INTRODUCTION: Regional changes in brain stiffness were previously demonstrated in an experimental obstructive hydrocephalus juvenile rat model. The open cranial sutures in the juvenile rats have influenced brain compression and mechanical properties during hydrocephalus development and the extent by which closed cranial sutures in adult hydrocephalic rat models affect brain stiffness in-vivo remains unclear. The aims of this study were to determine changes in brain tissue mechanical properties and brain structure size during hydrocephalus development in adult rat with fixed cranial volume and

BACKGROUND: Newborns admitted to the intensive care unit undergo multiple painful procedures. Fentanyl citrate (FC) is one of the most commonly used drugs for pain relief in the newborn. Although it has been reported that one of the biological effects of fentanyl is hemodynamic stability, the response of systemic and/or cerebrovascular prostanoids to FC infusions have not been studied.
METHODS: To examine the effects of continuous intravenous (IV) infusion of FC on systemic and cerebrovascular prostanoid concentrations, two groups of spontaneously breathing newborn piglets (1-3 days old) were

Induction of the hemeoxygenase-1 (ho-1) stress gene is of importance for rapid heme metabolism and protection against oxidative injury in vitro and in vivo. Although ho-1 expression is observed in glia following exposure to whole blood and oxyhemoglobin, expression is mild, and other stress genes are not induced simultaneously in this setting. Hemeoxygenase-1 can be induced by several other physiological stresses in addition to heme. In the brain, ho-1 induction has been observed in the penumbra following focal cerebral ischemia. Because lysed blood is a spasmogen, the authors studied focal hy

The involvement of capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in central thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)-induced hepatic cytoprotection was investigated in rats. Both systemic capsaicin pretreatment and intravenous administration of CGRP receptor antagonist, human CGRP-(8-37), completely abolished the protective effect of intracisternal TRH analog (RX-77368; p-Glu-His-(3,3'-dimethyl)-Pro-NH2, 5 ng) against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver injury, assessed by serum alanin aminotransferase levels and histological changes. These data demonst

OBJECT: The detailed anatomy of intracranial structures has been studied mainly in cadavers, but the absence of cerebrospinal fluid and blood pressure in these models distorts normal spatial relationships. The authors investigated the rotation of the facial nerve (FN), superior vestibular nerve (SVN), inferior vestibular nerve (IVN), and cochlear nerve (CN) in the internal auditory canal (IAC) and cerebellopontine cistern in human volunteers and compared their results with those reported in cadaver studies.
METHODS: The IACs and cerebellopontine cisterns of 30 normal adults (34 sides) were ex

BACKGROUND: Progressive ventriculomegaly and the resulting irreversible brain damage may be mitigated through timely diversion prenatal intervention. While ventriculosubgaleal shunt (VSGS) is commonly performed postnatally in premature infants, in utero placement is unexplored.
OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the feasibility of intrauterine placement of VSGS using a fetal lamb obstructive hydrocephalus model.
STUDY DESIGN: Hydrocephalus was induced in 14 fetal lambs by injecting 1-1.5 mL of BioGlueⓇ into the cisterna magna between Days 80 and 90 of gestation. Ten to 16 days later, ultrasound was pe

BACKGROUND: To establish the normal reference ranges for parameters related to the fetal posterior fossa in the first trimester (11 ~ 13+6 weeks of gestation) and to analyze the relationship between them and crown-rump length (CRL) among the Chinese population.
METHODS: Singleton pregnancies of 11 ~ 13+6 weeks (CRL:45 ~ 84 mm) with both parents from China were randomly selected from January 2021 to November 2021. The related parameters of the posterior fossa including cisterna magna (CM), intracranial translucency (IT), brain stem (BS), brain stem to the occipital bone (BSOB), and brain stem/

OBJECTIVES: There is much evidence suggesting that inflammation contributes majorly to subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)-induced cerebral vasospasm and brain injury. miRNAs have been found to modulate inflammation in several neurological disorders. This study investigated the effect of miR-195-5p on SAH-induced vasospasm and early brain injury in experimental rats.
METHODS: Ninety-six Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly and evenly divided into a control group (no SAH, sham surgery), a SAH only group, a SAH + NC-mimic group, and a SAH + miR-195-5p group. SAH was induced using a single injection

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the accuracy of an automated three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound technique for fetal intracranial measurements compared with manual acquisition.
METHODS: This was a prospective observational study of patients presenting for routine anatomical survey between 18 + 0 and 22 + 6 weeks' gestation. After providing informed consent, each patient underwent two consecutive ultrasound examinations of the fetal head, one by a sonographer and one by a physician. Each operator obtained manual measurements of the biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), transcerebellar diam

