Mercury in hair as a biomarker of exposure in a coastal Venezuelan population.

To assess mercury exposure and potential risk, total mercury (THg-H) and methylmercury (MeHg-H) in hair were studied in 160 adults. The study group consisted of 60 individuals living in the north central coast of Venezuela. A section of the area was known to be contaminated with mercury from a chlor-alkali plant installed near one of the tributary rivers of the Caribbean Sea. The study group was selected from 4 inclusion criteria points. The control group was composed of 100 individuals selected from Carabobo state with no known exposure to Hg. A questionnaire was designed to collect demograph

Class I integrons containing a dhfrI trimethoprim resistance gene cassette in aquatic Acinetobacter spp.

The presence of antibiotic resistance gene cassettes in class I integrons was investigated in 24 sulfamethoxazole-resistant and -sensitive Acinetobacter isolates derived from two Danish freshwater trout farms. Integrons were detected in five isolates from one of the fish farms, and their inserts were characterised by DNA sequencing. Each isolate contained a dhfrI gene cassette encoding resistance to trimethoprim and an open reading frame orfC of unknown function identical to the content of an integron previously found in a clinical enterobacterial isolate. Among the five isolates, at least two

Invasive infections due to a fish pathogen, Streptococcus iniae. S. iniae Study Group.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus iniae is a pathogen in fish, capable of causing invasive disease and outbreaks in aquaculture farms. During the winter of 1995-1996 in the greater Toronto area there was a cluster of four cases of invasive S. iniae infection in people who had recently handled fresh, whole fish from such farms. METHODS: We conducted a prospective and retrospective community-based surveillance for cases of S. iniae infection in humans. To obtain a large sample of isolates, we studied cultures obtained from the surface of fish from aquaculture farms. Additional isolates were obtained fr

Histology and microstructure of the brain and eye in four fish species across different depths.

BACKGROUND: Vision is an important sensory system for most fish species. The eye structure is related to the ecology of the respective fish species and depends on the depth of life of that species. Depending on the type of lifestyle, feeding, behavior, and habitat of the fish, the different lobes of the fish's brain have different sizes. Information about eye and brain structure can help in ecology modeling, aquaculture and fisheries industries, and fish histopathology studies. METHODS: In this study, the structures of the eyes and brains of four different fish species (Scarus ghobban and Sca

Genomic Repertoire of Twenty-Two Novel Vibrionaceae Species Isolated from Marine Sediments.

The genomic repertoire of vibrios has been extensively studied, particularly regarding their metabolic plasticity, symbiotic interactions, and resistance mechanisms to environmental stressors. However, little is known about the genomic diversity and adaptations of vibrios inhabiting deep-sea marine sediments. In this study, we investigated the genomic diversity of vibrios isolated from deep-sea core sediments collected using a manned submersible off Japan. A total of 50 vibrio isolates were obtained and characterized phenotypically, and by genome sequencing. From this total, we disclosed 22 no

A multi-omics investigation reveals the hepatic response to salinity stress in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella).

In the context of increasing freshwater scarcity and the effects of climate change on aquatic environments, developing salt-tolerant fish strains has become a critical strategy for sustainable aquaculture. The limited availability of suitable species for saline-water aquaculture poses a significant challenge, severely impacting the development of the fishery economy. This study investigated the effects of 24 h exposure to freshwater, and seawater at salinities of 4, 9 ppt and 12 ppt, on juvenile grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Following these exposures, liver tissues were collected to as

Unveiling potential virulence determinants in Vibrio isolates from Anadara tuberculosa through whole genome analyses.

The genus Vibrio includes pathogenic bacteria able to cause disease in humans and aquatic organisms, leading to disease outbreaks and significant economic losses in the fishery industry. Despite much work on Vibrio in several marine organisms, no specific studies have been conducted on Anadara tuberculosa. This is a commercially important bivalve species, known as "piangua hembra," along Colombia's Pacific coast. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and characterize the genomes of Vibrio isolates obtained from A. tuberculosa. Bacterial isolates were obtained from 14 A. tuberculosa specimens

The United States dried seahorse trade: A comparison of traditional Chinese medicine and ecommerce-curio markets using molecular identification.

