Supernumerary teeth and dental management in Sotos syndrome.

Sotos syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by early and excessive growth, acromegalic features, mental retardation, advanced bone age, and a distinctive facial appearance. The oral findings commonly seen with Sotos syndrome include: premature eruption of teeth; high, arched palate; pointed chin; and, more rarely, prognathism. The purpose of this case report was to review the diagnostic characteristics of Sotos syndrome, highlighting an interesting case involving six supernumerary teeth, and emphasize the importance of a multiprofessional dental intervention in combination with active f

Radiographic examination of mesiodens and their associated complications.

OBJECTIVES: To examine mesiodens with regard to their status, their influence on adjacent teeth and their alteration during the follow-up period. METHODS: From retrospective reviews of all patients who visited our institution from 1990-2001, we identified 200 patients (256 mesiodentes) who were shown to have mesiodentes on the basis of a periapical radiograph, a panoramic radiograph or an axial radiograph. RESULTS: The number of supernumerary teeth was one in 146 cases (73%), two in 52 cases (26%) and three in 2 cases (1%). Of 256 mesiodentes, the direction of the crown of the mesiodens was

[Oral-facial-digital syndrome type I. A case report].

Oral-facial-digital syndrome type I (OFDI) is a congenital X-linked dominant disorder characterized by anomalies of the oral cavity, face and digits sometimes associated to cerebral malformations and polycystic kidney disease. The gene, responsible for this syndrome, is ofd1. Clinically it is seen only in females. Lesions of the mouth include median pseudoclefting of the upper lip, clefts of the palate and tongue, and dental anomalies (missing or supernumerary teeth, enamel hypoplasia, and teeth malpositions). Dysmorphic features affecting the head include hypertelorism, frontal bossing, micro

Tissue regeneration principles applied to separation of fused teeth.

A two-step surgical procedure for separating a central incisor fused to a supernumerary tooth with a 4-year follow-up is described. The fusion was between the crowns and 3/4 of the root length. The roots were connected by web-like radio-opaque tissue. The periodontal ligament could be followed along the lateral aspect of the roots and was continuous along the base of the web. In the first surgical phase, a full-thickness semilunar flap was raised; a fissure bar was cut along and through the web up to the approximate location of the junctional epithelium and the flap was sutured. It was assumed

An Epidemiological Study on Orodental Disorders in 3,791 Working Donkeys in Egypt: Prevalence and Risk Factors.

Orodental disorders are common in equidae and can lead to serious clinical complications. This study determines the prevalence rate (PR) of orodental disorders in working donkeys in Egypt and their potential risk factors. During 4 years, 3,791 donkeys were examined in six Egyptian governorates. Full case history and thorough clinical and oral examinations were performed. Radiography and oroendoscopy were undertaken whenever possible. All data were statistically analyzed using Poisson generalized linear models to compare PR among governorates, sex, years, body condition score, and age groups an

A sixteen year sample of surgically treated supernumerary teeth.

AIM: Supernumerary teeth represent a numerical dental anomaly in which more teeth than the norm are present in the dentition. A sixteen year sample of supernumerary teeth has been reviewed in order to analyse epidemiological data, morphological and topographic features of these teeth, especially of those located in the praemaxillary region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All cases in which supernumerary teeth were surgically treated from 1991 to 2006 at the Oral Surgery Unit of the Sapienza University of Rome have been reviewed. RESULTS: 118 Caucasian subjects with supernumerary teeth have been revi

A previously unreported association between Nance-Horan syndrome and spontaneous dental abscesses.

Atypical dentofacial structures may be the first indicator of other anomalies linked to a syndrome. This case describes the management of a 9-year-old girl referred for the routine management of supernumerary teeth. The anomalous form of her teeth, together with multiple supernumerary units and a history of congenital cataracts, were suggestive of a diagnosis of Nance-Horan syndrome. This is an X-linked disorder, in which females usually demonstrate mild expression; this case was unusual in respect to the marked phenotype expressed. Unusually, the girl developed 2 spontaneous abscesses of her

Prevalence of numeric anomalies in the permanent dentition of patients with Down syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of numeric anomalies in the permanent dentition of patients with Down syndrome by means of panoramic radiographs. The sample consisted of panoramic radiographs from 70 subjects. We examined the radiographs to detect hypodontia as well as supernumerary teeth. Our results confirm the high prevalence of hypodontia among patients with Down syndrome (60%), mostly with mild expression. The teeth most often missing were the upper lateral incisors, usually bilaterally, followed by the lower second premolars and upper second premolars. Supernumer

Oral manifestations of Ellis-van Creveld syndrome: report of two siblings with unusual dental anomalies.

Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EvC), also called chondroectodermal dysplasia, is a rare occurrence inherited as an autosomal recessive disease. Despite the fact that oral manifestations play an important role in the diagnosis criteria for EvC, few detailed reports have been published in the dental literature. This articles presents two siblings with EvC, a boy aged 9 years and a girl aged 7 1/2 years, a product of unaffected first cousin parents. The patients manifests: chondrodysplasia of tubular bones resulting in disproportionate dwarfism, polydactyly and syndactyly of hands and feet, severe d

Dental Anomalies in Different Types of Cleft Lip and Palate: Is There Any Relation?

AIM: The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of dental anomalies in Turkish patients with different types of cleft lip and palate (CLP) and investigate the relationship between the type of cleft and the dental anomaly. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients with cleft lip and/or palate (mean age: 14.1 ± 6.4 years) were enrolled in this retrospective study. Dental models, panoramic radiographs, and intraoral photographs of these patients were evaluated to detect any maxillary dental anomaly (number and size anomalies). Two hundred fifty unaffected subjects (mean age: 15.2 ± 7.2 years) c

Inherited retarded eruption in the permanent dentition.

The term retarded eruption, may be used in cases where eruption is inhibited, causing an interruption in the coordination of tooth formation and tooth eruption. The phenomenon may be local or general, and several etiological factors for retarded eruption have been listed, comprising a lack of space, ankylosis, cysts, supernumerary teeth, hormone and vitamin deficiencies and several developmental disturbances and syndromes. The present paper describes several cases of retarded eruption where no factors other than inheritance have been evident. So far 14 cases have been evaluated, 9 boys and 5 g

Prevalence and presentation of hyperdontia in a non-syndromic, mixed Nigerian population.

BACKGROUND: Although there have been studies on the prevalence and pattern of hyperdontia in sub-Saharan African subjects with similar cultural backgrounds, based on our search, none have been able to consider these epidemiological parameters in a multiethnic black population, which is expected to add substantial knowledge to what is available. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study on the panoramic radiographs of subjects who presented at two dental centres in Abuja, Nigeria between June 2013 and June 2018. Radiographic interpretations were carried out by three independent obser

Nonuniform molecular features of myelinating Schwann cells in models for CMT1: distinct disease patterns are associated with NCAM and c-Jun upregulation.

We investigated three models for Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1 (CMT1) neuropathy, comprising mice lacking connexin 32 (Cx32def), mice with reduced myelin protein zero (P0) expression (P0het) and transgenic mouse mutants overexpressing peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22tg), with regard of the expression of the developmentally regulated molecules NCAM, L1, the low-affinity NGF-receptor p75 (p75(NTR) ) and the transcription factor component c-Jun. We found that all molecules were uniformly expressed by myelin deficient and supernumerary Schwann cells. The mutant myelinating Schwann cells of PMP22tg

Supernumeraries in Nicolaides-Baraitser Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Nicolaides-Baraitser Syndrome(NCBRS) is an extremely rare condition which has been reported in only a few cases. NCBRS is a distinct clinical condition with typical clinical features of pre- and post-natal global developmental delay, impaired speech, and seizures. Microcephaly, sparse hair, anteverted alae nasi, undefined philtrum, prominence of distal phalanges and interphalangeal joints, and short metacarpals are also typical of NCBRS. CASE REPORT: There are no reported cases in the literature of patients with NCBRS presenting with multiple dental impactions, and to the authors'

A rare case of concomitant hypo-hyperdontia in identical twins.

Concomitant hypodontia and hyperdontia is a rare condition of unknown etiology. One such case of occurring in identical twins in mixed dentition is presented and discussed. A sibling, especially a twin of an affected patient, should be suspected of having a similar problem, even if he or she is asymptomatic. Genetic factors probably play an important etiological role in the co-occurence of partial anodontia and supernumerary teeth.
