Epidemiological Investigation of a Diarrhea Outbreak in the South Pacific Island Nation of Tuvalu During a Severe La Niña-Associated Drought Emergency in 2011.

The association between heavy rainfall and an increased risk of diarrhea has been well established but less is known about the effect of drought on diarrhea transmission. In 2011, the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu experienced a concurrent severe La Niña-associated drought and large diarrhea outbreak. We conducted a field investigation in Tuvalu to identify factors that contributed to epidemic transmission in the context of a drought emergency. Peak case numbers coincided with the nadir of recorded monthly rainfall, the lowest recorded since 1930. Independent factors associated with increased

Findings from a household randomized controlled trial of hand washing and face masks to reduce influenza transmission in Bangkok, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Evidence is needed on the effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to reduce influenza transmission. METHODOLOGY: We studied NPIs in households with a febrile, influenza-positive child. Households were randomized to control, hand washing (HW), or hand washing plus paper surgical face masks (HW + FM) arms. Study nurses conducted home visits within 24 hours of enrollment and on days 3, 7, and 21. Respiratory swabs and serum were collected from all household members and tested for influenza by RT-PCR or serology. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Between April 2008 and August 2009

Validation of a Novel Method for Measuring Sweat-Derived Immunoglobulin A.

INTRODUCTION: Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is a major antibody responsible for mucosal immunity, abundant in saliva, tears, airways, and the gastrointestinal tract, where it functions as the first line of defense against pathogens. In recent years, simple and non-invasive methods for monitoring IgA levels have become increasingly important for health management and disease prevention. Blood and saliva are routinely used to detect IgA levels; however, blood sampling is invasive, and saliva is strongly influenced by psychological states, limiting high-frequency or real-time monitoring. This study eval

A short, animated video to improve good COVID-19 hygiene practices: a structured summary of a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Entertainment-education (E-E) media can improve behavioral intent toward health-related practices. In the era of COVID-19, millions of people can be reached by E-E media without requiring any physical contact. We have designed a short, wordless, animated video about COVID-19 hygiene practices-such as social distancing and frequent hand washing-that can be rapidly distributed through social media channels to a global audience. The E-E video's effectiveness, however, remains unclear. The study aims to achieve the following objectives. To: 1.Quantify people's interest in watching a sh

Health Disparities: A Perspective on Internal Migration and Health Behavior in Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Natural hazards, poor socio-economic conditions, low literacy levels, and long-standing conflicts affect traditional gold miners in Sudan and contribute to multiple health vulnerabilities. An extensive survey reveals differential health risk among internal migrant miners leading to short-, medium-, and long-term health consequences and disparities. The need to identify determinants of health behavior and limited prior research on internal migrants involved in traditional gold mining in Sudan motivated this research. OBJECTIVE: To investigate potential health disparities between in

[Predictive factors of acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in a rehabilitation care unit].

UNLABELLED: Controlling the diffusion of multiresistant bacteria is a priority in the campaign against nosocomial infections. Geriatric units seem to be reservoirs of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). OBJECTIVE: The first objective of this study was to determine if some characteristics identified on admission in a rehabilitation care unit could influence the colonization by the bacterium, and to define the rate of importation and acquired-infections. The second objective was to evaluate the preventive effects of enhanced cleaning with hydro-alcoholic solution, in comparison

Identification and control of an outbreak of ciprofloxacin-susceptible EMRSA-15 on a neonatal unit.

We report the identification and control of an outbreak of a ciprofloxacin-susceptible strain of UK epidemic meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (EMRSA)-15 on a neonatal unit (NNU). All babies were screened for MRSA on admission using ciprofloxacin-containing media which did not detect the outbreak strain. The first identified case was a premature baby who developed MRSA bacteraemia with associated tibial osteomyelitis and multiple subcutaneous abscesses. The outbreak strain was subsequently identified in the nasopharyngeal secretions of a second child who was not clinically infected. S

Significant reduction of endemic MRSA acquisition and infection in cardiothoracic patients by means of an enhanced targeted infection control programme.

Due to increasing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection in cardiothoracic patients at St Thomas' Hospital, an enhanced infection control programme was introduced in September 2000. It was based on UK national guidelines on the control of MRSA and targeted additional identified risk factors for surgical site infection (SSI). It included recognition of the problem by senior staff and their taking responsibility for it; intensive support, education and advice from the infection control team; improved ward and theatre hygiene; pre-admission, admission and weekly MRSA screeni

Hospital-acquired infections as patient safety indicators.

Transmission of infection in the hospital has been identified as a patient safety problem adversely affecting patients, visitors, and health care workers. Prevention of infection should not be limited to the hospital epidemiology staff but also must involve the entire multidisciplinary team, including nurses. This chapter reviews the literature related to patient safety of nursing-authored studies of infection control in the hospital. The review indicated that there were key areas of research interest including drug resistance; hand hygiene products, procedures, and surveillance; preoperative

Resilience level and its association with maladaptive coping behaviours in the COVID-19 pandemic: a global survey of the general populations.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has induced a significant global concern on mental health. However few studies have measured the ability of individuals to "withstand setbacks, adapt positively, and bounce back from adversity" on a global scale. We aimed to examine the level of resilience, its determinants, and its association with maladaptive coping behaviours during the pandemic. METHODS: The Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) conducted a global survey involving 26 countries by online, self-administered questionnaire (October 2020-December 2021). It w

[Burkholderia cepacia Outbreak: Hospital-acquired Infection Caused by Contamination of Foam Soap].

Burkholderia cepacia is an environmental bacterium that can cause nosocomial infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients. This study aimed to describe a hospital outbreak caused by B.cepacia. In our hospital, we observed an unusual increase in B.cepacia growth in blood culture samples, prompting the infection control team to initiate a retrospective investigation due to concerns about a potential outbreak. Since February 2023, we have detected a rise in B.cepacia isolations from specimens of patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU). As a result, we retrospectively revi

BACKGROUND: In October 2023, our hospital confirmed a case of a patient with HIV with concurrent infection with Nocardia brasiliensis. A patient with HIV developed a lump on the surface of the dorsum of his left hand without any obvious cause. He used a nail clipper to trim it. Due to improper disinfection and treatment methods, the condition worsened, and he subsequently sought medical attention at our hospital. A series of clinical laboratory tests were conducted based on the patient's medical history, symptoms, and signs. Based on the test results, a reasonable clinical treatment plan was a

Prevention of community-acquired and nosocomial pneumonia.

Pneumonia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. The provision of effective prophylaxis for pneumonia has become a major goal for both public health officials and individual physicians. Prophylaxis for community-acquired pneumonia is pathogen-specific and is directed toward the most common microorganisms that cause it. The 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine; the trivalent influenza vaccine; the Haemophilus b conjugate vaccine; and either trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, dapsone, or aerosolized pentamidine are recommended to prevent Streptococcus pneumon
