Unexpected Cryptosporidium species Identified from New York State Clinical Stool Specimens.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidiosis is predominantly considered a waterborne illness that occurs after becoming infected with Cryptosporidium parvum or Cryptosporidium hominis, the two species that typically infect humans. However, identifying non-C. parvum/C. hominis species that infect humans could reveal additional behaviors or exposures that contribute to cryptosporidiosis. Here, we identify species, non-C. parvum/C. hominis species causing infections and determine their distribution within New York State (NYS). METHODS: To do this, real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) was used to presc

Analytical validation of an immunoassay for the detection of Cystoisospora spp. coproantigen in canine and feline fecal samples.

Cystoisospora species that infect dogs and cats are ubiquitous, and oocysts can be found in the feces of both subclinically infected and sick animals. Most clinical cases are diagnosed in puppies and kittens <4-mo-old. We validated a high-throughput immunoassay (Fecal Dx immunoassay; Idexx), which uses 2 monoclonal antibodies to detect Cystoisospora spp. coproantigen, using zinc sulfate centrifugal flotation (ZCF) as the reference method and samples from experimentally infected animals. This new genus-level coproantigen assay had equivalent sensitivity for at least 4 relevant Cystoisospora spp

Flea-Borne Rickettsioses and Scrub Typhus in Patients with Suspected Arbovirus Infection in Bangkok, Thailand.

Background: In urban Thailand, arboviral infections dominate diagnoses of acute undifferentiated fevers (AUFs) owing to their well-defined epidemiology and characteristic clinical presentations. However, rickettsial diseases, also endemic in this setting, remain under-recognized owing to challenges in early detection. Objective: This study aimed to identify potential rickettsial infections among patients with AUF in Bangkok and vicinity utilizing leftover nucleic acid extracted from serum samples from patients initially suspected of but negative for arbovirus infections. Materials and Methods:

Survey of selected pathogens in free-ranging pinnipeds in Uruguay.

Marine mammals, regarded as sentinels of aquatic ecosystem health, are exposed to different pathogens and parasites under natural conditions. We surveyed live South American fur seals Arctocephalus australis and South American sea lions Otaria flavescens in Uruguay for Leptospira spp., canine distemper virus (CDV), Mycobacterium spp., Toxoplasma gondii, and Neospora caninum. Samples were collected from 2007 to 2013. The seroprevalence of Leptospira spp. was 37.6% positive, 50.9% negative, and 11.5% suspect for A. australis (n = 61) while for O. flavescens (n = 12) it was 67% positive, 25% nega

Leishmania V. braziliensis infection in asymptomatic domestic animals within an endemic region in the Northeast of Brazil.

BACKGROUND: American cutaneous leishmaniasis is a commonly neglected, vector-borne tropical parasitic disease that is a major public health concern in Brazil. Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis is the main species associated with the disease. Accurate diagnosis is based on epidemiological surveillance, clinical assessment, and laboratory testing. Leishmania (V.) braziliensis has been detected in several wild and synanthropic mammals. Their epidemiological role has not been entirely elucidated. This study aimed to assess potential L. braziliensis infections in asymptomatic domestic animals, by m

Introduction and Establishment of Raccoon Rabies on Islands: Jekyll Island, Georgia, USA as a Case Study.

The introduction of rabies virus (RABV) to barrier islands, which are often popular tourist destinations with resource-rich habitats and connectivity and proximity to the mainland, is especially concerning because it can easily become endemic due to factors like dense rabies-vector populations (e.g., raccoons [ Procyon lotor]), high inter- and intraspecies contact rates, and anthropogenic activities such as supplemental feeding of feral cats ( Felis catus). In January 2013, a neurologic raccoon found on the Jekyll Island (JI), Georgia, US causeway tested positive for rabies. Mortality investig

Molecular cloning and functional characterization of eleven subtypes of interferon-α in Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica).

Interferon has a broad-spectrum of antiviral effects and represents an ideal choice for the development of antiviral drugs. Nonetheless, information about alpha interferon (IFN-α) is vacant in Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), an endangered species and indigenous to northeast Asia. Herein, 11 PtIFN-αs genes, which encoded proteins of 164-165 amino acids, were amplified. Afterwards, expression and purification were conducted in Escherichia coli. In physicochemical analysis, PtIFN-αs were shown to be highly sensitive to trypsin and remained stable despite changes in pH and temperature. In fe

Checking Wilderness Through Conservation Genetics: The Case of the European Wildcat in the Central Apennines, Italy.

The European wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris, EWC) is threatened by habitat fragmentation, hybridisation with domestic cats, and climate change, yet its distribution and genetic status in Italy remain poorly resolved. Here, we developed a species distribution model (SDM) based on 69 occurrence records compiled from published sources to identify suitable habitats across the Italian peninsula and characterised 23 newly collected occurrences from the Central-Southern Apennines, which included associated biological samples. The model identified forest and grassland cover and elevation as the

The feline sacroiliac joint: An overview of its innervation and morphology.

The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) serves as a central interface for force transmission from the hindlimbs to the axial skeleton in animals of all species. Its specialized morphology reflects this functional requirement, comprising a smooth auricular surface and a rugose tuberosity covered by interosseous ligaments. In both human and equine medicine, the SIJ is recognized as a primary source of varied back pain. Despite its biomechanical and clinical significance, very limited data exist in small animal medicine concerning the structure, innervation, and clinical relevance of the SIJ. The present stud

Feline papillomavirus-associated Merkel cell carcinoma: a comparative review with human Merkel cell carcinoma.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare skin tumor that shares a similar immunophenotype with Merkel cells, although its origin is debatable. More than 80% of human MCC cases are associated with Merkel cell polyomavirus infections and viral gene integration. Recent studies have shown that the clinical and pathological characteristics of feline MCC are comparable to those of human MCC, including its occurrence in aged individuals, aggressive behavior, histopathological findings, and the expression of Merkel cell markers. More than 90% of feline MCC are positive for the Felis catus papillomavirus

First autochthonous clinical case of Hepatozoon silvestris in a domestic cat in Italy with unusual presentation.

Hepatozoon spp. is the causative agent of a vector-borne parasitic disease in many animal species. In felids, Hepatozoon felis, Hepatozoon canis and Hepatozoon silvestris have been molecularly isolated. Hepatozoonosis usually causes asymptomatic infections in domestic cats, but clinical cases have recently been reported in Europe. We describe the first Italian case of hepatozoonosis in a cat with an unusual presentation. An 11-year-old neutered European shorthair cat was urgently hospitalized for intestinal intussusception.
