Cost-effectiveness of an experimental caries-control regimen in a 3.4-yr randomized clinical trial among 11-12-yr-old Finnish schoolchildren.

The aim of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of an experimental caries-control regimen in a randomized clinical trial (RCT) conducted in Pori, Finland, in 2001-2005. Children (n = 497) who were 11-12 yr of age and had at least one active initial caries lesion at baseline were studied. The children in the experimental group (n = 250) were offered an individually designed patient-centered regimen for caries control. The children in the control group (n = 247) received standard dental care. Furthermore, the whole population was exposed to continuous community-level oral health promo

Oral toxicity produced by chemotherapy: A systematic review.

IntroductionAntineoplastic chemotherapy remains one of the most widely used management strategies in cancer, either alone or in combination with other types of treatment. The main inconvenience of chemotherapy is its lack of selectivity, since it acts upon both tumor cells and rapidly multiplying normal cells such as bone marrow cells, hair follicle cells and oral and gastrointestinal mucosal cells.Material and methodAn exhaustive search was made of the main oral toxic effects of chemotherapy in the PubMed-Medline, Cochrane Library and Scopus databases. A total of 1293 articles were identified

A Prospective Evaluation of Percutaneous Vertebroplasty in Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fracture Patients.

Background Osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) is a common problem in old age, which causes incapacitating pain and leads to significant disability, morbidity, and mortality. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP), a minimally invasive procedure, results in immediate pain relief with decreased morbidity. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life (QOL), as denoted by the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) score. In contrast, the secondary aims were determining pain relief using the 11-point Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and vertebral height restor

Behaviour change intervention (education and text) to prevent dental caries in secondary school pupils: BRIGHT RCT, process and economic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The presence of dental caries impacts on children's daily lives, particularly among those living in deprived areas. There are successful interventions across the United Kingdom for young children based on toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste. However, evidence is lacking for oral health improvement programmes in secondary-school pupils to reduce dental caries and its sequelae. OBJECTIVES: To determine the clinical and cost effectiveness of a behaviour change intervention promoting toothbrushing for preventing dental caries in secondary-school pupils. DESIGN: A multicentre, scho

Over-the-counter and compounded mouthwashes for radiotherapy-induced xerostomia: a randomized controlled trial.

Head and neck radiotherapy quantitatively and qualitatively compromises salivary flow, and salivary substitutes have the potential to alleviate the symptoms. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of two salivary substitutes in relieving symptoms of radiotherapy-induced xerostomia through a double-blind randomized controlled trial. Twenty-four patients were selected from a dental oncology clinic and randomly assigned to the over-the-counter or compounded mouthwash group. Each patient was instructed to rinse their oral cavity with the assigned solution three times a day for 30 days. Both p

Review of Myeloma Therapies and Their Potential for Oral and Maxillofacial Side Effects.

Myeloma is a common haematological malignancy in which adverse skeletal related events are frequently seen. Over recent years, treatment for myeloma has evolved leading to improved survival. Antiresorptive therapy is an important adjunct therapy to reduce the risk of bone fractures and to improve the quality of life for myeloma patients; however, this has the potential for unwanted side effects in the oral cavity and maxillofacial region. Osteonecrosis of the jaw related to antiresorptive medications and other myeloma therapies is not uncommon. This review serves to highlight the risk of osteo

Yellow nail syndrome: a review.

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS; OMIM 153300, ORPHA662) is a very rare disorder that almost always occurs after 50 years of age but a juvenile or familial form has also been observed. YNS is diagnosed based on a triad associating yellow nail discoloration, pulmonary manifestations (chronic cough, bronchiectasia, pleural effusion) and lower limb lymphedema. Chronic sinusitis is frequently associated with the triad. YNS etiology remains unknown but a role of lymphatic impairment is usually evoked. YNS is more frequently isolated but may be associated in rare cases with autoimmune diseases, other clini

Primary Aggressive Oral Lymphomas (PAOL): A Narrative Review of Diagnosis, Molecular Features, Therapeutic Approaches, and the Integrated Role of Dentists and Hematologists.

Primary aggressive oral lymphomas (PAOL) are a rare subset of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas arising in the oral cavity without evidence of other systemic involvement at diagnosis. PAOL accounts for only about 2-3% of all lymphomas. They most commonly belong to aggressive B-cell subtypes such as Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL), with occasional cases of Burkitt lymphoma and T-cell/NK-cell lymphomas. Clinically, these malignancies often present with non-specific symptoms (e.g., swelling, pain, ulceration, tooth mobility) that mimic benign dental condition
