Canine peripheral venous or suprarenal aortic injections of sodium or meglumine iothalamate produced a significant swing towards an alkaline urine only in individual dogs injected with meglumine salts. When mean values were compared for the sodium or meglumine groups as a whole, however, no significant differences could be established for pH change or induced diuresis. With both salts, ATPase inhibition could play a role in urinary electrolyte excretion. Carbonic anhydrase inhibition does not seem to play a significant role in urinary pH changes induced by contrast media.

The paper deals with the formulation of a potential local anaesthetic--pentacaine into appropriate drug forms. To be more specific, the pentacaine is studies from the two aspects. First, the influence of auxiliary substances and their respective concentrations on the both onset and duration of local anaesthetic effects of pentacaine solutions. Second, the liberation of pentacaine from hydrogels and suppositories. Based on the obtained results, optimal auxiliary substances together with their optimal concentration are recommended.

Attempts were made to maximize the expression of ice nuclei in Pseudomonas syringae T1 isolated from a tomato leaf. Nutritional starvation for nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, or iron but not carbon at 32 degrees C, coupled to a shift to 14 to 18 degrees C, led to the rapid induction of type 1 ice nuclei (i.e., ice nuclei active at temperatures warmer than -5 degrees C).
