Multifocal intraosseous hemangioma: A case report.

RationaleMultifocal intraosseous hemangioma, which affects multiple body parts, is rare. The selection of appropriate lesion sites for biopsy and effective treatment in multifocal intraosseous hemangioma is challenging. Here, we report a case of multifocal intraosseous hemangioma.Patient concernsA 49-year-old woman was admitted to our department with a chief complaint of aggravated lumber pain for 10 days.DiagnosesRadiographic imaging revealed lesions involving the bilateral ribs, lumbar vertebrae, ilium, pubis, and proximal femur. Open biopsy in the ilium established the pathological diagnosi

Cancer Pain Is Not One-Size-Fits-All: Evolving from Tradition to Precision.

Cancer pain remains a significant challenge in oncology, profoundly affecting patients' quality of life, function, and prognosis. Historically under-recognized and managed with a uniform, opioid-centric approach, cancer pain was often inadequately treated. Advances in pain assessment, multimodal analgesia, and supportive care have improved outcomes, yet traditional algorithms frequently fail to address the complex, heterogeneous nature of cancer pain. Contemporary management is shifting toward precision and personalized medicine, integrating genetic, molecular, and biomarker data with individu

Efficacy of percutaneous vertebroplasty for the relief of osteoblastic spinal metastasis pain.

The aim of the present manuscript was to retrospectively evaluate the efficacy of fluoroscopy-guided percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) for the relief of osteoblastic spinal metastases pain. PVP was performed in 39 consecutive patients with 82 osteoblastic metastatic spinal vertebras. 19 vertebras had pathologic compressive fracture and the other 63 vertebras had no compressive fracture with obvious imaging abnormalities. The ages of the patients ranged from 40 to 77 years with a mean age of 58.5±9.0 years. Visual analog scale (VAS) and QLQ-BM22 score were used to evaluate pain and quality of l

Progress and research trends in neurogenic bladder after spinal cord injury bibliometric analysis based on web of science database: An observational study.

Neurogenic bladder (NB) is a significant complication that often occurs after spinal cord injury. It results from urinary dysfunction caused by the injury, disrupting the normal neural control of the bladder and urethra. Symptoms of NB can include urinary frequency, urgency, incontinence, and retention, all of which can greatly impact the quality of life of affected individuals. While there are articles and reviews on NB, fewer specifically address NB following spinal cord injury. This study examined 1095 publications from January 1, 2000, to March 27, 2024, in the Web of Science core database

The unusual first sign of presentation of hepatocellular carcinoma: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver malignancy, characterized by aggressive biological behavior and a high propensity for extrahepatic spread. The most common sites of metastasis are the lungs, regional lymph nodes, bones, adrenal glands, and peritoneum. In contrast, the paranasal sinuses are an unusual site for metastatic HCC, and involvement of the sphenoid sinus represents an even rarer event. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 67-year-old male patient who presented with transient diplopia, left eyelid ptosis, and refractory epistaxis as the i

Recent topics in diagnosis and treatment of malignant spinal tumors.

The diagnosis and treatment of malignant spinal tumors are complex and require an integrated approach known as Jaffe's triangle. This review discusses recent topics in the diagnosis and treatment of primary and metastatic malignant spinal tumors. Integrated diagnostic methods, including the development of a dumbbell scoring system for benign-malignant differentiation and the use of positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (PET-MRI), have improved diagnostic accuracy. Curative resection techniques such as vertebrectomy, sagittal resection, and posterior resection are crucial

Intensive Care Unit-Acquired Weakness: Not just Another Muscle Atrophying Condition.

Intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICUAW) occurs in critically ill patients stemming from the critical illness itself, and results in sustained disability long after the ICU stay. Weakness can be attributed to muscle wasting, impaired contractility, neuropathy, and major pathways associated with muscle protein degradation such as the ubiquitin proteasome system and dysregulated autophagy. Furthermore, it is characterized by the preferential loss of myosin, a distinct feature of the condition. While many risk factors for ICUAW have been identified, effective interventions to offset these ch

Review of the Current Knowledge on the Role of Stem Cell Transplantation in Neurorehabilitation.

