Factors affecting hair cortisol concentration in privately owned intact cats.

Understanding the factors affecting long-term stress in domestic cats is essential for welfare assessment, and hair cortisol concentration has been proposed as a promising biomarker for this purpose. This study investigated hair cortisol concentrations in intact, privately owned cats (Felis silvestris catus), with emphasis on physical and behavioral factors, as well as housing conditions. Hair samples were collected from 103 cats (40 males, 63 females) during routine preparation of the surgical field under general anesthesia prior to neutering. In females, samples were collected from the abdom

A newly developed multiplex RT-PCR enables detection of blood-associated viral nucleic acids in cats.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline leukemia virus (FeLV), domestic cat hepadnavirus (DCHBV), felis catus gammaherpesvirus 1 (FcaGHV1), and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) are significant blood-associated pathogens impacting feline health. Because these viruses often co-circulate, rapid and simultaneous detection is essential for effective diagnosis and surveillance. A multiplex reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay was developed for simultaneous detection of viral and proviral nucleic acids associated with feline blood-borne viruses.

Ticks and Associated Rickettsiae from Domestic Animals in Bhutan.

In Bhutan, information on rickettsiae is limited to a few epidemiological studies. There is no information on ticks and tick-associated rickettsiae. Ticks were collected opportunistically from domestic animals residing in eight districts where a seroprevalence study had been carried out previously. Morphological identification of the ticks was performed in the United States National Tick Collection and testing for rickettsiae was carried out in the Australian Rickettsial Reference Laboratory. Samples positive for rickettsiae by qPCR were subjected to conventional PCR followed by DNA sequencing

Antibody Prevalence and Isolation of Viable Toxoplasma gondii from Raptors in the Southeastern USA.

Raptors are good indicators of the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in the environment because they prey on small mammals and birds. These prey species are a major source of infection in domestic cats ( Felis catus ), which shed the environmentally resistant oocysts. We assessed T. gondii infection in 281 opportunistically available raptors at a rehabilitation facility between 2012 and 2014. Antibodies to T. gondii were assayed by a modified agglutination test (cutoff 1:25) and found in serum of 22/71 Red-tailed Hawks ( Buteo jamaicensis ), 25/54 Barred Owls ( Strix varia ), 9/41 Red-shouldered

Expression of intrinsic factor in rat and murine gastric mucosal cell lineages is modified by inflammation.

Intrinsic factor is produced primarily by chief cells in rat and mouse, but 4 to 11% of isolated rat parietal cells also contain intrinsic factor. To test whether local conditions could alter the distribution of intrinsic factor expression, two rodent models of chronic lymphocytic gastric inflammation were examined. Immunocytochemistry was performed using antiserum against human intrinsic factor and H/K ATPase (a parietal cell marker), counting the percent of intrinsic factor-positive parietal cells. HLA-B27 transgenic rats develop chronic gastritis at age 3 months. Congenic controls expressed

Domestication shapes the gut microbial structure and metabolic function in felids: a metagenomic study of wild and domestic cats.

INTRODUCTION: The domestication process has profoundly altered the dietary patterns and living conditions of cats, with corresponding effects on their gut microbiome. METHODS: This study compared the gut microbiota composition and metabolic functions between wild felids (Otocolobus manul and Felis bieti) and domestic cats using metagenomic sequencing. RESULTS: Taxonomic analysis revealed significantly higher microbial alpha diversity and distinct community structure in wild felids compared to domestic cats. The gut microbiota of domestic cats was characterized by a higher relative abundance

Expression patterns of CXCR4, ITGB1, and FGFR3 in feline spermatogonial stem cells.

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) play a crucial role in preserving male fertility, and they are increasingly recognised as essential tools in conservation biology. However, the molecular identity of SSCs in domestic cats (Felis catus) remains insufficiently characterised. This study aimed to investigate the immunohistochemical expression patterns of three candidate markers Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 3 (FGFR3), Integrin β1 (ITGB1), and Chemokine Receptor Type 4 (CXCR4) in prepubertal and pubertal cat testes. Testicular tissues from five prepubertal and five pubertal cats were collected a

Emerging threats and zoonotic implications of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus spp. in domesticated cats: a review.

The popularity of domestic cats (Felis catus) as companion animals is undisputed. However, the human-feline proximity poses potential health risks due to zoonotic disease transmission as well as physical injuries from bites and scratches. It is alarming to note that epidemiological data supports the prevalence and colonisation of Staphylococcus spp., including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the oral cavity of cats. Considering the problem of antibiotic resistance globally, this review collates recent findings on the role of cats as reservoirs of antibiotic resistant path

Giant Hepatobiliary Cystadenoma Requiring Biliary Reconstruction in a Cat: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Hepatobiliary cystadenoma is an uncommon benign biliary tumour in domestic cats (Felis catus) that may mimic cystadenocarcinoma. Although imaging provides important diagnostic information, histopathological examination is required for confirmation. This case was notable for the exceptionally large lesion and the need for biliary reconstruction following surgical excision. CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat weighing 8 kg was presented with several weeks of vomiting, inappetence and abdominal distension. Serum biochemistry demonstrated a cholestatic

Uncovering the truth about cat-scratch disease.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is a systemic infection caused by the facultative, rod-shaped, nonmotile, Gram-negative, intracellular zoonotic bacillus Bartonella henselae. The bacteria responsible for CSD were not discovered until decades after the condition was first characterized in 1931. The prevalence of CSD is more common in warm, humid areas and is typically seasonal, peaking in the fall and winter. The pathogenesis of CSD starts when a tiny wound from an infected cat's bite or scratch allows the bacteria B. henselae to enter the human body. The innate immune system, which includes neutrophi

From rare to recognized: enhanced detection uncovers Cryptosporidium endemicity and species diversity in Denmark.

ABSTRACTHuman cryptosporidiosis, a diarrheal disease caused by Cryptosporidium species, has previously been considered rare in Denmark and primarily associated with travel abroad. Cryptosporidium in humans came under national surveillance in 2023. Here, we assess all cases identified in Denmark from 2010 to 2024, presenting the identified species, the trends in time and place, and relate the findings to recent changes in diagnostic methods. After 2021, the number of new cases increased substantially, coinciding with the adoption of gastrointestinal syndromic testing in several local hospitals.

Helminths of free-ranging dogs and cats in an urban natural reserve in Mexico City and their potential risk as zoonotic agents.

In the Reserva Ecológica del Pedregal of San Ángel, located in the south of Mexico City, Mexico, free-roaming dogs and cats coexist with 148 bird, 33 of mammal, 23 of reptile and seven amphibian species, that represent a remnant of the original fauna of the Mexican Plateau. The negative impact that dogs and cats have on local fauna is unobjectionable, however, the role that these introduced vertebrates play as potential transmitters of infectious diseases for native fauna and humans, is much less understood. Information about parasitic infections in native and introduced animals in this locati
