More young people are living in the world than ever before, 90% of whom reside in low and middle income countries (LMICs). To address their needs, it is critical to have sustainable youth engagement when determining policy and to advance effective implementation of youth-focused interventions. Youth Community Advisory Boards (CABs) are a sustainable mechanism to achieve this goal. This paper describes engagement with youth CAB members across four locations in Tanzania. To set youth CAB meeting agendas and priorities, we asked youth CAB members to write (using free text) the top five challenges

BACKGROUND: Self-care is the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and manage illness and disability with or without a health care provider. In resource-constrained settings with disrupted sexual and reproductive health (SRH) service coverage and access, SRH self-care could play a critical role. Despite SRH conditions being among the leading causes of mortality and morbidity among women of reproductive age in humanitarian and fragile settings, there are currently no reviews of self-care interventions in these contexts to guide po

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between partner psychological abuse and child maltreatment perpetration.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined a population-based sample of mothers with children aged 0-17 years in North and South Carolina (n=1,149). Mothers were asked about the occurrence of potentially neglectful or abusive behaviors toward their children by either themselves or their husband/partner in the past year. Partner psychological abuse was categorized as no psychological abuse (reference), husband perpetrates, wife perpetrates, or both perpetrate. Outcome measu

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability worldwide, placing a heavy burden on individuals and healthcare systems. Understanding global and regional epidemiological patterns is essential for designing effective interventions. This study aims to evaluate the burden of MDD and its major risk factors globally and in China, offering evidence for targeted mental health strategies.
METHODS: We extracted data on MDD prevalence, incidence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and selected attributable risk factors between 1990 and 2021 from the Global Burde

BACKGROUND: Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) individuals experience intimate partner violence (IPV) at twice the rates of cisgender populations. Although prior research has linked IPV to elevated HIV risk and vulnerability among TNB persons, there is limited understanding of how IPV influences key HIV prevention behaviors, such as HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, and initiation and use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). IPV experiences among TNB individuals are complex and diverse, varying by type, frequency, severity, and power and relationship dynamics, and often interse

BACKGROUND: Illicit drug use results in considerable global morbidity, but there is little data on its trends and factors associated with it in sub-Saharan Africa. We consider these questions using national data from South Africa for 2002-2017.
METHODS: We analysed data among individuals aged 15 years or older from five national population-based household surveys in South Africa (2002-2017; n = 89,113). Recent drug use was defined as the last three-months use of illicit drugs, i.e., any use of cannabis, cocaine, amphetamine, inhalants, sedatives, hallucinogens, opioids, and/or other illicit d

Young female sex-workers (FSW) aged 18-24 are at high risk of HIV due to high numbers of sexual partners, difficulty negotiating condom use, increased risk of gender-based violence, and limited access to services. Here we describe changes in sexual behaviours among young FSW across Zimbabwe between 2013 and 2016, and risk factors for prevalent HIV in 2013 and 2016. FSW ≥ 18 years were recruited using respondent-driven sampling in 14 sites across Zimbabwe in 2013 and 2016 as part of the SAPPH-IRe trial. We collected data on socio-demographics and sexual behaviour and offered HIV testing. Statis

INTRODUCTION: Hymen anatomy and physiology remain poorly understood, even among health-care providers. Misconceptions about virginity testing, virginity certification, and hymenoplasty can lead to harmful practices and place women who are unable to prove their virginity at risk of violence or even death. The aim of this study is to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of gynecologists and pediatricians in Switzerland regarding virginity testing, virginity certification, and hymenoplasty, and to identify gaps to inform future training and professional guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress, a broad construct that encompasses of a range of emotional difficulties—including depression and anxiety—is prevalent during pregnancy and postnatally with up to 25% of women experiencing psychological distress globally. However, this is mostly described in high income countries (HIC), with little data from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The aim of this study was to describe and determine latent trajectory classes of maternal psychological distress from pregnancy through five years postpartum in a LMIC setting. METHODS: Data were used from women e

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the temporal and spatial trends in the burden of HIV/AIDS related to intimate partner violence (IPV) on global, regional, and country scales among females.
METHOD: Data were from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study. We assessed the global disability-adjusted life years (DALYs; per 100,000 population) and death of HIV/AIDS attributable to IPV by age and geographical location. The estimated annual percentage change across 204 countries and territories was used to present the temporal and spatial trends. Furthermore, we examined the relationship b

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to lasting mental health and psychosocial consequences just as were experienced with the HIV epidemic. A rapid review of published systematic reviews on HIV/AIDS and mental health outcomes and responses among children and adolescents was used to identify lessons for the COVID-19 pandemic response. The review found that HIV/AIDS responses to promote mental health, prevent ill-health and treat mental health conditions included diverse interventions at the structural or national, community, household and individual levels. Some of these responses can be easily replic

BACKGROUND: Ending preventable maternal deaths remains a global priority and in the later stages of obstetric transition, identifying the social determinants of maternal health outcomes is essential to address stagnating maternal mortality rates. Countries would hardly achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SGD) targets on maternal health, unless the complex and context-specific socio-economic aetiologies associated with maternal mental health and suicide are identified. The Rajarata Pregnancy Cohort (RaPCo) is a prospective cohort study, designed to explore the interactions between social

BACKGROUND: A maternal mortality ratio is a sensitive indicator when comparing the overall maternal health between countries and its very high figure indicates the failure of maternal healthcare efforts. Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam-CLMV countries are the low-income countries of the South-East Asia region where their maternal mortality ratios are disproportionately high. This systematic review aimed to summarize all possible factors influencing maternal mortality in CLMV countries.
METHODS: This systematic review applied "The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-A

BACKGROUND: Substance use and adverse sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes continue to be significant threats to female adolescents' health and wellbeing, particularly to these marginalized subpopulations. Our research aimed to tackle knowledge gaps regarding the prevalence of concurrent substance use including alcohol, tobacco, illicit drug among Chinese adolescent female sex workers (AFSWs), while to assess the correlates between substance use and SRH risks; the needs for comprehensive SRH services were also examined in this study.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study enrolled 310 AFSW

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence supports that women with histories of abuse have heightened stress and immune dysregulation. Few studies have examined the biological plausibility of this association in US Black women-a population disproportionately affected by gender-based violence (GBV), health disparities, and generally underrepresented in research. Biomarkers of stress and immune health remain challenging to study due to barriers in recruitment, retention, and protocol adherence.
OBJECTIVE: This study developed and examined the feasibility of an at-home, self-collected, and minimally invasiv

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic disorders are highly prevalent among people living with HIV, complicating the medication management of both conditions. Primary partners provide key sources of support for antiretroviral therapy; however, little research has considered their role in the context of comorbidities.
PURPOSE: Using baseline data from the Healthy Hearts cohort study, we investigated associations between relationship dynamics and dual medication adherence for HIV and hypertension (HTN) in Malawi.
METHODS: Healthy Hearts is an observational cohort study with people living with HIV and eit
