Dengue virus (DENV) is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus, a member of the Flaviviridae family (which causes Dengue fever), and an arthropod-transmitted human viral infection. Bangladesh is well known for having some of Asia's most vulnerable Dengue outbreaks, with climate change, its location, and it's dense population serving as the main contributors. For speculation about DENV outbreak characteristics, it is crucial to determine how meteorological factors correlate with the number of cases. This study used five time series models to observe the trend and forecast Dengue cases. Current

Dengue virus (DENV) causes frequent epidemics infecting ∼390 million people annually in over 100 countries. There are no approved vaccines or antiviral drugs for treatment of infected patients. However, there is a novel approach to control DENV transmission by the mosquito vectors, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, using the Wolbachia symbiont. The wMelPop strain of Wolbachia suppresses DENV transmission and shortens the mosquito life span. However, the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. To clarify this mechanism, either naive A. albopictus (C6/36) or wMelPop-C6/36 cells were infecte

BACKGROUND: Viral encephalitis is a common cause of lethal infections in humans, and several different viruses are documented to be responsible. Rocio virus is a flavivirus that causes a severe lethal encephalitis syndrome in humans and also mice, providing an interesting model to study the CNS compartmentalized immune response. Interleukin 33 (IL-33), a member of the IL-1 family, is an immunomodulatory cytokine that is highly expressed in the CNS. However, the role of IL-33 on viral encephalitis remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to explore how the IL-33/ST2 axis regulates the local immune

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that is emerging as a global pathogen. In the last decade, virulent strains of the virus have been associated with significant outbreaks of human and animal disease in Europe, the Middle East and North America. Efforts to develop human and veterinary vaccines have taken both traditional and novel approaches. A formalin-inactivated whole virus vaccine has been approved for use in horses. DNA vaccines coding for the structural WNV proteins have also been assessed for veterinary use and have been found to be protective in mice, horses and birds

TT virus (TTV) is widely distributed, with high frequencies of viremia in South America, Central Africa, and Papua New Guinea. The incidence and timing of infection in children born in a rural area of the Democratic Republic of Congo was investigated. TTV viremia was detected in 61 (58%) of 105 women attending an antenatal clinic and in 36 (54%) of 68 infants. Most infants acquired the infection at >/=3 months postpartum. Surprisingly, TTV infection was detected in a large proportion of children with TTV-negative mothers (13 [43%] of 30). Nucleotide sequences of TTV-infected children were freq

An RNA virus, designated hepatitis G virus (HGV), was identified from the plasma of a patient with chronic hepatitis. Extension from an immunoreactive complementary DNA clone yielded the entire genome (9392 nucleotides) encoding a polyprotein of 2873 amino acids. The virus is closely related to GB virus C (GBV-C) and distantly related to hepatitis C virus, GBV-A, and GBV-B. HGV was associated with acute and chronic hepatitis. Persistent viremia was detected for up to 9 years in patients with hepatitis. The virus is transfusion-transmissible. It has a global distribution and is present within t

GB virus C (GBV-C) is frequently identified in patients co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) due to the similar transmission routes. However, it remains unclear how these two viruses interact with each other and how one virus affects the replication of the other in the human body. In this study, we performed a case-control study to determine whether GBV-C viraemia could prevent the acquisition of HIV-1 infection, and a cohort study to determine the prevalence, genotypic characteristics and incidence of GBV-C infection in men who have sex with men (MSM) populations in Be

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is believed to cause 130-170 million infections worldwide, or roughly 3% population worldwide, and poses a serious risk to global health. Hepatitis C is an enveloped +ve RNA virus belonging to the family Flaviviridae. All around the world, HCV infection is the main cause of serious liver diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Even though drugs have been around for a while, only a small number of them have been proven to be effective against every HCV genotype because of their genetic diversity and complexity. The objective of the paper to

African swine fever virus (ASFV) and classical swine fever virus (CSFV) are important transboundary animal diseases (TADs) affecting swine. ASFV is a large DNA virus with a genome size of 170-190 kilobases (kB) belonging to the family Asfarviridae, genus Asfivirus. CSFV is a single-stranded RNA virus with genome size of approximately 12 kB belonging to the family Flaviviridae, genus Pestivirus. Outbreaks involving either one of these viruses result in similar disease syndromes and significant economic impacts from: (i) high morbidity and mortality events; (ii) control measures which include cu

