PURPOSE: Corneal clarity is frequently reduced during vitrectomy and scleral buckling surgery secondary to epithelial edema, requiring epithelial debridement to improve visibility. The presence of toxic preservatives in the corneal lubricant solutions is hypothesized to be a contributing factor to epithelial edema during vitreo-retinal surgery.

The name Enterobacter hormaechei is proposed for a new species of the family Enterobacteriaceae, formerly called Enteric Group 75, which consists of 23 strains, 22 of which were isolated from humans. DNAs from 12 E. hormaechei strains tested were highly related to the type strain (ATCC 49162) by DNA hybridization, using the hydroxyapatite method (80 to 97% in 60 degrees C reactions; 80 to 90% in 75 degrees C reactions). INTRODUCTION: Cultured mouse trophoblast stem cells (mTSC) maintain proliferation/normal stemness (NS) under FGF4, which when removed, causes normal differentiation (ND). Hypoxic, or hyperosmotic stress forces trophoblast giant cells (TGC) differentiate. Hypoxic, hyperosmotic, and genotoxic benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), which is found in tobacco smoke, force down-regulation of inhibitor of differentiation (Id)2, enabling TGC differentiation. Hypoxic and hyperosmotic stress induce TGC by SAPK-dependent HAND1 increase. Here we test whether BaP forces mTSC-to-TGC while inducing SAPK and HAND1.

Of four Holstein-Friesian calves infected with 200,000 sporocysts of Sarcocystis bovicanis, three become ill and died on days 35, 55, and 59 of a 63-day experiment.
