A rare case of congenital pupillary abnormality: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies of the pupil are quite varied, including abnormal size, shape, color, response to stimulus, and function. We are here reporting an unusual case presented with the absence of pupillary opening with folds of iris tissue at the center. Only an extremely small pupil (diameter < 0.5 mm) could be observed during the operation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old male patient visited our outpatient clinic due to vision difficulty in his right eye for more than ten years. The best-corrected visual acuity was 2.0 logMAR and 0 logMAR for the right and left eye, respectivel

Complete oculomotor nerve palsy - first manifestation of gastric adenocarcinoma: clinical experience and literature review.

The diagnosis and management of the alteration of the normal function of the oculomotor nerve (third cranial nerve) varies depending on the characteristics of the paralysis, the age of the patient, and the associated symptoms and signs. Oculomotor nerve palsy may be caused by lesions located anywhere from the oculomotor nucleus to the termination of the third nerve in the extraocular muscles. Although there have been significant advances in neuroimaging to facilitate early diagnosis, the management of a patient presenting with isolated oculomotor palsy is still challenging. This review tackles

Automatic diagnosis of strabismus in digital videos through cover test.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Medical image processing can contribute to the detection and diagnosis of human body anomalies, and it represents an important tool to assist in minimizing the degree of uncertainty of any diagnosis, while providing specialists with an additional source of diagnostic information. Strabismus is an anomaly that affects approximately 4% of the population. Strabismus modifies vision such that the eyes do not properly align, influencing binocular vision and depth perception. Additionally, it results in aesthetic problems, which can be reversed at any age. However, the use

Electrical stimulation of superior colliculus affects strabismus angle in monkey models for strabismus.

Disruption of binocular vision during the critical period for development leads to eye misalignment in humans and in monkey models. We have previously suggested that disruption within a vergence circuit could be the neural basis for strabismus. Electrical stimulation in the rostral superior colliculus (rSC) leads to vergence eye movements in normal monkeys. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of SC stimulation on eye misalignment in strabismic monkeys. Electrical stimulation was delivered to 51 sites in the intermediate and deep layers of the SC (400 Hz, 0.5-s du

[Quantitative analysis of the slow-phase in LMLN].

Latent/manifest latent nystagmus (LMLN) is a jerky type of nystagmus with the fast phase directed toward the fixating eye. A previous report described that the slow phase shows decreasing-velocity exponentials. However, it is sometimes difficult to differentiate between pure LMLN and latent nystagmus with congenital nystagmus. Furthermore, there has been no detailed report of quantitative analysis of the waveform of LMLN. Therefore, in the present study 18 cases with LMLN were clinically selected and their eye positions and/or strabismus were carefully studied. The eye movement was recorded by

Ophthalmological Findings and Their Clinical Correlations in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Comparative Study.

ObjectiveAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) can affect vision both directly through central nervous system involvement and indirectly by complicating ophthalmological examinations due to limited eye contact and poor cooperation. Visual impairments may exacerbate social interaction difficulties and affect motor development in individuals with ASD. Previous studies reported ophthalmological involvement in 27-71% of children with ASD, including refractive errors, strabismus, and amblyopia. The purpose of this study was to investigate visual impairments in children with ASD and examine their relations

Home-based perceptual learning augments high-frequency contrast sensitivity and stereopsis after esotropia surgery: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Despite successful surgical realignment, children with esotropia often retain deficits in medium and high spatial frequency (SF) contrast sensitivity (CS) and stereopsis due to persistent cortical suppression. While perceptual learning (PL) improves binocular outcomes in exotropia and amblyopia, its efficacy in esotropia remains unexplored. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 44 pediatric esotropia patients (mean age: 4.34 ± 1.68 years) who underwent strabismus surgery followed by ≥3 months of home-based computerized PL. CS was assessed at five SFs (1.5-18 cycles per degree

Ocular Myasthenia Gravis following strabismus surgery and presenting as refractory strabismus.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular myasthenia gravis is a protean disorder and can present with myriad disorders of ocular motility. The diagnosis may not be obvious at presentation and strabismus surgery has occasionally been performed with unexpected outcomes. Strabismus surgery can be performed on patients with ocular myasthenia gravis who have stable ocular deviations, although outcomes may vary. CASE REPORT: We report two patients who were operated for strabismus and were diagnosed as ocular myasthenia gravis later, when classic signs appeared. The first patient underwent right medial rectus recession