Zika virus is an emerging mosquito-borne (Aedes genus) arbovirus of the Flaviviridae family. Following epidemics in Micronesia and French Polynesia during the past decade, more recent Zika virus infection outbreaks were first reported in South America as early as May 2013 and spread to now 50 countries throughout the Americas. Although no other flavivirus has previously been known to cause major fetal malformations following perinatal infection, reports of a causal link between Zika virus and microcephaly, brain and ocular malformations, and fetal loss emerged from hard-hit regions of Brazil b

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the prevalence of hepatitis G-RNA (GBV-C/HGV-RNA), a recently cloned new flavivirus, and of antibodies to the envelope 2 antigen (anti-E2), a marker of past infection, in patients with autoimmune hepatitis, and compared it with the prevalence in patients with chronic viral hepatitis and healthy control individuals.
METHODS: Sera of 63 patients with autoimmune hepatitis were studied for the presence of GBV-C/HGV-RNA by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and for anti-E2 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. GBV-C/HGV genotypes were determined by genome se

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Studies have shown that GB virus C (GBV-C) infection leads to reduced liver disease in hepatitis C virus (HCV)/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection. Considering that the underlying mechanism(s) are unknown, we aim to identify differential gene and protein expression associated with GBV-C in HCV/HIV co-infection that may be responsible for reduced liver disease.
METHODS: Liver, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and plasma samples were collected from 43 HCV/HIV patients. Plasma was tested for GBV-C RNA by RT-PCR with NS5B gene primers. A microarray was pe

BACKGROUND: Dengue and Chikungunya are Aedes-borne diseases that are predominantly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, affecting public health globally. Dengue is caused by multiple antigenically different Dengue virus (DENV) serotypes (DENV-1 to DENV 4) in the Flaviviridae family and Chikungunya (CHIKV) in the Togaviridae family. The overlapping clinical presentation of both diseases, particularly in early infection, complicates timely and differential diagnosis. In India, diagnosis primarily relies on rapid antigen-based or ELISA-based tests, which are prone to false negatives, le

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne Flavivirus (family Flaviviridae), maintained in an enzootic cycle between birds as amplifying hosts and mosquito vectors. While WNV exposure in humans frequently remain subclinical, a febrile illness called West Nile fever occurs in about 20% and neuroinvasive disease in less than 1% of the affected individuals. For the last two decades, WNV has caused outbreaks of severe neuroinvasive disease in humans and horses in Europe, the Mediterranean Basin and emerged in the American continent. Although, previous serosurveillance reports have revealed human WN

The objective of this chapter is to provide an updated and concise systematic review on taxonomy, history, arthropod vectors, vertebrate hosts, animal disease, and geographic distribution of all arboviruses known to date to cause disease in homeotherm (endotherm) vertebrates, except those affecting exclusively man. Fifty arboviruses pathogenic for animals have been documented worldwide, belonging to seven families: Togaviridae (mosquito-borne Eastern, Western, and Venezuelan equine encephalilitis viruses; Sindbis, Middelburg, Getah, and Semliki Forest viruses), Flaviviridae (mosquito-borne yel

Injection of illicit drugs is an important risk factor for acquiring parenterally transmitted viral infections. To investigate the prevalence of viral mono- and co-infections in intravenous drug uses (IDUs) postmortem and to evaluate the risk of potential infection to personnel involved in medicolegal practice a total number of 59 known IDUs were tested during necropsy for serological markers of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as well as for the nucleic acids of the hepatitis B and C viruses, and the GB virus C (GBV-C), in blood and in th

PROBLEM/CONDITION: West Nile virus (WNV) is an arthropodborne virus (arbovirus) in the family Flaviviridae and is the leading cause of domestically acquired arboviral disease in the contiguous United States. An estimated 70%-80% of WNV infections are asymptomatic. Symptomatic persons usually develop an acute systemic febrile illness. Less than 1% of infected persons develop neuroinvasive disease, which typically presents as encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis.
REPORTING PERIOD: 2009-2018.
DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: WNV disease is a nationally notifiable condition with standard s
