Longitudinal Improvement in Respiratory Function Following Plasma Exchange in Patients with Severe Myasthenia Gravis.

BACKGROUND: There are no data on the effect size and timing of plasma exchange (PLEX) in patients with myasthenic crisis (MC). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed measurements of forced vital capacity (FVC) and negative inspiratory force (NIF) in the days before and after PLEX (administered every other day) in patients with MC admitted to a tertiary hospital over 4 years. For multiple measurements in one day, the average value was used. The day immediately before the first treatment with PLEX was considered baseline. Using time as a continuous or categorical variable in mixed-effects multipl

Sleep Quality in Greek Adolescent Swimmers.

The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and functional indices, swimming distance and gender in adolescent competitive swimmers. Forty-eight adolescent swimmers (boys, n = 22, 15.7 ± 1.0 years and girls, n = 26, 15.1 ± 0.8 years) were included in our study. They were assessed for handgrip strength, respiratory muscle strength and pulmonary function, answered a Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index questionnaire (PSQI), and recorded their anthropometric and morphological characteristics and training load for the last four weeks. The results showed differences betw

Development of a Radiation-induced Pulmonary Fibrosis Partial Body Irradiation Model in C57BL/6 Mice.

With the current volatile geopolitical climate, the threat of nuclear assault is high. Exposure to ionizing radiation from either nuclear incidents or radiological accidents often lead to major harmful consequences to human health. Depending on the absorbed dose, the symptoms of the acute radiation syndrome and delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE) can appear within hours, weeks to months. The lung is a relatively radiosensitive organ with manifestation of radiation pneumonitis as an acute effect, followed by apparent fibrosis in weeks or even months. A recently developed, first-

Respiratory phenotypes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as determined by respiratory questions on the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised and their relation to respiratory tests.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Respiratory insufficiency and its complications are the main cause of death in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Respiratory symptoms are scored in questions Q10 (dyspnoea) and Q11 (orthopnoea) of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R). The association of respiratory test alterations with respiratory symptoms is unclear. METHODS: Patients with ALS and progressive muscular atrophy were included. We retrospectively recorded demographic data, ALSFRS-R, forced vital capacity (FVC), maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) pres

Intralingual Administration of AAVrh10-miRSOD1 Improves Respiratory But Not Swallowing Function in a Superoxide Dismutase-1 Mouse Model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease characterized by degeneration of motor neurons and muscles, and death is usually a result of impaired respiratory function due to loss of motor neurons that control upper airway muscles and/or the diaphragm. Currently, no cure for ALS exists and treatments to date do not significantly improve respiratory or swallowing function. One cause of ALS is a mutation in the superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) gene; thus, reducing expression of the mutated gene may slow the progression of the disease. Our group has been studying the SOD1G93A transgenic mo

Heart Failure Results in Inspiratory Muscle Dysfunction Irrespective of Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction.

BACKGROUND: Exercise intolerance in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) or heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) results from both cardiac dysfunction and skeletal muscle weakness. Respiratory muscle dysfunction with restrictive ventilation disorder may be present irrespective of left ventricular ejection fraction and might be mediated by circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines. OBJECTIVE: To determine lung and respiratory muscle function in patients with HFrEF/HFpEF and to determine its associations with exercise intolerance and markers of systemic inflammati

Biomechanical CT metrics are associated with patient outcomes in COPD.

BACKGROUND: Traditional metrics of lung disease such as those derived from spirometry and static single-volume CT images are used to explain respiratory morbidity in patients with COPD, but are insufficient. We hypothesised that the mean Jacobian determinant, a measure of local lung expansion and contraction with respiration, would contribute independently to clinically relevant functional outcomes. METHODS: We applied image registration techniques to paired inspiratory-expiratory CT scans and derived the Jacobian determinant of the deformation field between the two lung volumes to map local