Tens of millions of dried seahorses (genus Hippocampus) are traded annually, and the pressure from this trade along with their life history traits (involved parental care and small migration distances and home ranges) has led to near global population declines. This and other forms of overexploitation have led to all seahorse species being listed in Appendix II under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The signatory nations of CITES recommended a 10-cm size limit of seahorses to ensure harvested individuals have reached reproductive matu

Inoculation of Freund's adjuvant in European eel (Anguilla anguilla) revealed key KEGG pathways and DEGs of host anti-Edwardsiella anguillarum infection.

Freund's complete (FCA) and incomplete adjuvants (FIA), generally applied in subunit fishery vaccine, have not been explored on the molecular mechanism of the nonspecific immune enhancement. In this study, we examined the RNA-seq in the spleen of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) inoculated with FCA and FIA (FCIA group) to elucidate the key KEGG pathways and differential expressed genes (DEGs) in the process of Edwardsiella anguillarum infection and A. anguilla anti-E. anguillarum infection using genome-wide transcriptome. After eels were challenged by E. anguillarum at 28 d post the first inoc

[Biology of cestodes of domestic ducks and wild water birds].

Life cycles of 16 cestode species of the families Hymenolepididae and Diploposthidae were studied in 52 ponds of the State Fishery in Bohemia and Moravia. The parasites were recovered from domestic ducks kept on the ponds and from wild birds, mostly of the genera Anas and Aythya, occurring in these water biotopes. Cestode larvae were found in 9 species of Copepoda (9669 out of 1 600 200 examined specimens, i. e. 0.6%) and 3 species of Ostracoda (500 out of 272 300 examined specimens, i. e. 0.18%). Five species of water snails serving as reservoir hosts harboured cysticercoids of 5 cestode spec

Molecular characterization and functional analysis of components of the TOR pathway of the salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1838).

The salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepods, Caligida) is a marine ectoparasite infecting salmonid fishes in the northern hemisphere. At present, salmon lice infections are the most severe disease problem in the salmon farming industry causing significant economic losses. Due to development of resistance towards available chemotherapeutants, it is clear that new chemotherapeutants or non-chemical control methods are essential to manage the parasite in the future. The TOR signaling pathway is present in all metazoans and is a major regulator of cellular activity according to nutrient ava

Aquaculture changes the profile of antibiotic resistance and mobile genetic element associated genes in Baltic Sea sediments.

Antibiotics are commonly used in aquaculture and they can change the environmental resistome by increasing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Sediment samples were collected from two fish farms located in the Northern Baltic Sea, Finland, and from a site outside the farms (control). The sediment resistome was assessed by using a highly parallel qPCR array containing 295 primer sets to detect ARGs, mobile genetic elements and the 16S rRNA gene. The fish farm resistomes were enriched in transposon and integron associated genes and in ARGs encoding resistance to antibiotics which had been used t

Schrödinger's Penguin? Divergent population trajectories and the challenge of assessing the threat status of the Erect-crested penguin.

"Schrödinger's Cat" is a quantum mechanics thought experiment in which a cat in a sealed box is considered both alive and dead until the box is opened and its true state observed. In species threat assessments, the reverse paradox can apply. We present the case of the Erect-crested penguin (Eudyptes sclateri), one of four extant penguin species currently listed as "Endangered" on the IUCN Red List - a classification based largely on limited and inconsistent observations from the 1970s. Between 2022 and 2024, we surveyed the entire global population of Erect-crested penguins, a species confined

Decreased resistance to bacterial cold-water disease and excessive inflammatory response in ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) reared at high water temperature.

INTRODUCTION: Temporal elevation of water temperature positively affects immune activity and disease resistance in poikilothermic teleost fish. The ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, an important fish species for Japanese freshwater fisheries, is usually produced under higher water temperatures than the natural conditions to facilitate rapid growth. However, it has been reported that rearing fish at higher water temperatures inhibits the development of the thymus, suggesting that resistance to infectious diseases is reduced in ayu reared at higher water temperatures. Here, we show that decreased res

Effects of long-term temperature acclimation on thyroid hormone deiodinase function, plasma thyroid hormone levels, growth, and reproductive status of male Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua.

The recent collapse of the Northwestern Atlantic cod fisheries has coincided with a cooling of water temperatures. During this time the condition factor of cod has been poor. The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of long-term temperature acclimation on growth reproduction and thyroid function in laboratory held Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). One of the key parameters used to assess thyroid function is the peripheral metabolism of L-thyroxine (T4) by microsomal deiodinase enzymes. Deiodinase function has not been described for gadid fish. T4 outer-ring deiodinating activ
