consisted of titanium coated with hydroxylapatite. The prosthetic restorations placed on the implants consisted of fixed or removable partial dentures and single crowns. The cumulati

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) dental polymers exhibit superior mechanical properties compared to conventional ones, but their biocompatibility remains controversial. This study aimed to systematically compare in vivo biocompatibility of conventional and CAD/CAM dental polymers using a golden hamster model.
METHODS: Six dental polymers were evaluated: conventional (VAR) and CAD/CAM (OP) polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) denture base materials; conventional bis-acrylic (PT) and CAD/CAM PMMA (DM) interim restorative materials; pressed (PB) and CA

OBJECTIVES: To test if a novel dual-phase gel system (calcium silicate and phosphate with 1450 ppmF, as NaF/MFP; TG) combined with a toothpaste (calcium silicate and sodium phosphate with 1450 ppmF, as MFP; TG) was able to re-harden previously acid-challenged enamel to a greater extent than other toothpastes.
METHODS: The study consisted of a double-blind, randomised, cross-over design with four 7-day treatment legs. In each leg, subjects wearing a partial denture holding four demineralised enamel specimens (25 min in 0.3% citric acid, pH3.8) used either the test regimen (TG+TP) or one of the

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether 5 × 5 mm dental implants with a novel nanostructured calciumincorporated titanium surface could be an alternative to implants at least 10 mm long placed in bone augmented with bone substitutes in posterior atrophic jaws.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 40 patients with atrophic posterior (premolar and molar areas) mandibles having 5 to 7 mm of bone height above the mandibular canal and 40 patients with atrophic maxillae having 4 to 6 mm below the maxillary sinus, were randomised according to a parallel group design to receive one to three 5 mm implants or one to

Insertion of endosseous implants in the atrophic maxilla is often complicated because of lack of supporting bone. Augmentation of the floor of the maxillary sinus with autogenous bone graft has been proven to be a reliable treatment modality, at least in the short term. The long-term clinical and radiographic outcome with regard to the grafts, the implants and satisfaction of the patients with their implant-supported overdenture was studied in 99 patients. The sinus floor was augmented with bone grafts derived from the iliac crest (83 subjects, 162 sinuses, 353 implants), the mandibular symphy

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Oral health of older adults in nursing homes is poor, which can negatively affect general health and well-being. Most oral health problems are preventable with good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. Caregivers can help improve residents' oral health through regular oral health assessments. The interRAI instrument used in Long-Term Care Facilities to evaluate older adults' health and well-being, has the potential to integrate oral care into general care planning. The recently optimized Oral Health Section for inclusion in the interRAI instruments (OHS-interRA

BACKGROUND: The urban low income has often been assumed to have the greatest dental treatment needs compared to the general population. However, no studies have been carried out to verify these assumptions. This study was conducted to assess whether there was any difference between the treatment needs of an urban poor population as compared to the general population in order to design an intervention programme for this community.
METHODS: A random sampling of living quarters (households) in the selected areas was done. 586 adults over 19 years old living in these households were clinically ex

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: While surgical restoration of mandibular resections has advanced dramatically with free-flap techniques, oral function and patient perceptions of function, as well as treatment outcomes, often indicate significant impairment.
PURPOSE: This longitudinal prospective study was designed to determine whether conventional prostheses (CP) or implant-supported prostheses (IP) and current surgical reconstructive procedures restore patients' oral functions and quality of life to their status prior to segmental mandibulectomy with immediate fibula free-flap reconstruction. OBJECTIVE: To compare framework passive fit, subjective evaluations, and short-term clinical outcomes between conventional impressions (CI) and intraoral scanning (IOS) for complete-arch implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (CIFDPs).
METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 22 patients were allocated to the CI or IOS groups. All participants received a definitive one-piece CIFDP. The primary outcome was framework passive fit, assessed using the Vision and Tactile Score (V&T score), which included framework lift-off, the single-screw test, the full-screw test, smoothness of screw ins