The management involving stem cell (SC) therapy along with physiotherapy offers tremendous chance for patients after spinal cord injury (SCI), traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, etc. However, there are still only a limited number of reports assessing the impact of stem cells (SCs) on the rehabilitation process and/or the results of the simultaneous use of SC and rehabilitation. Additionally, since there is still not enough convincing evidence about the effect of SCT on humans, e.g., in stroke, there have been no studies conducted concerning rehabilitation program formation and expected outc

Early Diagnosis of Herpes Zoster Neuralgia: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Early intervention reduces the incidence of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Typical shingles are easy to diagnose; however, there is no clear diagnostic method for neuralgia symptoms manifested before the onset of the rash, which can easily cause misdiagnosis. This not only increases the patient's pain, medical expenses, and mental burden, but more importantly, delays the valuable time for early treatment of shingles, and increases the probability of complications and PHN. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, the diagnostic methods of preherpetic neuralgia were summarized and analyzed, and the

Herpes Zoster and Cardiovascular Disease: Exploring Associations and Preventive Measures through Vaccination.

Herpes zoster, induced by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), is a unilaterally distributed vesicular rash that can cause multiple complications. VZV not only causes neurological problems, including postherpetic neuralgia and ocular zoster, but also causes inflammatory vasculopathy and increases the incidence of hemorrhagic or ischemic complications. Therefore, understanding the association between the development of herpes zoster and the subsequent occurrence of acute stroke or cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction and heart failure, is of great interest.

Exploring the applicability, combined strategies, and challenges of ablation in hematology based on its characteristics and immunomodulatory mechanisms.

Malignant hematological diseases, such as lymphoma, leukemia, and multiple myeloma, are frequently accompanied by clinical challenges including local progressive lesions, relapsed/refractory conditions, and poor tolerance to standard treatments in special populations. Systemic therapies represented by chemotherapy and targeted therapy have inherent limitations in addressing local tumor burden, relieving organ compression, and being suitable for frail patients. As a minimally invasive local treatment technology, ablation has been widely used in solid tumor therapy due to its advantages of preci

Common Neurologic Diseases in Geriatric Dogs.

The increase in the canine geriatric population means that veterinarians are more often confronted with diseases that are more prevalent in patients in this age group. As in other organ systems, degenerative, neoplastic, and vascular diseases are the most prevalent neurologic disorders in older dogs. A neurological disease in an older dog poses a challenge for the clinician due to the presence of concomitant diseases and age-related changes that make it difficult to interpret the neurological examination. In addition, given the age of the patients, some owners do not allow advanced imaging tes

Novel Treatments in Myasthenia Gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is the prototypical autoimmune disorder caused by specific autoantibodies at the neuromuscular junction. Broad-based immunotherapies, such as corticosteroids, azathioprine, mycophenolate, tacrolimus, and cyclosporine, have been effective in controlling symptoms of myasthenia. While being effective in a majority of MG patients many of these immunosuppressive agents are associated with long-term side effects, often intolerable for patients, and take several months to be effective. With advances in translational research and drug development capabilities, more directed ther

New Targeted Agents in Myasthenia Gravis and Future Therapeutic Strategies.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disease for which multiple immunomodulatory therapies are available. Nevertheless, MG has a significant impact on patient quality of life. In recent years, experts' main efforts have focused on optimizing treatment strategies, since disease burden is considerably affected by their safety and tolerability profiles, especially in patients with refractory phenotypes. This article aims to offer neurologists caring for MG patients an overview of the most innovative targeted drugs specifically designed for this disease and summarizes the recent literatu

Coexistence of Autoantibodies against the Golgi Complex and Ro52 Antigen in a Patient with Nonspecific Interstitial Pneumonia.

Nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) is often associated with connective tissue diseases (CTD). The diagnosis of NSIP was confirmed in a 63-year-old man by high-resolution computed tomography and an open lung biopsy. Anti-Golgi complex autoantibodies (AGA) and anti-Ro52 antibodies were simultaneously detected at high concentrations. Autoantibodies to aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARS) were negative. The patient was treated with corticosteroids for six months. During the seven-year follow-up, NSIP had a slow progression and patient had not developed the clinical features of CTD. The present
