[Depression and frontal dysfunction: risks for the elderly?].

BACKGROUND: Frontal lobe syndromes include reduced activity, particularly a diminution of spontaneous activity, lack of drive, inability to plan ahead, and induce a lack of concern. These last points constitute the executive dysfunction syndrome. That executive dysfunction could be the core defect in patients with geriatric or vascular depression, and might be related to frontal-subcortical circuit dysfunction. Sometimes frontal lobe syndromes are associated with restless, aimless, uncoordinated behavior or even disinhibition, increasing the risks of falls and of malnutrition. Some authors hav

Oh brother, where art tau? Amyloid, neurodegeneration, and cognitive decline without elevated tau.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can be an early manifestation of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, other pathologic entities [e.g., cerebrovascular disease, Lewy body disease, LATE (limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy)], or mixed pathologies, with concomitant AD- and non-AD pathology being particularly common, albeit difficult to identify, in living MCI patients. The National Institute on Aging and Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA) A/T/(N) [β-Amyloid/Tau/(Neurodegeneration)] AD research framework, which classifies research participants according to three binary biomarkers [β-

[Anorexia nervosa in the light of neurocognitive functioning: New theoretical and therapeutic perspectives].

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa is a serious psychiatric disorder, for which very few validated therapeutic strategies exist. The specific sociocognitive style of anorexic patients has already been described in the 1960s: it involves a concrete style with abstraction difficulties. Current neuropsychological tests have contributed to a more precise definition of these difficulties. NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL DATA: IS THERE A SPECIFIC COGNITIVE PROFILE?: Contrary to common beliefs, these patients' intellectual performances are not superior to those of the general population. However, detailed comparison

Clinical spectrum and outcomes of anti-metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 encephalitis in Chinese patients: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Anti-metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) encephalitis is a rare autoimmune disorder that targets the metabotropic glutamate receptor. It is frequently linked to limbic encephalitis and paraneoplastic syndromes, such as Ophelia syndrome associated with Hodgkin lymphoma. Due to its rarity, the complete clinical spectrum and regional variations of this condition, particularly among Chinese populations, remain inadequately understood. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of a 39-year-old Chinese male diagnosed with anti-mGluR5 encephalitis. The patient initially presented with p

[A 68-year-old woman with dementia and parkinsonism].

We report a 68-year-old woman who developed progressive dementia and parkinsonism. She was well until 1990 when she was 58 years of age. She started to show memory loss. Four years later, she developed difficulty in dressing and behavioral problems such as eating rice with her hands, going out of her house without purposes, and difficulty in finding the rest room in her house. She was admitted to the neurology service of Hatsuishi Hospital on January 19, 1996, when she was 64 years of the age. On admission, she was alert but markedly demented. The score of Hansegawa Dementia Scale was 0/30. Sh

Fixel-based analysis links white matter characteristics, serostatus and clinical features in limbic encephalitis.

Limbic encephalitis (LE) is an autoimmune syndrome often associated with temporal lobe epilepsy. Recent research suggests that particular structural changes in LE depend on the type of the associated antibody and occur in both mesiotemporal gray matter and white matter regions. However, it remains questionable to what degree conventional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-methods reflect alterations in white matter microstructure, since these methods do not account for crossing fibers. To address this methodological shortcoming, we applied fixel-based analysis as a novel technique modeling distinc

Differences and similarities in insular and temporal pole MRI gray matter volume abnormalities in first-episode schizophrenia and affective psychosis.

CONTEXT: Whether psychoses associated with schizophrenia and affective disorder represent manifestations of different disorders or the same disorder is an important but unresolved question in psychiatry. Results of previous volumetric magnetic resonance imaging investigations indicate that gray matter volume reductions in neocortical regions may be specific to schizophrenia. OBJECTIVE: To simultaneously evaluate multiple olfactocentric paralimbic regions, which play crucial roles in human emotion and motivation, in first-episode patients with schizophrenia and affective psychosis. DESIGN: A

Impaired modulation of attention and emotion in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Fronto-limbic interactions facilitate the generation of task-relevant responses while inhibiting interference from emotionally distracting information. Schizophrenia is associated with deficits in both executive attention and affective regulation. This study aims to elucidate the neural correlates of emotion-attention regulation and shifting in schizophrenia. METHOD: We employed functional magnetic resonance imaging to probe the fronto-limbic regions in 16 adults with schizophrenia and 13 matched adults with no history of psychiatric illness. Subjects performed a forced-choice visu

Striatal dopamine receptors and transporters in monkeys with neonatal temporal limbic damage.

Developmental cortical damage has been implicated in the basic neurobiology of schizophrenia. Adult rhesus monkeys with neonatal temporal limbic damage show a stimulus-dependent disinhibition of subcortical dopamine (DA) release. We measured dopamine D2 receptors and transporters in vivo in rhesus monkeys with neonatal and adult mesial temporal limbic lesions and control monkeys to explore further the effects of this developmental lesion on striatal DA function. All monkeys were studied with [I-123]IBZM SPECT to assess the availability of striatal dopamine D2 receptors and with [I-123]beta-CIT

Exploring the effect of multi-modal intervention against cognitive decline on atrophy and small vessel disease imaging markers in the AgeWell.de imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Multimodal lifestyle interventions might help to maintain healthy cognition in older age and to delay onset of dementia. Here, we studied the effects of a multi-modal lifestyle-based intervention, based on the FINGER trial, on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) markers of hippocampal-limbic atrophy and cerebral small vessel disease in older adults at increased risk for dementia in Germany. METHODS: Leipzig participants of the multicenter AgeWell.de randomized controlled trial underwent neuroimaging before and after a two year intervention at 3 Tesla MRI. We extracted hippocampal vol

MRI-Derived Modeling of Disease Progression Patterns in Patients With Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is assumed to follow a steady course that is similar across patients. To date, phenotypic and temporal diversities of TLE evolution remain unknown. In this study, we aimed at simultaneously characterizing these sources of variability based on cross-sectional data. METHODS: We studied consecutive patients with TLE referred for evaluation by neurologists to the Montreal Neurological Institute epilepsy clinic, who underwent in-patient video EEG monitoring and multimodal imaging at 3 Tesla, comprising 3D T1 and fluid-attenuated inversion rec

Distinct brain atrophy progression subtypes underlie phenoconversion in isolated REM sleep behaviour disorder.

BACKGROUND: Synucleinopathies include a spectrum of disorders varying in features and severity, including idiopathic/isolated REM sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Distinct brain atrophy patterns may already be seen in iRBD; however, how brain atrophy begins and progresses remains unclear. METHODS: A multicentric cohort of 1276 participants (451 polysomnography-confirmed iRBD, 142 PD with probable RBD, 87 DLB, and 596 controls) underwent T1-weighted MRI and longitudinal clinical assessments. Brain atrophy was quantified using verte

MR imaging findings in some rare neurological complications of paediatric cancer.

Neurological complications of paediatric cancers are a substantial problem. Complications can be primary from central nervous system (CNS) spread or secondary from indirect or remote effects of cancer, as well as cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In this review, we present the clinical and imaging findings of rare but important neurological complications in paediatric patients with cancer. Neurological complications are classified into three phases: pre-treatment, treatment and post-remission. Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes, hyperviscosity syndrome, haemophag