BACKGROUND: Soft markers are nonspecific findings detected by ultrasonography during the second trimester that are often transient and nonpathologic but may imply an increased risk of underlying fetal aneuploidy. However, large-scale prospectively stratified studies focusing on the prevalence of chromosomal aberrations, including copy number variants, in fetuses with different types of isolated soft markers have rarely been published in the literature.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate clinical outcomes in fetuses with isolated soft markers by single nucleotide polymorphism array wit

Trisomy 18 is the second most common autosomal trisomy in newborns. The birth prevalence of this disorder is approximately 1 in 3,000 to 1 in 8,000, and the life span of the majority of patients is less than 1 year. As information regarding outcome in trisomy 18 is rather fragmentary in the literature, this study is aimed at investigating the survival and natural history of trisomy 18. We also evaluated the survival age and management of trisomy 18 in two different periods, before and after the implementation of National Health Insurance (NHI) program. Thirty-nine cases of trisomy 18 were coll

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The ability of high-field (1.5 T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect early brain meningitis was evaluated in a canine model. Contrast dose, timing postinjection, and imaging technique (specifically the use of magnetization transfer) were assessed.
METHODS: Imaging of five canines was performed at 1.5 T 24 hours after injection of Cowans staphylococcus into the cisterna magna. Two control animals also were imaged using the same protocol, with one animal receiving a cisternal injection of nutrient broth only and the other no injection. Contrast doses of 0.1, 0.

OBJECTIVE: Microsurgical fenestration of the third ventricular floor performed in one session with resection of deep seated tumors has been recently demonstrated as an approach to specifically address the concomitant obstructive hydrocephalus. As with endoscopic third ventriculostomy, occlusion of the stoma may result in progression of the obstructive hydrocephalus. In order to provide reliable communication between the basal cisterns and ventricles, we propose stenting of the stoma in cases of direct surgical approach to deep seated tumors.
METHODS: After performing tumor resection through t

The case of a 9-month-old girl with glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA 1) is reported. On initial presentation at 6 months of age, the patient demonstrated bilateral subdural hemorrhages and widening of the basal cisterns. After neurosurgical intervention the subdural effusions regressed; their etiology remained unclear. At the age of 9 months the patient presented again because of progressive loss of psychomotor abilities and a dystonic movement disorder. Cerebral MRI revealed regressive subdural hematoma, but marked frontotemporal atrophy as well. Because of a suspected metabolic disorder, urinary

The brainstem is essential for mediating energetic response to starvation. Brain stem TRH is synthesized in caudal raphe nuclei innervating brainstem and spinal vagal and sympathetic motor neurons. Intracisternal injection (ic) of a stable TRH analog RX77368 (7.5-25 ng) dose-dependently stimulated solid food intake by 2.4- to 3-fold in freely fed rats, an effect that lasted for 3 h. By contrast, RX77368 at 25 ng injected into the lateral ventricle induced a delayed and insignificant orexigenic effect only in the first hour. In pentobarbital-anesthetized rats, RX77368 (50 ng) ic induced a signi

BACKGROUND: Cerebral vasospasm can be defined as delayed-onset narrowing of the cerebral arteries that can occur after a spontaneous aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Despite a large number of experimental and clinical investigations, the exact pathophysiology of vasospasm remains unknown. Using a fluorescence differential-display system, we have identified the gene encoding heat shock protein 72 (HSP72) as being highly upregulated by cerebral vasospasm. We therefore elucidated the role of the HSP72 gene in cerebral vasospasm in a rat experimental SAH model.
METHODS AND RESULTS: By an

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A reduction in the local availability of nitric oxide (NO) may play a role in the etiology of chronic cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). We investigated the toxicity and efficacy of a locally delivered NO donor from a controlled-release polymer in preventing experimental cerebral vasospasm in rats and rabbits, respectively.
METHODS: Diethylenetriamine/NO (DETA/NO) was incorporated into controlled release ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVAc) polymers. Twenty-eight rats were used in a dose-escalation toxicity study to establish a maximally tolerated dose of

A previous study indicated that diaspirin-crosslinked hemoglobin (DCLHb) decreases cerebral ischemia after subarachnoid hemorrhage. However, the study was limited in that DCLHb was given to animals with an intact vasculature. As extravasated hemoglobin has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cerebral vasospasm, DCLHb in the subarachnoid space might in theory have a detrimental effect on cerebral perfusion after subarachnoid hemorrhage. In the current study, autologous blood was administered into the cistema magna of isoflurane-anesthetized rats. After 30 minutes, the animals received one of

In the field of rare diseases, progress in molecular diagnostics led to the recognition that variants linked to autosomal-dominant neurodegenerative diseases of later onset can, in the context of biallelic inheritance, cause devastating neurodevelopmental disorders and infantile or childhood-onset neurodegeneration. TOR1A-associated arthrogryposis multiplex congenita 5 (AMC5) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder arising from biallelic variants in TOR1A, a gene that in the heterozygous state is associated with torsion dystonia-1 (DYT1 or DYT-TOR1A), an early-onset dystonia with reduced penetra