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the concept of intra-oral welding as a suitable technique for the fabrication of a restoration for edentulous mandibles on the same day as surgery using tapered connection implants.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Each of 20 patients had an edentulous mandible and received four inter-foraminal, tapered connection implants. All implants were immediately loaded with a fixed restoration supported by an intra-orally welded titanium framework. Final abutments were connected to the implants and then a titanium bar was welded to them using an intra

PURPOSE: To determine the clinical and radiological outcomes of hybrid-design- (HD) and bone-level (BL) implants for bar-retained mandibular implant-overdentures (IODs).
METHODS: For this retrospective study, edentulous patients who had received maxillary complete dentures and mandibular bar-retained IODs were invited for a follow-up assessment. Implant survival, implant success and health of peri-implant tissues were assessed on an implant level-based analysis. Patient-based parameters served to identify risk factors for peri-implant bone loss, presence of peri-implantitis and success.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to in-vitro evaluate the mode of failure of abutments supporting fixed partial dentures (FPDs) via different retention techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six implants with diameter and length of 4.5 and 13 mm, respectively, were used to prepare 18 samples of FPDs. Based on the variations on abutment's design, the FPDs were divided into three groups: Group A is cement-based retention; Group B is screw-based retention; and Group C is multiunit screw-based retention. Using a chewing simulator, cyclic loads of 1,250,000 load cycles with the load of 70N were app

INTRODUCTION: Pneumonia is an important cause of death in care home residents. Dysphagia and poor oral health are significant risk factors for developing aspiration pneumonia. Oral hygiene care reduces the number of oral bacteria and the risk of aspiration pneumonia. However, it is not clear yet which oral hygiene care intervention is most efficacious in reducing the risk of aspiration pneumonia. The aim of the study is to assess whether the application of a 0.05% chlorhexidine-containing solution in addition to the usual daily oral hygiene care reduces the incidence of pneumonia in physically

The clinical use of dental implants has a high success rate, but overload-induced bone loss around implant is not uncommon in patients with implant-supported denture especially those with long cantilever designs and greatly harmful to the long-term implant success. The mechanism underlying the bone loss is thought to be the imbalance of bone remodeling involving a detrimental positive feedback activated by overloading. While surgical regenerative treatments may be useful in promoting bone regeneration, extra suffering and risk of infection have to be fully recognized. To date, no optimal metho

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Highly polished enamel surfaces are recommended for axial tooth surfaces that will serve as guiding planes and be contacted by component parts of a removable partial denture. There is little evidence to support the assumption that this tooth modification will provide accurate adaptation of the framework and prevent build-up of plaque.
PURPOSE: The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the surface roughness of the tooth enamel, prepared to serve as guiding planes, with different polishing systems.

BACKGROUND: Missing maxillary lateral incisors create an esthetic problem with specific orthodontic and prosthetic considerations. The purpose of this article is to describe treatment protocols and problems encountered in the management of this disorder.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The two common treatment options are orthodontic space opening for future restorations or orthodontic space closure using canines to replace the missing maxillary lateral incisors. The required amount of space opening and the various prosthetic options are discussed. The methods for reshaping canines in orthodontic space clo

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are structural anomalies resulting from the failure of craniofacial prominences to fuse during embryonic development. Orthodontic treatment seeks to address these conditions by improving dentofacial balance and restoring oral function, but long-term post-treatment stability continues to pose a challenge. This systematic review included a literature search of four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL) to identify observational evidence on the stability of orthodontic treatment in CLP. Six studies, comprising three cohort studies a

BACKGROUND: Computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials have revolutionized dental restorations, offering enhanced mechanical properties and esthetic outcomes. However, the fracture resistance of various CAD/CAM materials used in fixed partial dentures (FPDs) remains a crucial determinant of their clinical success.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three CAD/CAM materials-lithium disilicate, zirconia, and resin-based composite-were selected for the study. A total of 45 three-unit FPD frameworks (15 specimens for each material) were fabricated using standardized CAD/CAM protoco
